While it probably would be nice if the Mac was a better gaming machine, it doesn't concern me in the slightest. I need desktop publishing and video performance. It's the combination of OS, software and hardware that makes the difference to me.

That's why it would be nice if Apple would announce new displays soon -- as well as updates to some of their pro line applications (minor updates to enhance the capabilities of the new machines would be fine).

*** *** *** *** *** *** ***

I expect we will hear that 10.3.3 is ready for download some time next week -- then expect a hardware announcement on the 30th (with a 10% probability for the 23rd). I think my track record is pretty good, so far. Of course, if there is no announcement at all in March then I will give up predictions at together!

Other than asthetics, I still don't see why Apple should release a new line of displays. The current ones are well made and look better than most anything else out there. Lower the prices if anything!!

the technology in them is as old as the monitors are. it'd be nice if they could just make them current in that regard. asthetics schmethics. they still do the job

The displays will be updated. The displays have been around too long not to update -- even if it means only minor updates. For instance, they have two USB ports, no firewire. Are the USB ports even 2.0? (I'm not sure, I don't own one.)

I think they look fine, though they match the G4 better than the G5.

EDIT: fenlyn beat me by two minutes!

Unique processor. Unique chipset. Unique architecture. Custom video cards with custom firmware. Custom bluetooth and airport. Standard hard drives and RAM. Standard interfaces. Best of both worlds.

It doesn't make sense to redesign memory and hard drives as these are commodity items. However, you cannot make the mobo/cpu a commodity item in Macs because that crushes the whole point of Mac architecture...
the video cards at least the good ones are made by Ati. only reason they are custom is ADC is forced on you. so the cards need ADC to hook to the Apple ADC monitor. other then that the same stuff with less choice. no all in wonders, no 9600xt or 9800xt. pay more get less. Unique CPU doesnt mean squat. G4 was Unique and was Powermacs main problem. 2 G4s getting spanked by 1 Intel. your argument is flawed. so Apple has its OS, Its Mobo that holds CPUs of less muscle and more cost. Apple has 1 thing and thats the OS. everything else is subpar to the PC world. and we wait another month.

i'm getting so tired of these pc vs mac discussions..
in the end it's just up to you, and see which platform you feel most comfortable working with..

goddamn, if everybody would have the same taste or opinions..pff, the world would be boring.. so if someone likes pc's better, go ahead, and vice versa.. don't go trying to persuade eachother, stick with the platform you want.. and don't get upset if someone else doesn't feel the same way..

so stop bitching already.. (sorry for the language :p )

Iam not so sure Ill be getting a Mac, still researching this. I have looked into Alienware's Aurora and have seen a lot of reviews and from what I have read it is faster in almost everything vs a dual 2.0 G5. With Apple its allways will i have the power to run whats coming out because of such poor cpu's in the machines. Going with a AMD 64 3400 means not only will it cost me less but i will be able to buy stuff for it right here in yahooville S.C since Apple has not one store in the state. It will also give me speed and the abilty to get the latest programs without playing Apples hurry up and wait game. Also will give a choice of colors( remember Imac crt) and all kinds of options you dont get with Mac. and its made in Florida USA not some 3rd world country. I will say its looking better and better except for 1 thing. Windows XP which i have never messed with.

Think what you will, both chips are 64bit and have a bright future. If you care about usability and sleekness, you will go mac. If you care about gaming go alienware.

You make a point to a certain extent. Each platform has its own pros anc cons, and when it really comes down to it it's just apples and oranges. You gotta base yer decision on what you need and want. That's all there is to it. There's no sense in arguing over the details, because one platform will win out in one category and the other platform in another...and even then it's still mildy subjective. If you like PC go PC. I wouldnt buy alienware...because you can build your own for a lot less money and get the same calibur of system minus the branding (the individual componets have their own warranties, and a lot of companies provide a lifetime warranty on their products, so just make sure which ones those are when you go to piece together your machine). If i was in the market for a gaming system i'd go PC without hesistation. I'm in the market for a professional system though. Yeah, PC's can do it just as well now a days, but that's not all that matters. Apple has had a foothold in the professional world since its conception, so that weighs into it. You have to cator to the market that you're enterting if you want to be successful. The compatability between the two has gotten better over the years, which is more then welcome, but mac still has the professional market covered (ESP creativity related work). If you're not using it as a professional system. Go PC. You might run into more bumps in the road down the way, but you get what you pay for. I still don't regret buying my PC. I got a lot of use out of it, and i'll get more.

Watch the Skies!

The Bright and Shining Center of my Universe just picked up one of these Alienware boxes, and it's slick. I'll give them full points for design, and for matching components to create a truly impressive gamer's platform. If you are a gamer, by all means buy an Alienware box. If you're a GEEK gamer, build the thing yourself - go wild!

Me, I've built many AMD boxen. I've got a pretty decent one sitting here with a gig of RAM and over a terabyte of disk and all the bells and whistles (and fans). Inside the box, a place with which I'm intimately familiar, is a rat's nest of wires and cables. I try to tame them with ties and velcro before closing up the box, but I'm convinced they untie and intertwine themselves once the lights are out.

The thing that sold me first on the Dual G5 was how flippin' BEAUTIFUL it is under the hood. No tangled wires. No dangling cables. Just clear, clean, organized order, like a carefully raked Japanese contemplation garden.

I'm looking forward to meditating in my new G5 garden in a couple of weeks...

Im a long time Mac user so I am going to give them another month or two and see what they do. I appreciate the comments. It would be very easy for me if tomorrow they just released say a 2.0 G5 Imac but history shows they are very stingy with hardware so i expect another G4 bumped machine (1.4) and say a 1.6 G5 Imac. Powermacs are tougher but a dual 2.0 on the bottom and i would bite. Ill just keep waiting like lots of others. we are almost halfway through march. what happen to that neat gekko???

Who's your audience? I don't think anyone here gives a toss!

What I'd really love to see is an almost borderless screen. I have two Philips 170S4's which sit neatly side by side for a very effective "double width" screen which is ideal for working with Logic Pro - my main app - and of course very convenient for many other uses. I'd love to have the option of using Apple monitors especially with firewire and USB hubs...but there's just too big a gap between the screens. Actually there's slightly too big a gap between the one's I have, but they work pretty well and both together cost as much as one apple screen.

Putting screen together like this is becoming increasingly common and I could easily make use of a third if my wallet would stand it... something Apple should think about for those of us who can't afford the really huge single screens.

If you don't think anyone cares about getting what they pay for, then that's sad.

Just Hurt Me is frustrated with Apple and just wants to shake things up. He makes a valid point when asking for the best components when paying top dollar. However in the defense of other's, as yourself, some are quite happy paying for what they are currently getting from Apple.

Do we have a choice? No, not if we're going to stick with Apple and OS X, which hopefully most of us will. Would we like a choice? I'm certain there's a contingency here that would love a choice (e.g. Don't Hurt Me). However, that choice seems to be hardware. I think we can all agree that OS X is the best OS. However, some people are hardware aficionados and would love Apple to have more choice and better price points for certain machines. It would be nice, but not entirely plausible.

If we don’t gripe about what we really want, then we surely wont get it. Make some noise and maybe they’ll listen. For those that are content, great!

Just Hurt Me Baby… C’mon you can do it.. Ohhhhh that’s what daddy likes. C’mon oh yeah. Happy Friday Jackasses.

Cheapnis, how do you find the quality of image on those Philips 170S4's in comparison to the apple displays?

I'm sure it's probably for something stupid, why would they introduce something on a sat evening.....or maybe they are preparing for the 23rd?...

It must be a major update to the store though! They only do this when there's something new!
