Hit and miss is the right word! Haha I ran a speed test in the middle of a farely large lake and got 1.5MB/s down, was interesting...almost as if the lake had a dedicated cell site! I usually run a test in new places or if I suspect Im in a good service area (or alternatively bad service area :O ). And yes the 1.2second ping over 1xRTT is pretty horrendous...can't imagine facetime over that...

Haha yeah I'll never understand. Facetime? You're better off taking pictures and sending them back and forth ;)

The first thing I thought when I heard verizon iPhone 4 was "Man if Apple ever allows facetime over 3G there are going to be some pretty pissed off verizon iPhone users!".

Did some speed tests this morning while in an interesting area. All hilly so I'm assuming I'm picking up 850Mhz EvDO but it was fast!

AT&T must be improving in my area because I just tried again and I somehow beat the last test I did. This is the first time I've ever gotten over 6Mbps over 3G, and 160 is a pretty good ping too.

No picture, sorry.

AT&T 3G. 2 bars.

Miami, FL.

PING = 546ms
DOWNLOAD = 0.55 Mbps
UPLOAD = 0.07 Mbps

You guys get some good speeds. This is from my apartment.

First and last results are 3G. I took the second one just now and it's the highest I've seen. Especially the upload speed!

Of course, my home WiFi just humiliates the 3G connection. Too bad the iPhone doesn't support 5Ghz, it could be as fast as my MacBook.

It's improving here. Funny thing is, my old iPhone 3G gets full signal, my 4 gets 3 bars.

I think Verizon may be on to this thread :D I've been seeing a steady increase in 3G speeds from my home. All the ones I've taken have been in town but the ones above are me sitting in my kitchen and the nearest cell site isn't exactly right across the street. Only 3 bars as well so I'm guessing its a capacity thing but I was getting these data rates last night.
----------------------------
Just for reference for the GSM iPhone users curious about network upgrades speed actually has allot to do with what upgrades the network has done to towers in the area. The HSPA protocol upgrade goes as following:
-HSDPA 1.8Mbits/s
-HSDPA 3.6Mbits/s
-HSDPA 7.2Mbits/s
-HSDPA 14.4Mbits/s
-------------------
-HSUPA 1.46Mbits/s
-HSUPA 2.93Mbits/s
-HSUPA 5.76Mbits/s
-HSUPA 11.5Mbits/s*
-------------------
-HSPA+ 21.1Mbits/s
-HSPA+ 28.0Mbits/s*
-HSPA+ 35.3Mbits/s*
-HSPA+ 42.2Mbits/s*

*They require Dual Cells and MIMO. HSDPA (High speed DOWNLINK packet access) is only going to effect the downlink portion, HSUPA is for the uplink portion and most of the tech is in the phones chipset and HSPA refers to both upgrades and in general the whole family. So 3G HSPA doesn't seam like it will ever look "slow" in comparison to LTE...in fact I think when you look at these data rates you'll see why some carriers like T-Mobile and AT&T are branding there HSPA as "4G"! Still AT&T for the most part is still working on 14.4 and 7.2 and the phones chipset has to support it. iPhone 3G only supports HSDPA 3.6, while the iPhone 3GS and 4 support 7.2 (in addition to HSUPA 5.76) and interestingly enough the CDMA iPhone 4 supports HSPA+ 14.4Mbits/s quad band UMTS it just lacks a SIM slot and the proper signaling chip for UMTS (I'd like to see a mod for this soooo bad).

I am with O2 living outside of a city in the UK, what is this 3G of which you speak? :rolleyes:

Wow you Verizon people have some ****** ass speeds.

AT&T has improving speeds in the last couple weeks I noticed. I love hitting 6mbps down regularly now.

*Snip, Snip!*

Yeah..Verizons max theoretical data rates for there 3G network is 3.1MB/s downlink and 1.8 up...not going to change anytime soon either....

Jealous of some of the AT&T speeds in here.

I travel all around the country and get these speeds. + I get unlimited data with tethering for £15 a month. Amazing network 3 is.

And lol this is with 2 bars. Outside I often reach 6.9MB/s

Indoors on the 2nd floor of my home in Anaheim, CA USA:

Oh yeah, I have a 16GB White iPhone 4 (not sure if that makes any difference...)

This is on my iPad 2 tethered to my iPhone 4 so don't mind th WIFI label on the speedtest.

I'm consistently above 6Mbps at my house but get around 3-4Mbps at my office as there is much higher density of users in the area.

Just ran mine on AT&T 3G in Arlington Texas and god

DOWN: 4.77 Mbps
UP: 1.22 Mbps
Ping: 211 ms
