FreeScale are the same set of people that were Motorola's CPU division. FreeScale was spun out of Motorola to continue making PowerPC chips. It's just a different name for the same idiots...

People at Freescale are not idiots nor morons. They produce chips they can sale. Apple is just a small customer (3 percent of the product line) in PowerPC and it is not worthwhile to invest a lot of money for a small customer. By the way both the 8641 and 8641D are available to so called alpha customers (Apple is one of them) and even development systems for those are available. The computational performance of the 8641 is much superior to any Intel processor, plus its power consumption is much lower at a frontside bus speed of 533 MHz. Just check Freescale's web site. Therefore a new Powerbook using a 8641 would be overwhelming fast. Hope that Apple introduces such laptop.

the apple store is down for me with the stickie saying "we'll be back soon." Anyone else getting this, what might it be?? Just wondering and getting a little excited to see it, hope its not down for much longer - and hope there's a mystery suprise (ala mighty mouse style) when it comes back up! By the way its 12:06 PST on the west coast of the USA for me. And the store has been down for at least 5 minutes...

As I said some posts ago, we're gonna see major dual-core updates for the PMs, small bumps to PB G4s, color screens in iPod Minis and higher-capacity Shuffles, and finally (I don't think so) updates to the Mac Mini:

I call BS on this rumor:

G5 Mac Minis based on a new IBM low-power processor

Something is coming in January. We don't know what but something x86 based. I would stake my life on it. The first products won't be high end ones with the exception of the PowerBooks because they are in such dire need of an update.
But lets forget the high-end stuff for a second. The non pro-consumer grade hardware will be the first to move over. Why? Simple. The average Mac Mini Windows switcher is using the mini for the basics. Which means a good % of the people buying a mini aren't going to be looking for high end apps to run on it. High end apps that prob won't be converted yet. So I'm calling BS on at least that aspect to that rumor. The very first products to move to x86 will be the Mac Mini, eMac (If they don't just discontinue it altogether), and the PowerBook. Those in some fashion or another will make an appearance 1H of 2006. If I believe in nothing else I believe in that.

P.S. Of course I'd be MORE excited to see this on a tuesday since that is when most updates occur, but a monday would work too - just highly doubt it... especially at this time of day... Probably just routine maintenence but I thought I'd get a little anxious anyways.

Prob regular maintenance. Don’t get too excited. Apple brings their site down from time to time to do work. Usually it isn't in the middle of the day though. But it is a Monday so........hmmm

[Edit: Its up for me.]

Exactly...that's why I call that part of the rumor also BS...the Minis will NOT be updated.

The reason is simple...the last models in line to receive Intel processors will be the ONLY ones getting a last PPC update, as Apple needs desperately to keep demand flowing; and this mainly comprises the PMs and PBs G4...the PMs will get a dual-core 970MP, and the PBs just some more speed bumps, since Freescale can't really help Apple.

Thus, the first models receiving Intels (Mac Minis, iMacs, PBs and then PMs) will get their long-awaited refresh by mid-2006.

Dont waste your money!

One major reason Apple is going to Intel is to drop prices and be competitive. If you still want to own an Apple for some reason after the switch, wait to buy a Macintel. Personally, I know that Apple is done. Now they might as well be called Dell. It's all over. They lied to us all.

Hmmm, an iMac and an iBook are both PC's. How do you figure you do not have any pc's? PC = Personal computer. This has always been an issue for me. Especially since my first PC was an Apple II in 1978.

I bet this is true! maybe.

I'll bet this is true maybe  , this is the way Apple did at Expo Paris in September 2003, when I bought my Powerbook. But they also hadn't update the Pbooks since the aluminum ones came out at Macworld San Francisco back in January of that year.

However, I'm not buying 'cause I still have a year on my Applecare.

I would like to see another update to the iMac line before Apple goes Intel though.

And what's up with OS 10.5 "Leopard", that Steve was talking about at WWDC this year. Tiger just came out, I can't believe that Apple is going to release a new version so soon. I mean it was like 2 years in between the Panther and Tiger releases  . Maybe their going true 64-bit.

It's pretty clear that they were lying about the "PowerPC Rules - look at these 'benchmarks'"....

The single processor P4 MacIntels are "kicking the snot out of dual 2.7 G5s" according to some reports on the web.

But, you expect lies in adverts, right?

I'd like to look at those benchmarks, do you remember any of the links?

Apple is done huh? Whatever troll. Apple putting out computers that don't take weeks to assemble and can meet demand on launch, never again having to worry about the idiot chip manufacture not being able to meet demand by Apple. Oh no. They are so screwed.

Well, if we're going to get picky, then what has always been an issue for me is when a person says PC's (possessive) instead of PCs (plural). A PC's what? :p

Sorry, I had the quote wrong - it's "beat the snot out of the dual 2.7", not "kick the snot"....

Sorry, which link in that post showed evidence that the Macintel "beat the snot of of the dual 2.7"? I checked them all and failed to find any such quote. In fact, the final link in that post showed that xBench scores were only about 1/3 the speed on a Macintel as they were on a dual 2.7.

I have a weird feeling about these mactels....this switch can either make Mac rise or fall...time will only tell...

Good point, ~Shard~. It seems odd but, in fact, it is a correct form. When abbreviations are made into a plural form, we often do so by using an apostrophe. Example: ~Shard~ got six A's on his report card.

<edit> Back on topic, I don't think the intel chips will necessarily go into the low-end computers first. Rather, I think they'll go in the products that need them most. As far as I'm concerned, the Powerbook is in dire need.

So for a while Apple is going to sell iBooks that are cheaper than PowerBooks and that blow them away speed-wise? And iMacs that are cheaper than powermacs but twice as fast? I don't see that happening. They'll convert the high-end stuff to Intel first, not the low end, though I'll admit that the Mac Mini could be an exception to that rule, as it would bring in switchers.

That may be true for the iBook and PowerBook situation, but the PowerMacs are still as fast as other dual processing unit systems out there.
