You can go into any store and buy tax free, and then bring it back to California. Of course, you're supposed to voluntarily send the equivalent tax to CA (and there's even a line on the CA state tax form for declaring it) - but not many people do for small purchases.

(I'm not sure if you're kidding about buying a car in OR and bringing it back to CA. Be very careful about that - only new residents of CA get to bring their cars into the state without tax implications.

When you go to get your CA license plates you could be nailed for the tax at that point if you're already a CA resident. You also don't want to try to register the car in OR - if you're ever stopped while driving with a CA driver's license in a car registered in your name in OR....)

here's hoping ^-^

dun worry, not going to buy a car in OR then drive it down to CA, used to be a washintonian and they more or less had us on watch for any OR plates to have them reported actually. Besides my parents were nice enough to buy me a car as it is (no one get mad, not a little rich kid, a G5 costs more... ... hell some of apple's monitors cost more...)

but magical discounts here I come :)

Come on Apple! Just realease the new enclosures. I don't care if it's still running the exact same hardware!! :)

How about a $300 15" CRT that has a 6.5" wide, 2" tall slot in the front that a Mac Mini slips into, automatically making all the connections in the back, and is perfectly flush with the front? Sort of a "portable" eMac.

I don't know why, but the thought of that invokes images of this:

I don't know why...:D

Simply: the entire architecture of the PowerBook needs to be revamped to start seeing meaningful performance jumps. Everything from the CPU, to the chipset, to the screen used, to a lesser extent the optical drive used. (Blue-ray anyone? Are there even drives on the market yet?) Right now it's like sucking through a dang straw. We're going to need a bigger pipe.

SA is right - the innards of the PB's are quite lame. It's like looking at a cool classic car. It might have amazing lines, but the technology is just plain old.

Whenever I pull my old (4 years) Ti PB 400 out and use it, I'm amazed at how fast it is relative to today's line of laptops. Sure, I've tricked it out with 1 GB of RAM and a fast, 30 GB HD.

But it keeps up with current systems FAR more than it should, given the 4x speed increase of current CPU's. If it had a better GPU, that Ti 400 still be my main Mac laptop, and that is a damning statement!!

The G5 is an IBM PowerPC 970 series processor. It is 64-bit, but is compatible with 32-bit software. It theoretically supports up to 16ExB (that's 16 million TB), but no motherboard in existance comes close to that capacity

An exabyte is 1024 TB, to 16EB would be 16,000 TB, not 16 million. Just a small technicality.

Hi I'm new to this forum although not at all new to this topic. :)
I agree with SiliconAddict. PB G5s (or at least PB with some new architecture) have to come out soon. Now here is my little theory:

dual-core G4s would be nice but they will not make it. The chip isn't out yet. Not even the single-core version AFAIK. So there is no way this is going to happen.

A simple speed-bump to 1.6 or 1.7 (thats at least what the rumors say) and keeping the 'old' G4 (MPC7447) would IMHO not result in an EOL. There are signs that all current models are sold out. I can't remember that this was the case with the last speed-bumps so I'm not going to buy that either.

Also if it really is EOL and they are making new cases for the PBs then this means something bigger is happening here. Convince me wrong but I don't think such a revision would last long and would not be very lucrative if they had to do another new case for the G5 until september.

And BTW: releasing something like this would be very embarrassing when at the same time Intel releases their Centrino 2 systems. So I at least hope that this won't happen!

Another possibility would be that they are going with the G4 MPC7448 with a new architecture and 200 MHZ FSB. Well thats possible for sure but at 1.6 or 1.7GHZ they wouldn't be a match either for some P4 2.1GHZ with 2MB L2 Cache.

So IMHO going with the G5 or some derivate (970GX maybe??? =lower voltage + lower heat) is the only option for Apple. Also a G5 1.6-1.7 would make sense. At least to customers it would look like a high gain in performance, simply because of the G5-effect alone :D

Now for the timing of the release:

I believe that Steve wouldn't even want to announce a PB at MWSF05 because that would have ruined all the good press for the mac mini and ipod shuffle. They would have been over-shadowed by the PB G5s.

But now these products have been in the press all over the world. Apple achieved its marketing goal.

Furthermore I believe that Apple, due to the (at least to me) surprising release of the centrino 2, feels hard pressed to release at least some-kind of upgrade to their mobil pro section. Maybe they wanted to do it on WWDC in June but lately decided to do it earlier.

