I don't think that a change that led to a thinner, lighter phone with a bigger battery is "form over function" for something that had to remain in a pocket a lot and use all day.

Its a matter of Apple telling the consumer what they need. I'd wager if you did a quick search you'd find the vast majority would take a thicker phone and bigger battery/better ergonomics.

This kind of thing is exactly why I'm leaving Apple.

So when and if this happens, I'll no longer be able to charge my phone at my desk while also listening to a podcast with headphones? Or sometimes watch a video during a break, so a vertical stand that has an audio passthrough would not be a solution either.
How long are your breaks? Take the phone out of the dock to watch your video.

The solution would be bluetooth headphones. Or a dongle that splits the port into both headphone and lightning. Id suggest investing in some good BT headphones though.

Is a bigger battery what you want, or are you looking for a longer-lasting one? Some phones have bigger batteries, but don't necessarily last any longer than an iPhone.

Considering how tough and resilient the lightning charging cables are... I can't wait to see how strong and durable the adapters are!!!

I did already. The only annoying thing is messaging. Apple has a way to deregister your number from imessage, but it doesn't totally work. Sort of ridiculous that Apple couldnt create a better solution.
Problem is on the Android side we are already seeing phones from Moto Z, Moto Z Force, LeEco, etc with no head jack - so we may be looking at 2-3 years for a full transition.

The author also notes that if headphones are plugged into both the standard headphone jack on a current iPhone and the adapter connected to Lightning, the device gives priority to the Lightning port for audio output.

Well this gives me some hope. It would be awesome if Apple left the 3.5 jack but then allowed a device like this. Because previous testing have shown that lightning connected ear devices sound better than 3.5 connected devices. So this gives people choices and maybe is a way to transition from the 3.5 to the lightning standard.

What I wish apple would do is settle on a single standard. For that I would say why not go with USBC which is non proprietary. replace the lightning on the phones and tablets with USBC and then things start to make more sense (at least in my head).

Funny how everyone and their dog claims they're leaving Apple and yet Apple still posts ridiculous sales for iPhones.

We'll see I guess. I've tried some BT earbuds for running, but they worked too well. I couldn't hear anything but the music and I like to hear cars that are driving around me. They are also huge compared to earbuds. My winter hat felt like it was trying to jam them into my head.

But Samsung is selling more phones than Apple this year...

Seems fake because Lightning metal part loose in hollow white tube.

Agreed. There is no way this is an Apple product.

In fact, I'd argue that it looks like somebody pieced it together out of parts of other cables.

I'm not dismissing the likelihood that Apple will abandon the built-in 3.5mm jack, I think it's very likely (though I'd argue that they'd probably be smarter to move to USB-C for the port over Lightning, just to get the EU off their back about universal charging ports).

These images; however, don't represent anything Apple.

I really hope that's fake, because it looks exactly like I feared it would, and is a horrible 'solution', for numerous reasons.

It's far more sensible to have a headphone socket towards one end of the device rather than the centre. The lightning adapter jutting out like that is awkward and inelegant. It looks designed precisely to drive people towards native lightning or bluetooth earphones/headphones whilst being able to say 'here you go, problem solved so shut up!'.

In Apple's mind no one would seriously consider deregistration. You see, Apple thinks product quality does not matter, after all it is Apple and way too many people buy Apple because it is Apple. Nokia suffered the same disease. They made the best radios in any phone bar none, and they thought the rest did not matter, until it did.

So, will the DAC in this adapter be at least as good as the one in the phone, and will you still be able to control the volume from the controls on the phone when using this with third party headphones w/o remote?

Yes it will.

Video is incredibly obnoxious. Also, am I the only one who really does not want wireless headphones? A major use for me every single day, is simultaneously charging the phone and having headphones plugged in at the same time. I do not want to connect via bluetooth or adapter fairly objectively. Not as in, it will grow on me, or anything like that, I actually do not want wireless audio and to toggle with the software to do that. Headphones - plug in, audio on. So much simpler than connecting to a bluetooth speaker. and - let's be honest, the inevitable bit of trouble that can bring sometimes. Convinced that they are lost up there in Cupertino. Well, the good news is, I will be hanging onto my money this time around. Similar to the latest Macbook, not convinced, and not going to be convinced over time either.

Uh oh... might have to eat those words. See http://appleinsider.com/articles/16...ne-adapter-for-iphone-7-spotted-in-new-photos

Additional photo here shows a reason why the Lightning connector would be loose... the connector is disassembled to be able to show the internals.

Would like to think this is still not an Apple product, regardless; as it represents nothing redeeming in its design.
