It's either fake or a QC reject. The lightning connector is angled poorly into the casing, looks like a typical misalignment from a cheap factory. $1 lightning cables have a similar issue.

Also, why is it a cable? Why not an adaptor like the one that ships with the Apple Pencil?

So when and if this happens, I'll no longer be able to charge my phone at my desk while also listening to a podcast with headphones? Or sometimes watch a video during a break, so a vertical stand that has an audio passthrough would not be a solution either.
Apple wants you to use wireless headphones.

Yay! yet another cable thingy to purchase and keep track of.

Or not.

I'm pretty convinced to switch to Android for my next phone, and I never thought I'd say that.
I friend of mine switched to Android but will be switching back late next year when an all new iPhone is launched.

I did already. The only annoying thing is messaging. Apple has a way to deregister your number from imessage, but it doesn't totally work. Sort of ridiculous that Apple couldnt create a better solution.

I feel like I am one of the only people that couldn't care less if Apple gets rid of the headphone jack.

Nope me too.. not plugged in a wired headphone in about 3 years. Bluetooth all the way. The funny thing is you get people banging on about high quality headphones etc yet they are using a 100 year old 'technically huge' connector and the fact that 99 percent of the time are playing compressed mp3s. Stoopid.

What are they? Bats?

I remember a blind test on the gadget show a whiel back and even musicians couldn't tell the difference between wire and wireless given decent cans. The only difference they coudl tell was Uncompressed audio over mp3!

Is this supposed to be conjecture or an actual leak? The part shown has a clearly off-center Lightning connector; it looks hollow, in fact.

I already took this into my own hands and bought a DAC/headphone amp that is compatible with the iPhone. So I just plug my lightning to USB cord into the DAC and the other into my phone and good to go. Wanted to avoid the headphone jack already, the sound is so much better. So count me in the do not care group.

Simple enough I guess, but I would have thought that it would have been just one piece instead of two pieces separated by wire.

While this adapter is definitely fake, I think a two-piece solution is better than a single-piece one. Headphone cables need to be flexible as close to the insertion point as possible. A single-piece adapter would be at least an inch longer than a two-piece one before the bend point. Otherwise there's too much stress on the lightning plug.

Enhance!

I've heard that from other friends who have actually made the switch, and you'll be back. Android is awful.

So, no chance of having it plugged in to speakers on your desktop and keeping it charged up so when you need to take it with you its not dead.

Good thing no one ever does that.

Fake. The lightning part isn't centered. Not even close.

And why in the world is immediately in quotes in the text:

"...the dongle appears to work "immediately" without any issues."

So, no chance of having it plugged in to speakers on your desktop and keeping it charged up so when you need to leave and take it with you its not nearly dead.

Good thing no one ever does that.

Unless by some miracle they add wireless charging. Which I do not expect to happen sadly either.

Mind is a powerful thing. People can convince themselves that one thing is better than the other. I remember reading about a blind over ear headphone test. Most complained that they don't like beats but funny enough when presented in a blind test and were asked to pick the ones that sounded best they chose beats.
