Apple always behind? I see the opposite. And those areas of functionality that would potentially harm the user experience are thought through and time taken, to learn from others mistakes, before implementing.

I for one am glad that there is a strict approval process. I don't want any crap to be accepted, when I hit download/purchase/install I want to feel safe in the knowledge that standards, security and stability are not compromised.

and yet it's not uncommon for patches to apps to appear within days of a big release to fix "stability issues"

I think it is a little late to the game for Safari. I do find it funny when apple copies some one else people defend apple saying when they come in they do it better. If some one else does it, it is complete coping.

Safari is still some small time browser that even Mac users in large numbers do not use. It was released for windows and is just a world of hurt.

Of my Mac friends only one of them even uses Safari. Most of them usine Firefox and one uses Chrome.
I personally use Firefox and play around with Chrome. My mom uses Firefox and my dad uses Chrome.

As for extensions people tend to forget about them and not noticed them until they do not have them. I installed firefox on my parents computer years ago when I was home and then added in some of the extensions I liked like adblock and Google Preview which have noticeable effects. My mom started using Firefox later on and though it was great with those things but did not know about extensions. She installs firefox on her work computer and those things are missing. She ask me about them and I tell her what to do. Shortly afterward she installs those at work.

Plugin “management” in Firefox is a joke. Total engineers solution, no elegant at all. Chrome does a much better job.

[1] The ones you use are never ready when there's an update.
[2] They always need updating, a time consuming process involving multiple clicks.
[3] The damn thing has to restart afterwards.

I probably notice this more because I only launch Firefox once every week or two, but when I do I can guarantee one of the first things I'll be doing is restarting.

You have no idea how far Firefox Extension Management has come. Firefox was one the first if not the first browser to really use extension and it is what sold a lot of people early on. It is what converted me and several of my friends back in Beta 0.9 (or was it 0.8). Back the extension were ordered in how you downloaded them. Now they are ordered alphabetically. The Mozilla group has done some things to help solve the problems when there is an update and it killing extensions. It used to be Devs would have to to do work arounds to solve the problem and Mozilla even put out some of the suggested work arounds.

As for the updates it seems you have a lot of extension more than likely loaded up mixed with the fact that you will go weeks with out using it, you will have an update.

 Um, who cares? [what is this, a high-school popularity contest?]

To be honest...
  • I don't care if you use Safari or not.

  • I doubt Apple cares if you use Safari or not.

  • Mozilla might care, because browser design is probably their heart & soul.

  • Google might care, because they want to sprinkle cookie dust on your tail and track your behavior, but...

  • If anyone here cares what anyone *else* is browsing with... then, idunno (maybe a hobby would help).

>> "a little late to the game" << What game?
>> "some small time browser" << Oh noooos. :D

Safari is a free software item included with Apple hardware.
For them, the "game" was won the instant you bought a Mac.

Yah, and i'm sure Apple is looking forward to all the tech support calls:
  • "Hey Apple dudes, my Safari is sure actin' weird."
  • Please sir, relaunch Safari with extensions disabled.

Those plugins break every time Safari updates. That's the current problem with Safari. With an official extension APIs support, Safari shouldn't be breaking the plugins every time it gets updated.

To be fair, ff breaks plugins with their major releases too. Of course I support a full api, but it's not as if safari completely lacks usable and practical plugins at the moment, that's what I was saying, and most people were misinformed enough to think it did.
