I don't think it's real, but it kind of reminds me of this mockup, with the edge to edge glass, though with less rounded corners.

This mockup looks way better than the pictures in question.

Apple doesn't follow the design concepts of the competition. Why would they start making phones that looked like an htc? Everyone knows what an iphone looks like, all the rest of the phones look generic.

Remember all the photoshop pros when that leaked mac mini came out? I wouldn't trust anything they say.

Wouldn't put it past Apple to release something like this 'accidentally'. Make it hideous, 'drop' it somewhere, see what the fans like/dislike and go from there.

It's a lot cheaper than focus groups :)

a smaller sim would give the phone more space to more things in. also they could have used micro sims cause

A. apple likes to make new standards

Well, Apple does that when it makes sense and is of importance to them. I don't think Apple has any stake into making micro SIM a standard.

The difference ins size is only marginal, and the necessary controllers are basically the same. Optimizing the battery and scaling that down would generate more space. For example, if they use this improved iPad battery in the iPhone, they could essentially scale the battery down 2,5 x and keep the same battery performance. (I personally would prefer improved battery performance though)

c. unlocking. they just officially unlock it then put in a microsim to make it almost impossible to get another carriers sim in.

It would be buying time, but nevertheless a good possibility until other carriers start offering micro-sim as an option.

The last 2 mockups posted are amazing. I seriously can not wait to upgrade! I keep saying this over and over, but I will definitely be first in line (unless it looks like this supposed leak) lol

Apple Store is down most likely due to the iPad 3G? Just taking a guess.

I have to say this must be a fake. If I was the guy that found this thing I would have taken more pictures in better quality lighting.

Im thinking that this must be a well placed teaser, or something else to get a reaction??? It seems like something like this happen last year around this time frame. It gets everyone hyped up and talking about it. If you think about it, its good marketing for Apple with everyone else talking about whats coming next.

Sad to say, but it looks ugly enough to be an Apple product. They just keep getting plainer and plainer with their designs.

Has anyone noticed that the apple logo on the back of the supposed new iPhone looks like its under the first layer of whatever material the back is made from and that the :apple: has a clear look too it? Like it might be able to light up? Say, for a flash for the camera...You can see it best from the picture on Engadget of the back of the device.

Apple planted this phone un purpose, it doesnt boot up? ofcourse not. They just planted this phone so people get confused, then in a few days they show off a different design :)

If true, it would be awesome.

Wait... doesn't Apple have a patent on using the back as a mutiltouch surface? Maybe that's what's up with the glass on the back

@ShiftyPig,

Out of all of the comments I've read thus far in this thread, yours seems to be the only one that makes any sense.

Everyone's complaining about the seams for the volume rockers, yet no one realizes that those same buttons look mighty familiar if you were to take a look at the battery indicator button on a unibody Macbook.

In MHO the design screams out industrial and clean, much like the direction of the past 2 iMac refreshes. As well as the Unibody Macbook before it.

As stated on Engadget, if it were a knockoff (which I truly believe it isn't) the creators wouldn't go as far as using an Apple dock connector. It's just too troublesome.

Hmm, having looked at the photos over the past few hours, the thing's starting to grow on me. I'd love to see the chrome back, though. It just looks shinier. :)

Store is down. What could they be doing? iPad 3G? Doesn't seem likely, since it's not available till 'late' April, and it's only the 18th. Anyone know?

The Chinese have made counterfeits that have a dock connector that supports charging off legit cables. I don't remember if their USB interface worked, though.

I don't know, it doesn't have the "Apple" look to me. Apple always makes things look and be as simple as possible: the back of the 1st gen iPhone was made of two different materials, and the 3G iPhone was made with a single kind of material. What strikes me here is that on these photos, the sides of the device have silver, rounded buttons, and the side has various seams in it. The rounded buttons look cheap and not as cool as the long, metallic buttons currently used. I don't think Apple would change those.

It could easily be a chinese knock-off, even if most of those use USB, why wouldn't they use the Dock connector? They could easily do that, they're the leaders in faking stuff. I've seen some very strange chinese knock-offs, and anything is possible.

remember when the first iPod was announced? it was totally joked about, hated, and then it changed the industry... and every fanboy wanted it.

here we are today, with a possible 4th Gen iPhone, and almost everyone is joking about it, hating the design, and if it gets official, every fanboy (including 90% of the haters) will want it.

it's the circle of life. ;)

PS. interesting note, Apple Store is down in many countries!! I just love that yellow sticky note!! maybe Apple couldn't handle their new iPhone being announced on the hands of Engadget, so they're throwing an info page of the iPhone HD!! :D :p

Vote me as a big NOPE!

If this is Steve-Os idea of an A+ update then all i can say is "Steve what are you nuts?" and if Ive were dead he'd be spinning in his grave!

This looks really legit, who would put that much time, money, and effort into a fake? This won't be shipping product, this is a prototype, but I would bet money that this is a real iPhone 4g.
