I think we may see those freescale (however it's called) chips for a while before G5 PB's in Paris! That would be awesome, planning to be there with my girl and that would impress her a lot! :)

My girl would roll her eyes at the thought of me getting another computer from Apple and neglecting her 25/7. I'd be like "take a walk up the tower love, I just gotta take this new G5 for a spin". "Meet you back at the hotel tomorrow morning, yeah?"

:D

A lot of people on these forums are going to get dumped unless we start slipping back into the real world. hahaha

The only option is to get your girlfriend into Macintosh (the computers; we're not talking about naughty dress-up here, though that's another thread ;) )

Before my girlfriend got her 15" AlBook, she was checking MacRumors for news of an update as obsessively as I was.

I'm not sure if she ever posted on here, but, maybe, just maybe one day....

forget powerbook, powermacs please

Since I am in the market for a new powermac and not a powerbook, I am much more interested to read based on nothing rumors about imminent powermac updates. Anybody noticed the shipping time for 2,5ghz powermacs has suddenly dropped to "same bussinesday". We all know what this means :)

well whatever happens i cant buy a PB now until march. there HAS to be something out then.

*ive just imported a DS :) i can make do with my PC laptop till something major happens, like a G5 or Tiger or something

its probably better for my stress/excitement levels this way :D see you all in a couple of months

Agreed. They don't have anymore PB's available at the Apple Store @ Lenox (Atlanta). And they were very helpful in telling me that they have no idea when new ones are coming in.

Ah, ya gotta cut them some slack. You know what Apple's like. Those retail guys find out about new stuff at exactly the same time as the rest of us....when the keynote starts!

I still use a 400mhz TiBook with 768mb of RAM, and am very happy with it. I run photoshop, dreamweaver, illustrator etc... Powerbook G4s are very nice machines. The G5 powerbook isn't as necessary as the PBG4 was at the time it was released. That said...

How do you do it???????? I mean most people here can't use all those apps on their new PowerBooks or are so worried that they can only do email and internet. Cool!

Because i'm new to all the update/speed bump apple frenzy,

say if they had announced the update today, when would it be avalible to order on UK sites and how long would the delivery be (based on past updates).

Having never ever used a mac before i'm dying to get my hands on one, i'm converted allready....let alone after i've edited and burned all my home movies on DVD.

Right then, I'd better go check google news , you never know....

here we start, there are plenty of people working with Pismos out there, G4 are not that necessary as Pismo was at the time it was released...

Couple possibilities in order of likeliness:

1. WWDC

2. Apple Expo in Paris

3. A separate press conference that pretty much could be held whenever.

If I were to bet money, I'd still expect a G4 speedbump right now, possibly based on the MPC7448, with a G5 to be announced at WWDC.

Considering that at least one person has reported his Powerbook order to have had the shipping moved to Feb. 14th, I expect that whatever is released will be announced Tuesday, to be shipping on February 14. Whether that's a G4 or a G5 is anybody's guess at this point.

How do you do it? I just finished modelling a BMW 5 series in Maya on my 500 mhz powerbook g3 with a broken screen and external Dell monitor and 8mb Ati graphics card  . In to months when I buy a new G5 powermac :D I'll do the finishing touches. Stop blaming it all on your computer!

Yah and how long did it take you to do that. Its not a matter whether or not the system can actually perform the task. (I'm pretty sure a 486 could run Photoshop CS.) Its about how fast it runs to keep you productive.

Why do you need a 64-bit laptop ??

jamilecrire said:
Except a 64 bit based laptop. I've been waiting on this one for a while.

Why do you think that you need a 64-bit laptop, considering that

  • There are few benefits to 64-bit if you have 4 GiB of RAM or less (and a laptop is unlikely to support more than 4 GiB for at least a couple of years)
  • Only programs that need more than 2 to 4 GiB of RAM will be rewritten for 64-bits
  • 64-bit programs wouldn't be any faster than 32-bit programs, and may often be slightly slower
  • Apple recommends that most programs should stay 32-bit
  • The lame 10.4 implementation of 64-bit support doesn't support Cocoa or Carbon apps - therefore only terminal apps can use 64-bits, not GUI apps

You might want a G5 laptop because it's *faster* than the current G4 laptops - but much of that is due to the faster memory system, not because the PPC970 is 64-bit. 10.3 isn't 64-bit, yet the PowerMac G5 is faster than the PowerMac G4.

(There obviously are some fringe cases where a 64-bit program might be helpful on a 512 MiB laptop, but I'm describing the overwhelming majority of applications here.)

I don't want a 64-bit G5...I was just worried that i was about to order a P4 only for a slightly better model - faster processer/better graphics card/bigger hardrive etc to arrive 2 weeks later for £100 quid less...That would of hurt.

Now i'm just waiting.......but not for G5

p.s dual G4 would be nice....No....don't be greedy...

Great Post. This is my first post and I'm looking at buying my frist Mac for law school this fall. I've been reading Mac forums for about 5 months, and think the PBs are due for some kind of update. I see them most likely being minor updates...but what do i know...I'm hoping there will be significant updates by this summer...

Yep, I have been thinking the same exact thing. When it dropped to 5-7 days I was thinking that IBM had finally gotten the supply issue solved with the 2.5 ghz. Now that it is down to "same day shipping" IBM must be having much success with getting those G5 chips up to a higher speed which signifies an update. :)

It is always very important that you plan time for your significant other. Downtime and rest is very important. Otherwise one won't be abel to be fully functional to enjoy the Mac.

If it is just a upgrade to the G4, it could occur at anytime. Another major update at WWDC would be quite a fast update timing.

It would be a short period, yes, but it's still four months. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a faster G4 Powerbook now and a G5 Powerbook at WWDC.

Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a G5 Powerbook next week, either. Nor would I be surprised if no G5 Powerbook arrived this year at all. There's plenty of circumstantial evidence to support any one of these scenarios.

Time planning : iCal
Downtime and rest: iPhoto & iTunes

One needs a mac! ;)

Significant other : iPod? J/K

Wdlove, we were dreaming of a G5 in Paris, that would be awesome, wouldn't? Tower? who cares? :)
