Firewall problems

Firewall has caused me two problems: Screen sharing did not function (screen sharing button absent in finder window), and DVD sharing is disabled even though function is enabled in the firwall screen.

I solved the first problem by turning off the firewall, starting a screen share, and then turning on the firewall. Screen sharing button is now back, even for a computer I did not access with the firewall turned off.

The second problem I have not yet solved, but have included screen shots.

Mmm. I've been using SL for 10 mins and:

• dock has broken. Can't get it to appear, although it appears briefly after turning hiding on/off before it disappears again. Magnification not working for the brief period it's on screen.

• cursor in Safari has stopped highlighting links.
 
Spotlight indexing

Spotlight has been "Estimating indexing time" for more than 60 hours now. Will it ever stop? :mad:

while i do agree with you about this release being a little half-baked, overall i think they did a damn good job given the amount of things changed. however, if you're a supposed software developer, you'd know that a clean install is ALWAYS the way to go. i think the "i have too many configurations and applications" is a load of crap. i have a ton of applications and so many custom configs that it takes me several days to get everything set up after a reinstall. i think it's definitely worth and so far i've had zero problems.

Not everyone wants to or can take days to get their computers back to where they want them to be. Obviously, this man has better things to do with his time than reinstall all of his apps and customize everything all over again.
 
I am having constant issues with connecting to the wireless at my college campus ever since the upgrade to SL.

I have to sometimes delete the Airport protocol in Network settings just to connect. I don't even know where to begin with how buggy VPN is now.

10.6 was released prematurely in my mind. ugh.
 
Photoshop CS 4 just quit unexpectedly under Rosetta (need it for my scanner driver). Was changing from greyscale to RGB and it tripped up.

And when I restart, for some reason Quit is greyed out.
 
Upgrade

So far the only glitches are related to third party apps/plugins that are not supported (Quicksilver, Glims, Growlmail, SafariAdBlock, IStats, etc).
If you have software/plugins that are no longer supported I would suggest complete/clean uninstalls them -- deleting all plist files and plugin folders. After cleaning out these files, Snow Leopard is reliable and very fast.
 
I have two problems so far:

1) I had my F11 key set to "Activate Spaces" (the view where you can see all of the spaces at once). For some reason, this no longer works and nothing happens when I press F11.

2) My custom screensaver, Desktop Puddle, no longer works! The are some interesting new default screensavers, though.
 
HSPA modem status wont appear in the menu bar, box actually unchecks its self when checked!

this is not a snow leopard problem. they updated the remote desktop connection a few weeks ago which broke it.
if you go to the vnc app in the itunes store the update to fix this has been submitted and we're waiting for apple to approve it.
 
Clean install on MacBook Late 2006 (white).

FYI: Tried Leo for just some days back then, early versions sucked, went back to Tiger & never bothered to update again until SL. The migration of my main user from an external USB drive on which I cloned the Tiger install before SL install took some time, but worked fine (most probably - it´s just 2 days now ;) )

Flaws/glitches and things I just don´t like (or even hate)

1. Battery menubar icon (and pref pane as well) do not allow profiles like before. Esp. if working as a standard user, this is a BIG issue, as you could change the energy profile with the icon, but need to identify as admin now.
On Flickr somebody complained about the same after update to 10.5.6, in 10.5.7 it was back the post says. Apple - bring it back in SL !!! Prbbly most important reason to downgrade for me :-(

2. The Dock looks ugly when on either side of the screen, IMO. Don´t like the border around the transparent area. Don´t like the area´s color. Heck, I hate the WHOLE Dock color scheme now ... Compared to Tiger of course.

3. Setting options as default for all windows IMO is a setback, does not seem to always work correctly. I think I now have *nearly* what I want after opening a single Finder window, shift-cmd-C to "Computer", change View Options of the "computername" Finder window and hitting "Set to default for all" mostly did it. I don´t like the new style & miss the All/This windows switch in the View Options.

