I hope Apple wouldn't be too short-sighted to think we're all overjoyed with their plans to go MacIntel... and I can't imagine them thinking of waiting for the next PowerBook to be MacIntel. The proverbial writing is on the wall... there is a large segment of their loyal customers (us) who would prefer a last-generation PowerBook rather than a first-gen MacIntel. I've been waiting several months, am hoping they release something soon.

Very true. Furthermore, in the case of myself, I will probably get the first generation Intel Powerbook, but I want to get the last generation PowerPC, for the time being. Please Apple...

I ask you oh gods of Apple, "why not release a G5 PB?" IBM now has low power version of the G5 ready.

That low-power G5 would run at around 1.6GHz. And it's debatable that would it offer any improvement over the G4 at those speeds. G4 has a short pipeline, whereas G5 has a longer pipeline. G5 does less work at each clock-cycle, so 1.6Ghz G4 might actually be faster than 1.6Ghz G5 would be, even though G5 would have faster bus.

If Apple used 7448 with 200Mhz Bus and 1MB L2-cache, running at around 1.6Ghz, it would propably outperform 1.6Ghz G5 with a clear margin.

This is what gets me. There are a lot of users like you (myself included). We are ready to buy the next PPC PowerBook because we don't want a MacTel laptop until 2-3 years down the road. Primarily because we just suffered through the last transition from OS9 to OSX and we don't want to lay out more cash for Intel native apps, most of which won't be available for a couple of years anyway.

I feel the same way the two of you do, preferring a last generation PPC PowerBook than a 1st or 2nd gen Intel CPU PB. A last gen PPC PB would be more than a viable machine for 2-3years, especially since it'll take software developers that long to fully port any pro software over to the new platform.

Hopefully my 10 month wait will be worth it.

It is 6:44 TUESDAY morning and the Apple store still shows 24 hour shipping for the powerbooks, and 1-3 days for BTO. :( Hopefully it is just early in California, and there will be some signs on the website EARLY today of NEW powerbooks.

I AGREE. I just checked teh website and found no changes. However, when they made the changes on the mini and iBooks this summer, they updated the website around 8:30-9am. So I am like you... Hoping and crossing my legs and fingers that they make a change today so I can go tell the Apple Store manager "I told you so!" Now take back this PB and give me a new one! (just bought new one last Friday)

It's too early, wait a little while. Normally updates come in around 9am Cupertino time.

In Denmark the 12" PB Superdrive has changed to 3 days shipping time :)
All others still have a 24 hour shipping time though

Please Please Please let the upgrade come soon. Can't stand this waiting.

At this point i believe updates will come after the October 11th conference, Apple doesn't want to get the bad publicity of all those angry customers who would show up protesting the less-than-espectacular upgrades.

Even worst, Apple could have been trying to keep the inventory stock down for the end of their financial quarter and that's the reason for the 2-3 week wait for some models of PB, if this is the reason, the expected time should go back to 24hrs within the next week, and if THAT happens, i don't think we´ll get updates until mid-november, if at all...

9:00 already in Cupertino, right? and nothing to show for it... :(

And why do you need a dual-layer drive in the first place? Honest question, just curious. :) Is it just the extra capacity for data? Do you make your own home movies which you would like on dual layer as opposed to being compressed onto single layer?

Shard, I want the dual-layer capacity for two reasons: (1) to store home movies un-compressed that won't fit on a single-layer disc (have several as my son is now into learning movie-making) and (2) to archive a few DVDs that get watched a lot.

Not that it matters, but since CA is Pacific time, I'd think it's only 8:15am right now. It's 11:15am (EDT) here.

Highly doubtful. A G5 PowerBook would require a substantial engineering remake of the PowerBook, something which is unlikely given that Apple has known for quite some time that they were going to transition to MacTel. At this point, only the Freescale 7448 is fair-game since it's pin-for-pin compatible with the existing 7447A. I agree that a G5 PB would be nice, but very unlikely.

Agreed. 8:30am out here on the west coast and nothing from apple. I really hope that we see an update in 30min. At this point I will purchase even with a minor bump.

Updates come earlier than this.

We aren't going to see an update this week. The ship times, for most Powerbooks, are still 24 hours.

Agreed, but most people aren't taking into consideration that the 7448 will have a faster FSB, larger L2 cache, and most likely faster memory, all of which will result in a larger performance bump. Anyways, let's hope Apple reveals something later this morning when they "officially" open.

Apple Certified Refurbished PowerBook G4 12-inch

Apple Certified Refurbished PowerBook G4 12-inch 1.33 on Apple's referb page is $1299. (1-2 day ship) I could have sworn I saw that for $1099 (4-5 day ship) last night after midnight. THINKING IMPENDING UPGRADES... Was I drunk or dreaming?

Changes are definitely mean something. Not too sure but in my mind I would think that a price increase with a refurb might indicate that there is no upgrades ? Wouldn't Apple drop the price if they were going to release new models making the 1.33 Ghz an even older REV ?

I could definitely be wrong.

Drunk.

Its hard to believe that they would update Powerbooks and PowerMacs today when they still haven't announced the Mac Mini updates on their site.

Maybe the Apple Web guy is on Vacation ?

I heard 2.0Ghz PB's are shipping :D
