We have to assume some software features will be missing as well. Otherwise, a LOT of people will skip the iPhone 5S and just get a plastic iPhone instead. Will be interesting to see how the marketing team figured this one out....

Just Eww

The plastic casing looks worse than an Android phone. The colors are just awful. The gloss is hideous. The overall build looks extremely cheap. I pray this is merely a rumor.

What would the naming be then?

Low cost iphone = iphone
Iphone 5s = the new iphone / iphone pro :D

Cause obviously apple would drop the numbering when this one comes out, just like the ipad.

I read somewhere that it could be called the iPhone Lite. They could drop the numbering from the main iPhone at the same time, just like they did with the main iPad when the iPad mini came out.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they dropped the "touch" name from the iPod - especially if they finally introduce a 128GB version to replace the iPod classic.

I wonder what camera it'll get? The 5mpx cam of the current iPod touch? The 8 mpx cam of the current iphone 5? Or the upcoming 13 mpx cam of the iphone 5S? Hmmm.

i hope you realise it's just extremely glossy because of the protection foil

will be interesting to see the hardware of this baby. i'm guessing something like the ipad 4 vs ipad mini. 1 generation older chip and camera... but that would destroy iphone 5 sells... hmm

The colours, especially the yellow, look too dull to be the real thing. That's probably why they look like cheap knock-offs.

Clear plastic? Well now that WOULD look like a small child's toy. Are you serious?

i think most of these look ugly and cheap.

best idea of a plastic iPhone for consumers wouldve been this concept based on the original bondi blue imac, in varied colors;

much more apple like.

and some people are confused to think that them looking cheap is acceptable because its a 'cheap' iphone.

we all know that its not going to be cheap. its not going to be a cheap iPhone, its just going to cost less. proof of this is Apple's iPad Mini. and this is actually good news. we dont want Apple to become sony. spreading itself too thin by selling products on a wide range of price and quality.

Apple should stay true - stick to selling premium products and experiences. the philosophy of a product in their ranges should be the category of the product and the use its designed for or market.

it should NEVER be designed for a 'cheaper price' or building a product around price.

examples that shine most in apples current products are macs and ipods. and recently, iPads.

iPad mini's philosophy is greater portability - an everything anywhere device beyond the small size experience of pocket based devices like phones or iPods.

Macs. we know the story of macs, pro and consumer. portability/power/ultra portable.

iPods: Storage / collection; classics. iOS: Touch's. Shuffle: Gym/Exercise/Work . etc..

apple Should bring the philosophy of different categories to iPhones, but it should not be about price. only product. some people might not be concerned with the latest and greatest technologies in an iPhone, they might simply just want the apple OS experience (iOS).

1 area of category is phone/screen size, like macs. some people want bigger and smaller phones.

Have you not seen iOS 7?

Indeed I have and I can agree they are also "neony" but slightly better. In general, I like the new look of iOS 7 but I'm hoping Apple will rework the logos and hopefully the colours.

But then again fashion is a constant cycle, rehashing past designs... so I guess the 80's are back :(

The 80's have been back for a while. Retro style is in. All the 80's bands have suddenly re-appeared to tour again.

They're not my cup of tea but I'm sure the kids will love these.

Because these look more serious?

what you describe as 'childs toy' appearance is the same design used on apples first most successful products since Steve jobs return.

Now I WOULD buy that iPhone. :D Very, very cool. The only iPhones I have not had are the 3G and 3GS. I refuse to buy a plastic phone.

I'm having flashbacks of people sharing photos of little hairline fractures in their white plastic backs that dirty up and look awful over time.

Black iPhones only, please! White for all the iPods, black for the iPhones & iPads. A real Product(RED) version that's more like the anodized-aluminum-red would be nice. The colors rumored here are pathetic; even the blue, although that's probable the best one.

(If I could mod to that matte, transparent bondi-blue plastic, I would!)

Is anyone else as completely unipressed as I am by the shades that are depicted in the photo? Except for the white, I find those color shades completely repulsive :p

Cant "cheap" still look good?.. Especially when it is only cheap as defined by Apple. :(

This makes your front page, but you push Apple being sued for anti-competitive practices to the iOS Blog?

Well, it is MacRUMORS. Apple being sued is a perpetual fact. ;)

I don't know if it's the bad quality of the photo, or if these really are fakes, but I would be surprised if this is the final color. These look horribly ugly. They seem like colors straight out from the 80's with that neon yellow, green and almost pinkish red....

Look carefully and you can see they are covered in shipping plastic. That could be screwing with the camera sensor. The photo is a cheap one and likely the levels were played with to improve it. That could have had an affect on colour rendering.

The "low cost phone for poorer markets" is just a smoke screen, they will a friggin ton of these here in the states. This will be the first time iPhones are imported in from other markets.

These are the trendy, get noticed, phone case colors all the kids have these days. Apple using them as the actual base color, cleverly keeps the kids from cover ing up their phones.

I really don't get the concept of having all those different colors. It creates an inventory nightmare. If you want different colors just get an inexpensive case and you can have any color you want and change it at any time.

I don't think it will. If its going to be a true iPhone lite it'll be one size and one size only. Remember this phone will replace the lower cost 4s in the iPhone lineup.

I hate to admit this, but I kind of like these colored iPhones. I'm assuming the garish look in the photos will be toned down/polished in the final product. I don't like the red, because it looks orange. The blue has promise. I'm not sure how I feel about the white bezel.

Even though I've read that Apple is designing these to make inroads in the China and India markets, I think they will sell like hotcakes in the US. Are there any other smartphones that come in multiple colors? I'm not aware of any, but I don't keep up with that kind of thing. The colors will make it unique and will breathe new life into the iPhone.

However, I will stick with my black iPhone, because I'm afraid I would get tired of the wild color.

If Apple would design a phone with interchangeable colored backs, women would really go for those because their phone could coordinate with their outfit.

...acknowledges that the shells could be Chinese copies...

Well, if you want to keep piracy, fraud, high prices, etc, down, don't set up shop in unregulated countries that let the sort of copies that said company otherwise whines about be made in the first place... *sigh* Apple wants it both ways. Not a good ethical or business practice...
