No, there really isn't. I fully expect the line to go all dual layer DVD burning.

Am I in the minority when I say that I'm not really that excited about getting a dual-layer burner? It just doesn't seem to be that big a deal to me. I really have little need to burn dual-layer discs, so perhaps pro users would have a differing opinion from me, but I just don't see it as anything to get excited about, especially with blank media still costing a fair bit (albeit coming down in price, I realize).

For me, moving from a CD burner to a DVD burner was huge. The next big move I'm looking forward to is to Blu Ray, but this whole dual-layer thing seems like it's going to be a minor little "augmentation" to the technology that won't really go too far, especially since the next generation technology is relatively around the corner. Just some thoughts...

Make that 5, plus i could convince a 6th and 7th if the updates are good.
And mark 1 down for a new dual core powermac.

Add one more (new) PowerBook... I've been waiting for two months!

Man, all these sales are starting to rack up - come on Apple, what on Earth could you be waiting for? :p ;)

JRM, whereabouts in the Outback are ya? I backpacked through a lot of it a few years ago, and would be curious to know if I was near you - although it is such a large area! ;) I started in Darwin, went down through Katherine, Tennant Creek (Devil's Marbles and all that), Alice Springs, Ayers Rock/Kata Tjuta, down through Coober Petty and the opal mines, I went through Dingo, hmm, let me think, where else...

A dual-layer burner is one of the reasons that I've been holding off on ordering a PowerBook. It's not the most important reason, but I don't want to have/carry an external dual-layer burner around when I could have it internal.

when i bought my 15" powerbook back in march, i bought the combo drive model because of the fact that the superdrive was not dual layer.

Did you go to Lightning Ridge? Coz that's where I usually am, I'm in Melbourne at the moment (the most liveable city in the world). I love my brilliant Melbourne, but when i feel like going for dig on my opal claim i'm off to the ridge. Try getting broadband out there, try getting anything. If Lightning Ridge had an Apple store they would still be selling the 400mhz TiBooks.

But it's good to hear that you visited our great land (plenty of it) But it would be even better to hear some new machines tomorrow, i'm after a 15" or a new PowerMac, depending

And why do you need a dual-layer drive in the first place? Honest question, just curious. :) Is it just the extra capacity for data? Do you make your own home movies which you would like on dual layer as opposed to being compressed onto single layer?

And one more....

I was planning to hit the "buy"-button today, but you all made me kinda conserned.¨

I was thinking - could it be that they're doing something about the standard 256Mb chip? An upgrade to 768 Mb is kinda lame - and 1,2 Gb is kinda expensive... A standard 512 Mb would make an interesting upgrade to 1 Gb...

Honest question: Buy 12" PowerBook SD today - or wait one week?

wait unless you absolutely need it for a very critical matter.

It seems feasible that you'll only hae to wait till tomorrow. so wait imo

There will be NO upgrades tomorrow so it’s pointless even going on about it! I would be happy if there was though, because I need a new computer quick!

We'll have some announcements mid to late October, then will have to wait 6 weeks to get the machine anyway if its a Build To Order in the UK. Realistically, I'm looking at mid November until I get my new machine so I'll have to make do with my dual 867 until then.

Sure, dual layer DVD burning is not some huge barrier that I'm drooling over, but I still want it. I have a lot of DVDs I make, so if dual layer media comes down I can fit more stuff on a DVD, which will save me space. Furthermore, as prices come down, we'll be able to backup twice the data on a single disk.

In the meantime, I could use it, for special projects, where I needed more than the single layer DVD. It isn't some big, extraordinarily exciting thing, but it is good to have.

"The current hardware lineup will comprise our holiday offering for the remainder of the year."

Hence, no new updates until '06. (deja vu, ain't it?)

What is the source for that quote? You're spiking a lot of tires around here... :(

Yeah, makes sense. Like you say, it's not a big deal, but a nice-to-have.

When is Blu Ray going to hit anyway? Guess I'll find out more at CES 2006 in January...

I'm yet another powerbook buyer in waiting. I've been holding out with my (now damaged) 667 MHz TiBook for several months. If I'd had the money, I would've upgraded last year, but by the time I could afford a new machine, I figured it'd been 6 months since they were upgraded, so I held off. Who could've predicted it would be so long before the next upgrade?!?

I obviously should've bought 6 months ago, but I'll be damned if I'm going to buy anything before they're upgraded now!

I don't know what I'll do if the next powerbook is a Rev A MacIntel. I really want the ultimate PPC PowerBook.

Release the PowerBooks!!!

You have northing to worry about. I am willing to bet money that the next PowerBook will not be an Intel machine.

Any takers?

I hope Apple wouldn't be too short-sighted to think we're all overjoyed with their plans to go MacIntel... and I can't imagine them thinking of waiting for the next PowerBook to be MacIntel. The proverbial writing is on the wall... there is a large segment of their loyal customers (us) who would prefer a last-generation PowerBook rather than a first-gen MacIntel. I've been waiting several months, am hoping they release something soon.

This is what gets me. There are a lot of users like you (myself included). We are ready to buy the next PPC PowerBook because we don't want a MacTel laptop until 2-3 years down the road. Primarily because we just suffered through the last transition from OS9 to OSX and we don't want to lay out more cash for Intel native apps, most of which won't be available for a couple of years anyway.

I ask you oh gods of Apple, "why not release a G5 PB?" IBM now has low power version of the G5 ready. The new G5 could be accompanied by a high speed FSB, and a PCI-E GPU chipset, as well as HD, hi-res screens. Apple could close the PPC PB line with a bang. Sales would go through the roof, just think about it, the new Apple G5 PowerBook, sleek, powerful, and elegant. They would easily be able to make and sell this laptops for 18-24 months.

Then Apple could release a new Intel portable line in the fall of 2006 using Intel Merom chipset. The two lines of computers could overlap for a period of time with Apple selling both versions. :D
