Still possible today?

Is it still possible that Apple will release an update today on the Powerbooks? It's getting later in the morning, which isn't looking good. This wait is getting annoying....

I am another in the category of having money in hand to buy a new 15" PB when it's released, but if it doesn't come soon, then Apple's going to lose a new customer.... What are they thinking?

I am in the exact same situation. The longer people have to wait the more dissapointed they will be with the minor updates.

You have to have an actual update first... though I agree that the longer we're made to wait, the more disappointed people will become. It is so discouraging.

Argh... curse the day I found this thread...
There is something to be said for being an uninformed consumer :)

At least you can sleep at night :)

I really want to pull the trigger on a Mac mini..

What are the thoughts of the people in this forum with regards to ordering a BTO mini off the online Applestore and actually getting the updated mini? My gut tells me I would most likely get one, but my fear is that I wouldn't and then I am stuck since it is BTO....

Your killing me Steve :)

Personally I would expect to get the updated Mini. If I was in the market for a mini I would go for it, considering that some customers received the updated Mini's over a week ago, almost two weeks.

Is there no return policy on BTO products from the Apple Store ?

Can anybody please direct me to a nearby I hate Steve site?

Well, after searching all ends of the web, this is the latest 'info' on updates. No mention in this speculation, I mean report on powerbooks however... http://www.macosxrumors.com/articles/2005/10/04/apple-to-announce-new-products-next-week/

We can only wait and hope. Some have also speculated that a release next week would coincide with the end of the UK Student Union offer (Oct 8 in the UK)... and if we can believe that report, a next-week update would also coincide with Apple's financial conference. Let's all dig out our four-leaf clovers and wish!

macosxrumors said that the new mac minis wouldn't be appearing until October when we were all waiting for them a couple of week sback.

I would be so pissed if the only announcement this month was the bumped Mac Mini's. I honestly might have to leave Apple after 13 years of loyalty.....

Same in Germany - the German-Student-Offer will also end at Oct 8.

Why Let PB, Mini & Other Future Updates Determine Your Present Decisions?

I agree with many of the thoughts on here, but disagree with some as well. I had to purchase a new PB last week. Now I would like to have waited for a new one, but the "what if" game was killing me. My determining factor was this; Does the machine give me performance and function today at the price I am willing to pay? The answer was yes. I could have waited, but I may have been sorely disappointed at the wait. I can always sell on ebay and lose $100 or so, and that is not a bad price to pay for having it now.

We have gotten spoiled as Mac enthusiasts. Windows user never sit in a room wondering when the next upgrade of Dell, HP, Gateway or other PC is coming out. They buy it, use it, and expect it to be outdated within a month or two. We should do the same. It is nice to speculate about future upgrades, but if you need to buy now, don't lament that it is not coming today when you need it.

That being said, I confess I have also looked at the Apple site 20 times wondering if they would upgrade the Powerbook. To no avail... I am glad I went out and bought it when I needed it. Otherwise I would have no way to share with you right now. I would be sitting at home, no internet, no communication to the online world, just wondering when, oh when, I would be buying my partially, slightly, upgraded Powerbook.

That low-power G5 would run at around 1.6GHz. And it's debatable that would it offer any improvement over the G4 at those speeds. G4 has a short pipeline, whereas G5 has a longer pipeline. G5 does less work at each clock-cycle, so 1.6Ghz G4 might actually be faster than 1.6Ghz G5 would be, even though G5 would have faster bus.

If Apple used 7448 with 200Mhz Bus and 1MB L2-cache, running at around 1.6Ghz, it would propably outperform 1.6Ghz G5 with a clear margin.

True it is rated for 1.6 but Apple has been getting 1.67 GHz out of chips rated for 1.42. I would bet they could over clock to 1.8 or 2.0 Ghz.

Plus the major bottleneck for the PB is the 167mhz FSB, this could be bumped to 1 Ghz for the G5, as well as DDR2, and PCI-E bus for faster gpu's. Not to mention better floating point performance and 64 bit capabilities for future applications.

It's the intangible benefits of the G5 that will improve the whole system not just the cpu bump.

