8:47 Cupertino time and the store is still up. Guess the 23rd has officially come and gone with the solid announcement of single 2Ghz XServes shipping NOW. Yeah Baby!!

Yeah, but look at it from the bright site, we're yet another day closer to that wonderful date sometime in the distant future when someone at Apple rembers: "Wait once upon time there was a company that was famous for building cool computers. What happend to them, ah I guess that was us before we decided to go into the MP3 player business..." :D

Distant ... now there's realism for you!! :p

clue from Corbis?

Have the photolibrary corbis slipped up.

On their home page they are advertising this...

corbis

"Apple G5's are almost here!"

promo_512.jpg

They are giving away I'm working out from the price, a top of the range PM G5 plus 23" monitor (price = $4,999) every weekday in April. So whether the almost here means the old ones are almost with us, or the new ones are available in ten days, I don't know, but it's worth entering anyway.

Another Tuesday w/o updates

It’s 9 am in Cupertino. So even the biggest optimist has to agree that we won’t see any update today. Time to draw the curtain. Would someone please start a “PM Updates on March 30” thread?

You guys need to pay attention to the site. The ad on the home page describes the G5 in a generic sense. It doesn't say anything about rev A, 2.0Ghz, etc. This ad could just as easily describe a 1.6 Ghz machine as a 3.0 Ghz one.
Well it does say this:

Yeah, man, that 0.1 posts per day average sucks. If we just banter a bit more about the IIci, you could be "regular" soon (ah, sounds like a laxative commercial).

tick tock tick tock.

Reason could be that Apple has stopped production of the G5, which means updates with new product numbers. This code is good news. It generally happens when updates are made, or replacements are made. It also likely means that Apple has started to produce the new G5s, which is also good becasue there won't be a long wait for delivery.

DO1 means one of two things, either Apple doesn't have enough to ship Comp for a while (unlikely in this event), or production has stopped. The problem is that they usually wait a month er so to flush out the system of old product. That would not be fun.

It does seem interesting of we assume the new monitors are out by then.

Aren't they just saying...

"our" G5s are almost here? as in, it's almost April, which is when our apple a day give away begins.

"The G5s are almost here"

:)

Actually, they ordered a bunch of dual-2's last July. They just got shipping confirmation a few days ago. :)

That's what I was thinking, but....

It seems an odd time to be giving out, what should be, at least during April, old machines and old monitors. Unless they've been given them at a special rate by Apple to help clear stock?

Something just struck me: Remember the MWSF 04 keynote; Steve Jobs said something like 2004 would be an amazing year and Apple would release amazing new things throughout the year. The first quarter of 2004 is almost over and we haven't seen anything spectacular so far. What's going on? Did Apple plan that nothing would happen between MWSF and at least end of March or did something happen that made them change their plans? (of course 10.3.3. and iPhoto 4.0.1 are great, but that can't be it, can it?)

Stupid quote

god, that is just the stupidest quote ever. I can't believe it is on Apple's front page. Every time I see it, it bugs the hell out of me.

"It's the fastest Mac I've ever used in my entire life."

I would certainly hope so! As opposed to what? A G4? A G3? If the quote said "It's the fastest computer I've ever..." then it would mean something.

"It's the fastest Mac Plus I've ever used in my entire life!"
"It's the fastest Apple II I've ever used in my entire life!!!"

No kidding. My 20" monitor is "the biggest Apple monitor I've used in my entire life!" Of course, I've got a 24" Sun monitor I've been using for 4 years, but....

I hope something amazing refers to a price drop! Or some serious updates!

My God, you got iPhoto 4.0.1 -- what more could you want? A TextEdit update? ;)

Clearly, you missed the fact that you get an extra 10 GB with the G5.
Plus, you get enough aluminum to recycle the G5, eventually, as a small car.

Xnet, you're comparing a single CPU Dell vs. a dual CPU Mac?

Should I compare the single 1.8 GHz g5 then? It gets spanked by the 3.4 GHz P4 and is still $1200 more for the same config.

Seriously what do I say to a PC user that brings this up to me?
$1200 is a lot of money.

Apple needs to do something about its price / performance.

You simply answer: "Enjoy your Windows. I know I'll be enjoying my OS X."

I think they would just laugh at me... but whatever

Such a price difference is certainly not winning over any new customers thats for sure and with Apple's current market share I'm not sure they can afford that.

OK all you Macrumor experts out there, I have a question. Let's assume, for a moment, that Apple does not release G5 updates on the 30th. My question, how often does a quarter go by where there isn't any consumer computer introductions?

I found it amazing that Apple would let the 20th Anniversary of the Mac go by without an exciting new product. Now they are only one week away from letting an entire quarter slip. Maybe the big announcement will be that Apple will drop all production of hardware and outsource it to Dell?

(I'm still betting on the 30th -- but I am not as confident as I was back in late January.)

Then maybe the Mac is not for them, and that's OK. I also think that macs are slightly overpriced but then again, I have no background in sales and marketing. I am willing to pay the Apple premium to get the Apple experience. Are you? Are they? To make an enlightened decision, they should try playing on a mac for a few hours/day. And what kinds of friends would laugh at you for having a different opinion. :D
