Why not?

OS X is pretty much crippled for me right now under Snow Leopard. Not to mention the hardware runs hotter regardless of SMC and PRAM resetting.

Leopard didn't have these game breakers like Snow Leopard does. You don't care about 0 new features when your browser doesn't work and 30 minutes are shaved off of your battery life.

OS X is crippled? you're running a browser right now aren't you?

just because you are a first day adopter, and the first patch didn't fix all of the updates, doesn't mean it's "crippled"

I notice an annoying amount of lag when I right click on the dock in snow leopard to bring up the expose styled smoke menus. This can't be a CPU related issue as I have a 2.4ghz dual core processor.

Ughhhh, I hate all the hang ups in SL. Never experienced any in Leopard.

Mail app oddnesses

I've noticed, since installing 10.6 (default install on top of 10.5.8) that Mail no longer allows me to search by message content. That option is always greyed out.

Since sometime in the past (not sure when it started, but 10.5.x), mail has periodically asked me for the password for my comcast pop mail account. Also, it often keeps that account off line, in spite of my orders to do otherwise.

Not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but EVERY time I start my mac, the sound is on...even if I turn the sound off when I shut down. I don't remember it doing this before which is annoying if Im late to class and then my comp makes it even more obvious haha.

10.6.1 does fix it.

an upgrade for me was fine but then i decided to do a clean install and copy over my data and reinstall the apps to start 'fresh'.

but now System Preferences sporadically doesnt respond when i open it. the icon just bounces but never opens. i have to force quit and then it will launch. ive sent a bug report every time if that helps Apple to squash bugs for future udpates. does anyone know how to fix this?

anyone else had the same problem? or better yet a solution?

Disk Utility Stops Responding/Unable to open optical drive

I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and everything seems to work okay. However after I have been working a while if I open disk utility it just spins and does not locate any drives (I have 4 internal and 1 drobo) The activity monitor indicates that Disk Utility is not responding. If I try to open my Optical Drive it will not open either.

If I reboot the system both the optical drive will open and disk utility will find and recognize the drives. I can run the repair permissions program. After I go to other applications and work. The problem reappears.

Reinstalled Snow Leopard and update same problem.

iPhoto disappeared with Snow Leopard install

I have installed SN on my 20" iMac, with no problems except my iPhoto program has disappeared, any suggestions will be appreciated. This is my 1st Mac, just a couple of weeks. will be glad for any help.

I'm having the exact same problem with CS4. I'm probably going to restore my system (UGH!!!) and go back to Leopard until Apple admits that there is a problem and resolves it.

I'm using old PS CS. It hasn't totally crashed on me yet, but it does move very slowly... opening and saving.

SL bugs

SL Upgrade from Leopard
-Apps way slow to open
-iphoto not updating pics... I import the pic in iphoto , but when I'm in Safari, and go to upload a pic on my blog, the pic I've just imported isn't there.
-top sites sometimes does this weird pixel freak out when I click it
-iphoto, safari function slower
-photoshop... I nearly have to click, then walk away for 10 minutes while it opens!!! Luckily I haven't had the crashes others have had.

Pretty bummed so far... thought this was supposed to be bettter...

One thing that really makes me mad about Snow Leopard is the new volume reset. So when I shut down and my sound is muted, at reboot it resets itself to max sound. Anyone else experiencing this? Another problem is how Spaces doesn't react to the hot key anymore.

Don't do an SL install if you are using Adobe Apps

All CS4 stuff is totally unstable. You will cry.

Logitech mouse drivers are gone - so tons of speed functionality that I used to have is no more.

Entourage spotlight search stops - but you can fix this yourself - I found a thread on what to do on one of the MR forums. It works.

I got Cyberduck FTP back up and working again after reading some other threads and doing an update. It wouldn't even launch before.

Too scared to use Final Cut!

MS Word and Excel both crash.

Not impressed with the speed of Finder when accessing different drives or doing fast file moving operations etc. I was expecting a noticeable speed difference. I move big files around all the time and I'm a fast operator - therefore I am a friend of the multicoloured beach ball. No visible speed improvement currently - in fact, I think it's actually slower. Perhaps it's just me.

