now we have too much time on our hands

Okay, now we are looking way too hard. Finding an article or a support page that says "PowerBook G5" doesn't mean anything. It is most likely a typo. Let's not go crazy and make such a big deal out of somebody mistakenly writing a 5 instead of a 4, on a "Power----".

Now, the thing that started this thread was a hidden part of html code that said "g5_powerbook" and was changed after the "news" was spread around the web. It didn't really mean much when it appeared, until the code was changed back to "g4_powerbook" hours after the rumors and news spread. Another thing that made it interesting was that if you looked at an archived source code of the page it did not contain that part of the code until recently.

If you google for PowerBook G5, the first article that appears is The Register who supposedly were the first ones to announce that finding, but it actually happened here on Mac Rumors.

I can't believe that the main MacRumors page was updated with the finding on the French website. That most likely is a typo and has no relation to first news. That's not an invisible link to a marketing company's website after all, like the 1x1 gif that was initially found.

Initially this was actually news, because it was true, but now it's just turning into any old rumor. People are looking too hard.

Well at least it keeps us on our toes and talking.

I think the point is that these "typo's" are suddenly turning up with increasing frequency. That in itself implies something may be up, especially since there have been Apple website leaks before on a number of occasions.

Speculation is what rumor sites exist for.

Pics and specs of the PMG5 were posted the night before the announcement, IIRC. Typos and such from apple.com tend to be both frequent and accurate lately.

And yet another web designer will get "Steved"...the beautiful Circle of Life continues.

Hey, I remember reading that Apple was hiring (in the Web area) a few weeks ago :D

Someone Must Go

Everyone here seems to have time and money. Someone should just go to Taiwan to see wtf is going on. :D

This conversation occured yesterday, between myself and a very friendly sales rep at a Mac reseller:
//
Me: Hi, i was looking at getting a powerbook soon, but i've read on the net that there could be an upgrade coming soon. Do you know anything about it?

Rep: Um (she didn't really know how to respond), which model were you thnking about getting?

Me: The 15'' with superdrive.

Rep: So when did were you planning on buying?

Me: Within the next few weeks, so i can have it for school.

Rep (whispers): Ok, well I'm not supposed to say anything, but all I'll say is wait. (The way she said it implied that something really big was on the way, not just a minor speed bump). I'll also give you the current price list because the prices shouldn't change too much.

Me: Thankyou very much for that.
//
Needless to say i left the store very excited :)

This along with all the recent 'typos', extended shipping dates, lack of any updates (even minor ones), no mention at MWSF of anything PB related, surely points to something BIG (PBG5, Dual Core, new form factor etc..) in the next few weeks.

Sure it could all just be pure coincedence, but seriously, if they hold off any longer, the PB's will be considered accient relics (very sexy accient relics though :p).

I've been waiting so long to get a PB, but i'm confident that by the end of February i will be the proud owner of the best laptop this planet has ever seen....sorry that was a bit dramatic.

Just my 5c, sorry, typo i meant 2c...lol

Okay. This is certainly nothing personal against anyone on any board in particular, but a person can only take so much. A form factor is not a case design. It is a layout configuration for machine internals. The PowerBook moving to a new form factor is analogous to the move from an AT to an ATX motherboard (and therefore case) or a change in design/interface of an integrated circuit (such as the shift from a 754-pin Athlon 64 to the newer 939-pin). If the PowerBook is redesigned, it will be in a new form or case, true, but not a form factor. Unless of course it switches to the G5 or a non-pin compatible CPU (i.e. new motherboard) at the same time, which is indeed a different form factor.

I had a fairly stressful day, and in five minutes I may not care anymore, but specificity in language would go a long way in avoiding misunderstandings. If you use technical terms, it's best to use the correct ones.

retailer info not that good

Hate to burst your bubble but I worked for an Apple retailer, and we got all our best info from the Rumor sites....

I still remember the one time our reginal rep threw caution to the wind, and told us what he knew... and we went off that... and he was wrong... way wrong...

So, from my experience at least... unless they got shipments of G5 boxes in already or marketing material, which is unlikely.... chances are that any inside info at the retailers is coming from the rumor sites...

Infact I did that same thing many of times... the under my breath... don't by now... but don't tell anyone I told you cause the boss is anxious to sell this last unit.... type of a thing.

Wow man you did have a ruff day....I hope it picks up... maybe a new G5 powerbook will do the trick...

That would do nicely. :)
I'd even be pleasantly suprised with a modest CPU update if it came with a 256MB VRAM option, a brighter screen, optical audio output, standard 5400rpm hard drive, and 512MB standard RAM. A special instant-on mode for iTunes and DVD playback (no OS X startup) could also be a huge selling point.

The G5 would be fantastic, of course, but the G4 mostly gets the job done. Better video hardware, displays, and optical audio would at least tie in the PB line with the "year of high definition."

... you constantly check the source for Apple's site for any mention of PowerBook G5s.

Yah know I was thinking the same thing. Who goes around looking at the source of Apple’s web pages. I mean its one thing if it was their front page but their PowerBook Page?

The one big diff though was that in the case of the PowerMac it was actually posted. Content that is. Not some random entry in a web page source. As for the others. I just don't know. We should get theregister to write a story. See if Apple changes it all.

After all this, all I can say is there happen to be a lot of G5 Powerbook Typos all of a sudden. Either somethings cookin' or someone in Apple has a sick sense of humor and wants to extract a little revenge.

What I meant is that now that everybody is actually looking at source codes and the small print on Apple web pages, a mistake is bound to come up. Just like if you look for PowerBook accesories on other web pages and find a product that mistakenly says it's for the PowerBook G5 showing of course the picture of our long lasting PowerBook G4.
But, I really do hope that these so-called typos are actually leaks. That would be great! Start lining up people! The G5's are almost here :D

What's funny is how many of the people that said that it was impossible for the G5 to be put in a laptop have finally been starting to believe that it is possible. Hope that by Feb 14 we could all tell you "I told you so".

Still waiting.....

There won't be nothing great about PBs in the near future

The One thing that make me think there isn't anything great coming soon is:
Dont you think if they were going to release the PowerBook G5 Steve Jobs would like to introduce it himself?
And as we all know, there isn't any great Apple Event coming in next months (until June). They could schedule an special event for sure, but if they haven't done it yet it means there won't be anything great about PBs in the next month...

One thing I'm sure about: In some days or weeks, a PB G4 1.67 GHz will be relesed, and general disappoinment will be monumental... as someone has said some posts ago, PBs are sexy... but very old.

Footnote  : They could be saved with a 7448 1.8 or 2 Ghz, that would be a really great machine, but I think (and have read in other rumors sites) the 7448 is not ready yet

Prices of PB down in HK

Just an info from Hong Kong. Prices of PBs are dropping massively. Today the 17" is down from 21,500 to 18,000 HKD. 15" in the same ratio. Only the 12" didn't drop, but some retailers give a free airport express with it. Anything like that anywhere else too?

So keep fingers crossed for a good upgrade of the PBs. G5 Carbon?

I work for the largest Apple reseller in Australia, over the past 2 weeks we have received memos regarding the immediate clearance of current model PB's. This also includes firesale units.

We are also unable to order current CTO models and stock units due to "constraint issues".

I have seen this before, as have many others. Apple has subtle ways of informing channel members of new models, as it is in Apples best interests to clear all models. The delay in announcement may be attributed to an oversupply of PBs in the channel, and Apples reluctance having to offer price protection.

Next Tuesday, im sure. ;)
