A few years ago, when the 4/4S were still sold, there were videos and articles about Apple and "planned obsolescence" making the rounds over social networks like Facebook. A few people I know referred to these and mentioned the glass back as an example of planned obsolescence, like Apple put it intentionally to make the phone easier to break. (Replacing the back was only $29 though).

As much as I loved the 4/4S design, it is true that it makes the phone more fragile. But apparently in 2017 it's not a concern to people anymore (I guess because Samsung switched to glass backs it's ok now?)

Or because there have been three generations of advanced glass since then.

iPhone SE 2 = instabuy! I love my SE far more than the 6 I had for 2 years. Will buy an update without question if it's the same physical dimensions.
I'm actually really hoping for a 6/7 sized screen but in a no frills SE configuration. I don't need 3D Touch or the latest advance in mobile phone cameras. Just a fast, reliable iPhone with a decent sized screen.

I love love love my 5s. But when the time comes to upgrade I think I'd like a slightly bigger display is all.

Some of the cut-outs for a possible flash lens appear to be just that without anything inside the circular shape. If the images are as they appear that would lend some credibility to the possibility of these being concepts for a part, namely the back cover of the phones.

If there is any substance to these images, it is encouraging to see concepts for flush-fitting cameras. That said, Jony Ive's design skills would be really important here as the flush-fitting circular lenses vertically aligned in these images look very ugly in my opinion. At least with the horizontally aligned cameras in the 7 plus, attention is distracted from the two differently sized lenses making them appear much more uniformed and pleasing to sight framed in their rectangular surround. Ideally, of course, I would like to see a solution similar to concepts we have seen for the next front-facing cameras, but that would not allow for an entirely solid back to the phones.

And it may work out well for you. Everyone's a bit different. I found that I didn't like the slightly bigger display when it came to holding the phone and using it. The display part was great, though. My wife still uses an iPhone 6 so whenever I hold it, it just feels so big and unwieldy.

For me, long live 4" form factor! :)

what if this is the new 8 but the smaller one and the 5.8 is the plus model with two cameras ?

Too pretty to be a product of Cook's Apple ;)

Also.. iPhone 7s?!? ***** seriously? Haven't we had enough of this chassis for the last 4 years?

So what are we expecting though from a "new chassis?" I know it's the same design, but how much can it change? No matter what it's gonna be a rectangle with a screen. They will get it about 10% too thin so the battery life is just below where we would want it. Besides that, it's either squared or rounded edges and that's about it. If it's rounded, it's the same.

I'm expecting it to not be physically indistinguishable from the iPhone 6. It's not that impossible, no?

Apple's fragmentation of everything is a mess. iPhones, iPads, Macs - just have mini/SE/whatever, regular and pros for everything.
Isn't that what they have?
iPad has the new iPad, the mini, and the Pro in two sizes. The rest have been discontinued.
The Mac has the forgotten Mini, the forgotten Pro, the iMac in two sizes, the laptops are MacBook, the MacBook Pro, and what appears to be a "we sell the Air but we are not going to upgrade it because the Book is the future of our laptop lines."
The iPhone has the SE for the small form factor, the 6s for those who want a headphone jack and a 4.7 inch screen at a reduced price and the 7 with its top of the line features in 2 sizes.
Did I miss something?
It seems like there is some choice but certainly not fragmentation.
Look back at Apple's line of desktop computers of yore if you want to see fragmentation.

iPhone 5/5S/SE has the best design Apple has ever made.it's the best 4 inch smartphone in the market right now.hope Apple keep it refreshing
I disagree, sharp edges and tiny screens are not desirable. Sounds like a poor design to me. Everyone likes something different but it's pretty obvious which design was more popular.

6 models feel so much better in the hand and the only thing I don't like are the antenna bands and camera bump.

Crossing my fingers that is true and that the SE gets updated. By far my favorite iPhone model.

Also hoping Apple sticks with space gray for the new SE too (but not holding out hope).

Sorry, but i don' t think so.
Perhaps in the next 2 years, but not now.
You also have to calculate that total screen size is not all. There is also width and lengtg of the screen.Let me explain:
I currently have a 5.5 inch 7 plus , and the iphone 8 will have a 5.8 inch screen, but the iphone 8 screen will have less width than my 7 plus, it will just have more length, and that is really a shame. I rather have a 6.3 inch screened iphone that wilk have the same widt but is longer than my 7+.
In the future , when there is better oled supply apple will release an 8+ with a +/- 6.3 oled screen.

man i wish this will never happen 6.3 is to big we should stop making the phone bigger , peopel hates the size of the regular iphone 6 becucase its to big and the want something smaller i think 5.8 is enough and apple shopuld offer an iphone with 5 inches iphone and make 5.8 the plus model

I think the perspective looks fine. I've taken lots of photos of paperwork and items like this in an office environment, not of iPhone shells, mind you, but the lighting seems right.

Love the sharp edges and small form of the 5s/SE. It is very pocketable and doesn't feel like it is going to slip out of your hand.

This is technically the first real leak we have and it proves to us we know nothing as of yet. Heck, we don't even know how many phones is going to be released or what it's going to be called.
All we can deduce is that Apple does not intend on releasing just one tier of "real" iphone this year, maybe never again. They obviously want one iPhone for your grandma (and yearly upgraders), and another up-market one for Jay-Z and aspiring Jay-Zs :)

YES, YES, YES. Please let this be real, scale of the Apple logo to the body seems to suggest it's SE sized. Please Apple don't abandon the SE form factor. I hope this is real.
You mean, that "light up" Apple logo? lol.

Disappointed in the curved edges. Sharp edges are so much better at grip.

Apple needs to go back to the 5s/SE design.

Honestly I'd be fine with the SE to stay exactly the same externally from now on and they just update the internals when they hit the same price as the current model's did when it was launched. For me it's pretty much the perfect size and shape as it is IMHO, they don't need to mess about with it.

I'm saying- there is an Air for one thing, a Mini for another, an SE for another and then you have a pro computer with touchbar/one without- it's just confusing/could be better laid out.

Excellent post. I honestly never thought someone would share my thoughts on this. When I owned the SE, as it easy was to hold with its smaller size, the sharp edges really annoyed me. It didn't hurt, but it wasn't comfortable either. And the screen resolution was also another down fall for me.

When I went back the iPhone 7, it felt ideal in my hand with the curved casing and how smooth it was. I liked the SE, but I would never go back.