4. Neither Quartz Composer nor Photo Booth allow me to use macam.component supported (non-Apple) web cams anymore. The cams still work in Skype and Comic Life...

5. Just a little thing: Don´t like many of the new icons. Well - need to get used to it or change them :-/

6. "Help Viewer" is always on top and has no icon in Dock. Hope there is a toggle for this.

7. No more "Text to Speech" in the Services menu. Rightclick on selection works (tried only in textedit and help viewer). And older applications have no Services at all anymore (but we knew before).

8. Not sure about the better SL speed - maybe Tiger wasn´t slower than SL, only Leo was? Pretty happy about the lower disk usage, though.

9. Finder: At the beginning, some programs, files, the Utilities folder had no icons, but somehow they appeared later (dunno why...). Also disconnected network drives sometimes left "ghost" drive icons in Finder windows, but don´t anymore (I think).

10. And the killer issue: networking problems!

A NAS drive running Samba 3.0.6 does not work correctly anymore:
Copying files to NAS with Finder: OK
Copying files to NAS with cp: OK
Copying files from NAS with Finder: Error, "Unknown Error - 8084", truncated file of length 1032192 bytes (=0xFC000) left at destination
Copying files from NAS with cp: Damaged file at destination, exactly 65536 (=0x10000) byte too short, NO ERROR, return status 0!!!

Another samba server (3.0.33) appears to work OK.
There were also some NFS issues I have look at again, possibly only in Terminals, not when using Finder, but have to recheck to be sure.


Will downgrade back to Tiger again on my MacBook and install SL on an external drive for testing. Unless energy profiles (pmset still has them, though the pref pane doesnt care) are re-enabled, SL is much less useful on notebooks (and I would go so far to say I would not buy any Macbook again, as I planned before SL - pretty sure Win7 will do this better!). The networking problems is (for me) a real killer as I cannot update samba 3.0.6 on that NAS drive anytime soon. Throw in the QC issues, that´s it for me.

Hope they´ll fix this... if not, I will be stuck with 10.4. and no more mobile Apples for me :-(
 
Mouse wheel / 2finger drag on pad - do not move Volume Control anymore?

Not sure about this - but IIRC i could use the mouse wheel and/or the two-finger drag on the touchpad to move the slider? :confused:

EDIT: ok, still works if I move the pointer onto the slider´s path, so this is no issue.
 
Battery issues with 10.6

I installed 10.6 yesterday, no issues. Today I go to the bookstore to hang out, and after 15 minutes, my MacBook Pro suddenly dies! I check the battery, 4 lights are on, so battery is good. I restart, all is good for about 5 minutes, battery level is good, then it suddenly dies again!

I called a friend at a local Apple Reseller here in Wilmington, and he said he has received several calls from people experiencing the same issue. He said he is assuming it is a software glitch. Has anyone else had this happen? If you have a laptop with 10.6, unplug it, run it on battery, and see if this happens to you.

Thanks. I understand this. Just noting a few things that worked with Leopard and not with Snow Leopard. Look forward to the update.
 
I have no problem with logmein, did you update the logmein, is a new version..

I haven't had any problems. I did a clean install on my new macbook pro and I did a backup of a mini I've been using for a little over a year. No issues at all on either machine.

It definitely has its share of bugs and random crap, which is why so many testers were bemoaning the fact that it was being released so soon. Apple has quite a job on their hands with 10.6.1, because there are a LOT of unhappy people right now.

Exactly, thank you. I run a home business and just don't have time to reconfigure and download all my PS tools that I spent months acquiring because Apple put out a half baked OS that is supposed to be an upgrade. I also don't feel like exporting everything from my current apps (e.g. Thunderbird mail, iPhoto pics etc etc) and manually backing everything up just so that I can get back to where I was pre-install.

And a big thanks to interconnect for letting me know that as a SW developer a clean install is the way to go. I never would have figured that one out. Thanks champ.