Well I am trying to be a first time Mac buyer and this is not the same process that most PC vendors use. Dell, HP, and IBM heavily discount older hardware when newer hardware is available (and they don't try to keep minor updates a huge secret). In addition the updates are usually quite often. Aside from the recent minor Mac Mini update (not upgrade, they just made a few things standard that should have been in the first place) Apple is not having frequent updates, and as in the case of their other lines of PC's and the frustrations of many people in these forums.

I do hear you. At some point you buy the product because you will be happy with it, and you do not fret over "what might have been". In this instance with the mini's it is particularly frustrating becasue I KNOW there are updated mini's out there, and right now it is a crapshoot as to which mini I will get if I order one.. It would be much easier to wait if Apple either came out and said the expected release date, or reduced the price of their current mini line. Money plays a factor to me becasue I am buying the high-end mini with 1GB of RAM. With my corporate discount this still amounts to $800+ dollars. When the new mini is released for the same price, mine will most likely be worth about $600-650. Why? Because the updated mini will have a slightly faster processor, much faster hard drive, much more efficient superdrive, and double the video memory (as well as a bluetooth upgrade). That is not a $100 update in my mind...

The fact that the news was leaked on Cnet, and an Apple representative confirmed that some buyers were getting updated hardware is the frustrating part here. I would feel a ton better if I saved $100+ dollars on my purchase and could put that towards a faster external firewire hard drive. That would really help offset the pain I would feel if Apple announced the updated mini a few weeks later.... Sorry for the rant, I am just getting more and more frustrated with this situation... I guess I will wait another week, but that too is speculation...

Shard, I want the dual-layer capacity for two reasons: (1) to store home movies un-compressed that won't fit on a single-layer disc (have several as my son is now into learning movie-making) and (2) to archive a few DVDs that get watched a lot.

Makes sense. Thanks. :)

Well, certainty is so boring, i mean, i love the adrenaline and the excitement of a Powerbook update! Those nights waking up at 4 o'clock in the morning to check MacRumors, the despair of waking to the hard reality and always the small glimpses and hopes of a better and not-even-promised update... hehe

BTW, i don't know if it's been mentioned before, but as far as i recall, the sku's of the PB 15" were M9676LL/A and M9677LL/A, but on this page for Tiger, Apple has both the old ones and this other two: M9831LL/A and MA015LL/A, both with the same speed as the older sku's, could it mean upgrades without speed changes?

EDIT: Apple's "One more thing" event October 12th in San Jose, California perhaps it's significant, although with those theatre curtains, it's evident it will be about the boring iPod Video, not anything to do with powerbooks...

powerbook ship times in the US

As of 7:25 PM - Has anybody else noticed that the ship times for the 15" and 17" powerbooks are now 1-2 days for the standard options?

Yes, it just means that you will have to wait an extra day for your slow ass old powerbook while steve snickers at those of us who still love the pbooks.

(PS: not hating, I just have a 15" 1.25GHz 1GB RAM pbook that's just in sore need of being upgraded)

I hope I am completely wrong in my doubts of a new powerbook any time soon.

Since the 12th is Wednesday, how about this scenario: Apple updates something in the Power____ line (PowerMac or PowerBook) on Tuesday, then unveils the "new" iPod Video on Wednesday as "one more thing"???

15" and 17" PowerBooks are now listed as 1-2 business days, without any BTO options. 15" combo and 17" units jump to 1-3 business days with a single BTO option, while the 15" SD jumps to 2-3 weeks with a single BTO option. Looks like stock is starting to run down on these units... maybe (please!) signalling an upcoming update?

Widescreen everything at the special event?

I am thinking the whole red drapes display for the Oct. 12 event is definitely a 'movie' theme. But I don't think it is for an iPod video. It's more likely Apples entirel product line is shifting to widescreen monitors. 13" (or 14" ?) widescreens are supposed to go into full production over the next few months. PB's and iBooks shipping times have both increased to 1-3 days or whatever. If the iBooks go widescreen it would definitely be an appropriate use of a special event; consumer low end models in widescreen is a big deal.

p.s. the eMac may get left in the pasture.

Oh...my....god.....
We are all soooooo pathetic!

Let's try saying this together, shall we?:

"God, grant us the serenity, to accept the updates we cannot change, the courage to change to the companies that update, and the wisdom to know the difference..."

This forum has GOT to be worse than CRACK!!! (I'm sure crack's more enjoyable!)