Firefox crashes a lot.

I think Snow Leopard will be what the pundits have told us that it already is. I await some third party updates (like adobe and Logitec) and obviously, I am now putting all my hope in 10.6.2 whenever that appears.

Lovely Mac Pro on my desk with dual 30" screens - and I've had to go back to old grubby MacBook.

I've updated from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1.

Opening files caused any program to crash. So I reinstalled 10.5.8.

Seems to be a permission issue with 10.6.

Thought I'd just add

My Canon scanner 5600F is now bricked - as is my Fujitsu ScanSnap and also my Dymo 320 label printer. 100% failure across these.

Been on to all the appropriate websites for update - or at least news on updates. Nothing as of 16/09/09

Don't third party providers get pre-release and beta versions of new OS before the public? I wish someone could have warned me - as I am now warning you. if you are a heavy graphics and multi peripheral user - i suggest you wait a little longer before Sl upgrade. By contrast Leopard 10.5.8 is rock solid. Stick with it!

My HP laser printer seems to work fine.... so that's one thing at least.

Basically I am at a productivity standstill.

Why did I do it?

Why?...... Why?

I have only myself to blame in many ways. I learned this lesson when I was a Windows user. I guess I thought Apple would be better at it.

Perhaps Apple don't feel especially responsible for the readiness of third party hardware and software providers.

Shame.

I installed SL (10.5.8 upgrade method) on my brand new MBP yesterday, and experienced the 'no backlight' problem during the installation. After the reboot partway through, the screen goes black - and stays black, and you need to shine a light on the screen to see what's going on. Very very poor QC on this release. Thankfully my trusty iBook was nearby so I could search for a solution online.

Overall, SL seems okay so far. Apps are definitely slower to start though. I've also noticed that wireless drops off occasionally.

Snow Leopard not quite right

I have found that I needed to activate manually every single 3rd party AU plug-in for Logic studio 9...all 134 of them!!!....KORG WALDOF SONALKSIS and WAVES and never had to before.
I run dual display system and sometimes run only the second monitor,SL now forgets to disable the MBP monitor when ever I switch it.
Safari was initially quicker but is now markedly slower.
Cutting edge is the bleeding edge I should have learned my lessons from past experiences.

Actually I would say that is exactly what it means.

Apple doesn't do things like Blizzard does, a patch is made because their are flaws in the OS that need adressing, certainly not to add features (they charge for that).

Have two Macs. The newest Mac Mini and a second Gen Macbook Pro (first one with C2D processor).

Installed SL Family pack via upgrade on the Mac Mini first and everything smooth at the moment.

Installed SL Family pack via upgrade on my MBP and the HDD spun endlessly leaving the system useless/frozen up completely. This could be triggered by searching via spotlight and browsing with safari. So I completely reindexed spotlight. The problem persisted.

Did a clean install of SL on my MBP C2D, left it alone while indexing spotlight, didn't put many files on it (only the basic programs) and it still has the same problem. The HDD is spinning out of control and the system freezes up for about 3-5 minutes, then the HDD is quiet again and I can use my system.

Anybody else have this issue with the HDD?

Just wanted to add.

Found and resolved the problem.

I had a boot camp partition on my MBP and after each SL install, one of the few programs I had running was Paragon NTFS for Mac.

So essentially, my spotlight would try to index the BootCamp NTFS partition (which happened after the upgrade install and a clean install, since I kept my Windows partition and only erased my Mac partition) which would lead to these freezes.

Suppose it has to do with the way Paragon's NTFS for Mac translates the mds process's commands....

Just in case anyone has a similar problem, dragging the "Untitled" boot camp NTFS partition into the privacy list of Spotlight in the System Preferences solved the issue for me.

password issue

I am on vacation so I have my MBP set to require a password on waking up. The other day I checked for updates with Adobe updater. I downloaded the updates it got to the point where it required my password to actually install the updates and I had to go and do something so I closed my MBP. When I tried logging back in the window to log back in would not stay selected because the other password window for the install had taken priority, but I couldn't get to that window without entering my password to log back in. I ended up having to restart. Annoying.
