Was disappointed with BP today when I wanted to fill up with gas. They removed the pay inside button on their pumps, instead you have to go inside, pay for a certain amount, and then go back outside and pump the gas. Apple Pay works fine if you tell them how many gallons or how much you wish to spend. However, I wanted to fill up the tank. Wasn't sure the exact gallons or dollar amount, so had to settle and guessed low.

Used it at McDonalds, Rite Aid, and Panera Bread. The clerk at Panera wasn't too sure how to let me use it, the manager had to come over. When the clerks know what button to push it is very fast and better than pulling out my wallet.

You just put the nozzle in your car then go inside and it'll let you pay inside and fill up.

If you overpay - say you pay $50 but only use $43.00 - you'll get the difference either credited back or given to you in cash.

I only have that problem if my phone is not perfectly in portrait position. The slightest turn and it won't work.

Apple Pay only works in portrait but not landscape. I'm not sure why anyone would want to hold it in landscape with both hands (not to mention being cumbersome to authenticate with TouchID while in landscape) when you could just hold it on portrait with one hand with the thumb on TouchID.

just went to McDonald's at Walmart and the NFC wouldn't pull up Apple Pay. Got annoyed and just pulled out my card.
Is this frequent at the Walmart McDonalds?

Walmart doesn't support Apple Pay. So none of its inside stores like McDs do.

Umm yes it does. Why so much misinformation?

The McDonalds inside of Walmart is not owned or run by Walmart.

----------

If your specific Walmart store doesn't support Apple Pay, it won't work with McDonald's within Walmart.

McDonalds is a separate entity from Walmart and many McDonalds have working inside of Walmart even though the Walmart itself still has the old grey terminals.

That's sometimes but not always true. As McDonald's are franchised they may elect to use the same terminals as Walmart.

I'd never rely on things being consistent with stores within a store, including McDonald's in airports and Starbucks within Target and some universities.

I haven't been too impressed with Apple Pay lately. Probably fails half the time I try it and I admit that I feel a little sheepish every time. Granted, I'm not always trying it at one of the official sponsors. But still, just shows that this thing has a ways to go before it becomes a first option in how we pay.

Very true. I used Apple Pay today at a Subway inside a Walmart.

I had to educate the cashier, and all of the employees gathered to watch the magic show, but it worked.

220000 locations is a small percentage of the millions of store locations in the U.S. Each day more places get added. Be patient ApplePay has legs.

I finally got to use Apple Pay. At McDonald's, worked flawlessly and quick. And at Macy's, the cashier was impressed.

But I noticed Apple Pay creates a new credit card number looking at the last 4 digits on my receipts

That's the point, and a dynamic CVV value so if the store gets hacked, you can delete and re add your card, and you're safe from the hacks.

As I've mentioned earlier, even my local IGA, total mom and pop owned just added an attachment that sits on the top of their terminals to accept Apple Pay and other NFC options. It's growing for sure.

.. and to make it even better the Device Account Number apparently is random; i.e. there's no mathematical or cryptographic relationship to your real card number, thus preventing a crook from ever "working backwards" to get the card number.

My bank doesn't work with Apple pay yet so I haven't been able to try it yet.

FYI Citi has a nice double-cash mastercard, 2% cash back.

Tried it last night. Worked in a few places.

Nike, Ralph Lauren, and McDonalds all have NFC terminals.

Do you really need to delete and re-add your card if a store gets hacked? It's random anyway and cannot be traced.

It actually issues a one-time unique number in addition to the DAN, which doesn't change. In fact, if you look at the last 4 digits of DAN on all the receipts using Apple Pay, they don't change with the same card.

So three bits of information: Device account number, one-time unique number and dynamic security code.

Over the holiday weekend I bought two items at BB: a USB Wi-Fi and the MacBook Pro.

When I bought the first item I asked him can I pay with my phone? He said no the system is broken. I told him please be honest and tell me that it was turned off.

When I bought the MacBook Pro the salesperson was honest they indeed turned it off. He told me that they are under contract with CurrentC and when that expires the company might turn it on. I really liked his honesty and knowledge.

Yesterday at BJs it worked like a charm. At Petco I had to change registers because the terminal wasn't working correctly. The customer behind me starting asking a lot of questions about Apple Pay and thought it was a great system.

Last purchase was at Wawa for hot chocolate. Even though I was paying cash I questioned the clerk about their NFC terminal. She said it was turned off because there's so many problems with mobile payments. Mind you - they are part of the CMX consortium. The friend I was with told her the company was lying because it's such an easy process (my friend works at Wegmans - great supporters). The hot chocolate was good.

Right. That's the Device Account Number. It doesn't change (unless you delete/re-add).

My point was that if someone gets the DAN there's no way they could use it to figure out your real card number.

I would never buy electronics at Best Buy again after having numerous issues with their staff, and nothing to do with Apple Pay. Not having Apple Pay at BB is just icing on the cake and the cherry on top reason of why I don't like Best Buy.
