I'm certainly looking forward to PowerMac G5 updates, even though I'm not in the market for one right now (I'm not planning on buying another Mac until January 2007). I was originally planning on buying a Rev. B PowerMac G5, until I got tired of waiting and ordered the 17" iMac G4 I have now. I'm very happy with my iMac. It has some hiccups here and there, like a slow response time when woken up from sleep mode. It is certainly fast enough for my needs. My guess is that Apple will be at revision F or G by the time I'm ready (if we're not at the G6 by then).

Hmm, well after receiving a 'your shipping date is now 25th March' email at 9am today, I've just got a 'your order has shipped' email!

Oh well, if new machines come out tomorrow I could still cancel before delivery.

I have been wanting to buy a new Power Mac G5 for the past month now. I have no idea how much longer I can really wait!! I don't want to buy anything until the new G5's come out but the waiting is driving me nuts!! I have a G3/266mhz beige tower that really needs to be updated. I am going to wait until March 30th but I have no idea wht I will do if nothing happens by then!!

c'mon! you've waited like 7 years to update that Mac, a few more weeks won't kill you! that WILL be a pretty sweet update though, stoneage to spaceage.

i'm getting a new machine here at work & i thought going from this slow-as-cr@p 400MHz G4 to a new G5 was going to be a huge bump, but i've got nothing on you. ;^)

Why does everyone think that when they order a new machine there is some guy at Apple whose job it is to stop that order and upgrade it to a new machine? When you order a computer expect to receive the model you ordered.

The only time Apple will cancel your order and upgrade it to a newer model is when they can't fulfill your order at all -- in other words, when the old model is out of stock.

For the millionth time: if you need a new Mac now, buy it now. Otherwise, wait until the new ones come out. Don't expect that Apple will look out for you and delay or cancel your order so you can get a faster machine. Apple's job is to sell computers -- especially the computers they have on hand. Your job is to look out for your own best interests.

I'm not expecting Apple to stop or change anything on my order. But, their terms and conditions clearly state I can cancel (at no cost to me) any time BEFORE delivery and within 10 days of delivery (if unopened) at a cost of £40. This covers me for both this Tuesday and next Tuesday. Its a work machine so I don't get a say in when it was ordered etc.

Did you look at the MacPolls today. As the number stands now 70% of responders will own a G5 something or other by the end of 2004. That of course is assuming that Steve's promise of 3 GHz holds true and the highly anticipated G5 powerbook makes it this year. That number is huge I think. I personally already contribute to that and I love my G5!!! The more time I spend on it the more it makes my Dual 1 GHz G4 towers seem antiquated.

Quick question. Can anybody who has bought a mac from any of the big UK Apple resellers (inc Apple Store) tell me whether the date on the invoice is the date the computer was ordered or the date it was shipped? A boring question but important to me non-the-less.

Powerbook G5

Mark my words...Powerbook G5 announcement.

Don't believe me? Ok, I'll make sure on the announcement to link back to this statement even if I'm wrong :)

Just one thought: Does anyone know for sure based on what facts Apple decides when a product will be launched once its ready to be launched? If they updated their products according to which products needs an update the most, new revision would be launched in the following order:

1. eMac
2. PB
3. iBook
4. iMac
5. PM

Since we don't know how far IBM has already come with the G5, there is a possibility that other products are updated first. So tomorrow we could see new (G4) PBs and new eMacs.

Ahh, so around September-October 2004 we will see this message quoted :p Great ;) Looking forward to it already :D

So, new machines on the 23rd would make sense :)

Dude! Cancel the order!

You will get an OLD machine, and new machines will come out less than a week later!

So it's also possible that Apple are mearly trying to beef up sales for this quarter and NOTHING is coming out anytime soon...damn :(

It just means taht Apple is trying to squeeze all the sales out the 2nd quarter as they can. It also means that they will probably release the new G5s on the 31 so all of the sales will be in 3rd quarter.

and what if it's a paper release? And customers have to wait 2 more months till they see their rev B powermacs?

It's his workmachine, and he has to decide if it's worth to him, waiting 2 more months, working on his old "more slow" machine.

I agree. If I had just ordered a dual 1.8 GHz machine, for instance, I'd stay away from rumor sites for a while. The current line-up of G5s are great (now that a lot of the bugs have been worked out). The only reason I am waiting for rev. b is because I can. My desktop, though incredibly old, is still functional -- and I have a G4 PB to boot. But if I really needed a desktop, I'd order a G5 and not look back (Never look back. Computers are updated all the time, no reason to lament an upgrade. There is nothing you can do to stop better, faster computers from being introduced.)

As I said in the other thread, I've got a Dual G5 + 17 monitor on order at the Apple UK website. When I ordered I was told 3 days to build. My order status was soon changed to 'on or before 19th March'.

Today (10 days from my order) I got an email from Apple saying that 'due to high demand we plan to ship your order on or before March 25th'.

So, new machines on the 23rd would make sense :)

The 25th is that day that Small Dog is slated to get shipments of powermacs....

Curious...

UPDATES ON THE 23rd

I'm happy to hear that you are enjoying your iMac, thats' what is really important. I plan to be patient, not really looking to purchase till the July - September time frame. Then I won't need another till 2008, so by then there should be a G6.

you are so right...i (unfortunatly) have a single 1.8 G5 but i have only slowed this thing down in FCP4 really as of now...(unless you are a freak) you can't experieriance a major slowdown on them...if you NEED a mac...buy one!

anonymous submission: "G5s are now comming up as D01 at compusa. for those that don't know what this means it is an internal code that is place on a product in the computer system to indicate a product is discontinued"

can anyone confirm?

arn

I work at CompUSA, but I'm off today so I can't confirm the D01 status. I can tell you that we haven't seen any single 1.6 machines in quite a while, we have also been out of dual 2s for about 2 weeks. As of yesterday we had about 7 or 8 dual 1.8s and those were the only machines we were getting regularly in deliveries.

It probably has to do with SEC regulations in terms of giving guidance at their conference calls. At their last call they said that gross margin would stay stable this quarter. If they released products with different margins they could be sued by stockholders for giving false guidance.

I think this points to a price cut on the iMacs.

Here is a little graph I put together for you fellow speculators.

Have a nice time speculating.

Looking back at the previous couple rounds of PM updates, shouldn't we have some "solid" information about what to expect from Apple by this time - if the 3/23 date is accurate.

Did I miss this, or are we actually still flailing about in the dark?

I just ordered a Dual 1.8 CTO G5, and they too said 3 days, but mine is now "on or before March 29th".

90 or 130?

will the next powermacs have 90nm or 130nm chips in them? does anybody know, or is it anybody's guess? did the g5 severs start shipping, yet?
