Plugin “management” in Firefox is a joke. Total engineers solution, no elegant at all. Chrome does a much better job.

[1] The ones you use are never ready when there's an update.
[2] They always need updating, a time consuming process involving multiple clicks.
[3] The damn thing has to restart afterwards.

I probably notice this more because I only launch Firefox once every week or two, but when I do I can guarantee one of the first things I'll be doing is restarting.

True, one would hope at least some of the information from the plugin engine created for Flash would be reusable for the extensions. Would help mitigate issues, although I am not quite imagining a great interface for the actual suser management of plugins.

Apple has in the past used WWDC has a stage for Safari-related announcements.

has should be as :D

Long overdue IMO.

I feel like I'm drifting over to Chrome, much quicker and the extensions are nice. Not that Safari doesn't have work arounds but official support would be really nice!

WWDC - forgot the f-ing browser. What about "The Cloud"?

Apple's brand is built upon its reputation for tangible goods.
Unfortunately tangible hardware is like this summers fashion, quickly forgotten.

Unless Apple make a major declaration of commitment to The Cloud space applications, services and content at this WWDC then I'd have to call their long term survival and growth into question.

Gruber really rubs me wrong, for some reason. I am not a fan of his writing and I find him annoying. He does have some good sources though - and that also bothers me!

Hmm, Jobs did say that we wouldn't be disappointed come WWDC, so this would definitely be a nice announcement. And if they integrate ClicktoFlash, I can get rid of all my Safari hacks and have nice official API solutions.

But, I think an even more killer announcement would be extensions for Safari on iPhone OS. That I think would kill off a lot of complaints about not allowing a browser like Firefox in the app store since you can just get extensions to enhance Safari to your liking, as well as it being a good shot against Android.

Gruber is wishful thinking. Safari is not a browser that currently has the audience that's using extensions, that market belongs for 99% to Firefox. On the other hand Safari 4.1 seems to be imminent. Enhancements we can expect: Better HTML5 and HTML5-video support and improved support for CSS3 features. Speed improvements to all components are on the horizon as well.

One feature that might make it to Safari 4.1 is the ability to save webpages as applications. This ability appeared in the Safari 4 betas released to developers but was pulled starting with the public beta. One thing that might be added is the ability to save websites for iPod/iPhone/iPad. This would allow quick secure access to certain web applications, just from your Mac or iDevice.

Apples problem

This is where I think Apple has a problem and needs to change a little. It seems they only ever update there software once a year to get big news coverage which is fine but.....

I think to compete now with Google better they need to start updating quicker than once a year. Just a thought

I only want one extension

The only thing I want, and that should have been integrated into the options in the first place, is "Disable GIF animation".

Naturally they will all have to be pre-approved by Apple and only available for install via some app store I am sure.

Without the feature being implemented, without seeing how extensions might be implemented, without seeing an app store for the extensions you have already determined not only that Apple will want to have a say in *their* marketplace, but you've also not identified what functionality that their "walled garden" might omit.

Moving forward in a constructive way, what functionality do you want? Let's start a list of those extensions that would be most useful to us.

I'm struggling beyond what I have currently, which is Click To Flash and most recently, Glims. What functionality (in extensions) would improve the browsing experience in your opinion??

Unfortunately for Apple...

...Chrome is just simply a better browser right now.

I use both, but Chrome is faster, and unlike Sarafi it has never crashed on me. I have at least one Safari crash per week (Mozilla on Windows never crashed on me either, at least in more recent times).

What does Chrome have? A faster experience; a combined URL/Search bar which is awesome; better CSS inspection; better bookmark management; cross-platform.

How it is that Google, a third party developer, for Mac can do a better job than Apple on such a core part of the modern computer experience. I could understand them doing better on the PC, but on my Mac???

Nor has Safari crashed on me. I've no idea but are we both talking about Safari on OSX?

What does Chrome have?

Chrome has one purpose, to invade your privacy, communicate everything it can grab about your online behaviours to Google, which monetizes it and sells it to their advertisers. This is the purpose of Chrome. If you think that a speed increase of x milliseconds for the price of your privacy is good value, go for it, have fun, be psychologically manipulated by all of Google's advertisers, and buy more stuff which they tell you to buy.

How it is that Google, a third party developer, for Mac can do a better job than Apple on such a core part of the modern computer experience. I could understand them doing better on the PC, but on my Mac???

Perhaps you should step away from Google's release cycles for just a moment. This isn't a race. Apple's platform is beyond adequate, and in my opinion has a better user experience than any other offering out there. Just because Google released a big advertising platform, with in your opinion are a few better features, faster than Apple's release cycle doesn't mean that Chrome is better. Patience man!

All I want is the ability to search Wikipedia from the search bar on the top right. On Internet Explorer and Firefox you have this button where you could click on and choose what website you wanted to search, such as YouTube, Facebook or Wikipedia. I don't much care for extensions, I bet they're just going to make the browser slower. I hated Firefox because each time you launch it, it first wants to install freaking updates to extensions I didn't even intend to use right away. And you can't freaking browse while it installs! Anyway, extensions suck on Firefox, they don't follow any kind of logical GUI schemes or anything, they're buggy and freaking slow, I hope Safari won't follow that!

Glims for Safari. I don't install many 3rd party extensions, but this is one I can't live without.

Bring on third party extensions! That can only be a good thing.
:)

Erm… What !?

There already are extensions / plugins in Safari. Unless someone failed to mention it was about the iPhone OS… that would be news.

Chrome on Windows = Amazing!
Firefox on Windows = Great!
Safari on Windows = Pooh.
Internet Explorer on Windows = Okay.

Chrome on Mac = Amazing!
Firefox on Mac = Great!
Safari on Mac = Great!
Internet Explorer on Mac = lol

Chrome on Linux = Amazing!
Firefox on Linux = Great!
Safari on Linux = who?
Internet Explorer on Linux = rofl

I'm not saying things can't change but....

The only thing i want is to be able to change search engines in the search bar like in FF.

Wouldn't it be funny if Apple made developers go through an Extension Approval Process?

Would have thought with C-Block and other low level tools added in SL the aim would be to build sandboxed extensions that would run on both safari and mobile safari with tight resource limits set for the extensions.

Limits on mobile safari would be to tight to allow flash of cause.

That way no need for apple to approve, if it runs a mock it just gets killed.

I must say this would really surprise me. Apple doesn't strike me as a company that would provide tools that allow developers to change the way Apple's software interact with the user. After all, Steve Jobs knows best.

There would have to be some kind of compelling business case for Apple to relinquish control. I'm not seeing it.