So my hopes are high that we'll see the PB G5 soon!! :D

P.S.: Anyone knows when the 970GX will be ready for deployment? Cuz I'd love to see it in the upcoming PB!!!!!!! well a man may have dreams... :D

P.P.S.: This was my first post here so don't be too stern on me

a little obvious but hey! my girlfriend noticed this; they all line up perfectly IF you move the XServe. there be a lotta free space there

also (we're designers ;)) apple are known for thier design skill and style; straight lines, smooth curves. the current line up is all over the show.

HMMMM

I think that when the PowerBook G5 is announced, it will take the prominent main area of the page. The other items will be relegated to the row below as they are now. At least it appears the they could also do a split frame. :D

PB G5 could come earlier than expected ...

Most of the reasoning for no new PB anytime soon is that nothing was said at MWSF.

BUt MWSF was TOTALLY on one theme - simple devices for the consumer masses. Many of these new products were a radical departure for the old Apple that carved out the "we're the BMW of computing, so expect to pay more". Mac mini, iPod shuffle, upgrade to iPhoto, a consumer word processing package, etc.

All consumer products, low price, hopefully HUGE volume.

They quietly upgraded the Xserve the week before MW - didn't want to distract from the consumer focus.

So back to the PB 5 - why would they even THINK about taking the spotlight off the Mac mini and iPod shuffle? Powerbooks are for powerusers, those Mac faithful who don't need to be converted. If Apple introduces a PB G5 in March or April, these powerusers will now in a matter of days.

Everyone talks about how "Steve would never introduce a major update" outside of MW or the WWDC.

But everyone also said that Steve would never produce a cheap Mac under $500 ("Are you an idiot? Of course it would kill their expensive Macs") or a Flash based iPod ("Steve said these were garbage").

Apple has to address it's disappearing PB sales figures. If they don't kill the ancient PB line, it will kill itself off.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
What am I typing on then, a proccesors with no core??????
Single core proccesors are the ones currently being used. A dual core is like having 2 proccesors in one.

You people have NO CLUE dont you???

a product gets an EOL when that product is not going to be made anymore. A product being an item with a particular SKU. So the SKU is retired. each pre configured computer model has a distinct SKU. ie: the emac with a superdrive has 1 sku, the emac with a combo has 1 SKU, the CTO emac has one SKU. IF they bump the HD, that model needs a new SKU.

So this announcement, which appears to be for the local issue so far, not in the US right now, just means that particular model has been discointinued, for all we know the SKU replacement just might come with a bigger Hard Drive.

And historically WWDC is in March not May/June, last time was special.

And there wont be G5's Powerbooks for a while, (ie 3months -48 months).

The Dual core might be here soon.

I really need a new Laptop, my 17" just died today :(

my gut instinct says quad g5s in the new upcoming PB. I mean, they waited a really long time to update so i'm sure its cuz its quads with cold fusion never-dying battery life ;)

Snausages!!!

I can't believe I read them all...
I gotta say it was heated for a while, just goes to show how passionate we all get about these "little" things.
a trip to the MR buyers guide is certainly telling though...

eMac 282 days since last update (average 179) April 13, '04 Tuesday
Powerbook 276 ( 171) April 19, '04 Monday...wow
Powermac 225 ( 176) June 09, '04 Wednesday...some seven weeks after the powerbook.
Ipod (not shuffle) 185 (167) July 19, '04 Monday
Imac 142 (193) August 31 '04 Tuesday
iBook in October 19 '04 Tuesday

I'm just in the "You can't make everybody happy." camp.

I've got a long wait if the iBook 12" is ever to get a Superdrive...
unless Apple has decided to condense their line-up and bring the price-tag down overall... Build-to-order profit.
as long as we're at YCMEH Camp...
The clamshell Ipod/Pda (Newton shhh) that will never happen could fill the old ibook status... you know, while we wait for that G5.
Oh yeah... snausages...lol

Tone down the attitude. He said "the chip" which was directly in reference to the dual-chip G4s processors being discussed, not all processors in general.

He is correct; the dual core g4 will have a single core version, which does not exist in any of apple's present hardware.

I was just sharing my thoughts man. You don't have to agree with me. ;)
I'm also not declaring my conclusions as absolute or definite to come true.

Again I sayed:

If you read it carefully, you'll notice that I was talking about the dual-core G4. Just 2 sentences later I'm refering to it as I say that the single-core VERSION is not out either.

Again, I'm just sharing my thoughts... ;)
