I really do not think Powerbooks will get updated anytime soon. I may be wrong, but if they have delays on Xserves and Powermacs- how can they do Powerbooks this early?
G4 Powerbooks maybe- not G5.

I want G4 PowerBook updates, not G5. Even if it's a very minimal update.
I want to buy a 15" PowerBook, but I seriously dont want a model that is already 170+ days old.

Frankly, I'm glad that they will have (if they come out) such a low amount of memory. Apple gouges consumers on memory. Take a look at the apple store. To upgrade to the full 8GB of memory on a PMG5 costs more than the computer itself (US$4,950)! Why not just head over to www.coastmemory.com and get the same 8GB of memory for US$2,152? That's less than HALF the price! For the same freakin' memory!
Man, your not kidding, apples prices on memory make me think there a memory crisis or something... That is crazy......

Why don't you want a g5? You prefer old hardware? Or are you simply afraid of advancing technology, ted kaczynski?

Just kidding, but seriously why wouldn't you want the g5, simply because of possible bugs/problems in first gen models? I really just want the most advanced technology and the most future-proof (in terms of requisite specifications for apps), and I also think it would be great to get a chip that allows longer battery life than ever before in pbooks, and a newly designed case, too . . . oh, I am drooling simply at the prospect. . . .

Please let G5 POWERBOOKS come soon!!

Give us a New PB, Apple! Release a G5. Update the G4. What? Just DO SOMETHING!!!

Huezo, your response to neonart is well reasoned and shows a mature grasp of the situation. You is the Man!
According to Steven Jobs and Apple's statistics:
1. People in the "know" are moving more and more towards mobile computers (laptops)
2. The hottest, the best, the unquestionable leader of the mobile computer universe is the 15" PowerBook :D;
neither too small (12") nor too large (17") :)
nor PC heavy :( nor PC ugly , nor....
PowerBook is perfect in just about every way! ;)

You are right, Huezo, the current PowerBook @ 170 days is rapidly reaching the end of its model "newness" cycle. Any of its virginity left on the 180th day is automatically obsolesced within the hallowed 6 month cyber cycle of the Sacred brand of Apple, PowerBook Macintosh be its name.

The only way to regenerate faith in Go4 Almighty is for there to be a rebirth in the image and likeness of the almighty G4, but improved and haloed even if it is in a "minimal" way. For minimalism, practicality & simplicity of design is the way of the MacLamb from 1984 B.C. until today.

Should we give up our wildest dreams? Nay!
Should we stop brushing after every MacMeal? Nay! Brother.
Should we stop believing in the Book of Books, computer of computer, the recreation of mobile cyber iLife itself? Hey, Nay!, I say...and again I say Nay!
The "expected one", the G5 PowerBook of books is on its way,
though I know not the hour, the week, the month nor the day.
Its image and likeliness may still be in Father Jobs' womb
(or, the left side of his brain???), deep in R&D, or
merely in trials & tribulations.
Who knows? Who knew?
Who cares? We do!

There is plenty of time for anticipation of the Messiah, the Expected One.
But, the Halleluiah Chorus is getting a little antsy pantsy
waiting in the choir loft of the San Francisco Apple Store Cathedral
for the much heralded, much anticipated arrival of the PowerBook G5.

So, give your servants Huezo and me a sign, oh lard Steven.
Show us the way...an improved G4 today, oKay?
but a G5 tomorrow...someday soon!

So they're downgrading the RAM and HD in the dual 1.8? Interesting. At least the whole line is dual processors. Should have been that way all along. I hope these machine fit into the same price structure that the current line-up does.

Thats what happens sometimes. I seen people back in the G4 days buy the high end Dual 1 GHz G4 PowerMac and the next day the Dual 1 GHz was now the low end machine. So they paid $3,000 yesterday, when they could of paid $1500 for almost the same thing today. Happens all the time when Apple does their updates with all of their machines.

Note: The Dual 1 GHz PowerMac thing was just an example of me trying to get my point across.

Replacing the optical drive in most Apple towers is a piece of provebial cake! (Unless you can't use a screwdriver.)
Btw, I just got an ad from OfficeMAx where they advertized a 4X dvd burner for something like $80 after rebate!

A search on Newegg for 4X Pioneer DVD burners comes up with listings as little as $84 shipped. Even if the new G5's have 8X burners, I think the $116 in savings is worth the sacrifice in speed.

You need to know if you want to use iDVD you need the original Apple superdrive, because iDVD comes with build-in drivers and they need an original Apple superdrive. I am not sure what they use exactly but I think its a pioneer. The important thing is that you need EXACTLY the same drive which can be bought btw.

Cheers

Yeah Apple uses the Pioneer SuperDrive AND also they use the Sony SuperDrive such as the 4x SuperDrive in my iMac. The model # of the Sony Drive is DW-U10A, and I think the model # of the Pioneer Drive is something like A06 or maybe A07.

There is a way to use a non-Apple SuperDrive with iDVD, Disc Burn, iTunes, etc... You have to look on www.xlr8yourmac.com and there should be a tutorial on how to do it.

Perfect timing

1. I totally agree, all Macs should have dual CPU chips - OS X seems to thrive on it. SERIOUSLY!
2. I'd like to see dual G4 PowerBooks, if the G5 takes much longer to launch.
3. I'd like to see QUAD PowerMacs beginning with the new smaller 2.0GHz (and Apple should provide a "light show" option so owners can light it up at night to show off for friends, maybe tie it to iTunes display :D

The PowerMac I have now is the result of the OPPOSITE happening to me:

Do you remember Valentine's Day 2002, I do because it was the day I returned home from a cruise out of the USA (Viva la Riviera de México) to find that dual 800's were no longer King of the Hill, so at their new excitingly LOW price (dropped between $500 to $1000 overnight :) yes)!
Making sure I had more than enough on deposit, I ordered a Dual 800 through "David" @ MacMall using my bank card.

Although my good buddy "David" had assured me that MY 800 was "in stock", there was a slight hitch. I forgot about the self-imposed $3,000 spending limit on my card, and by the time I got a hold of my bank to rectify the situation...the warehouse was sadly empty. :( MacMall checked, and Uncle Steve was not making anymore 800s. I cried, I whined, and I pleaded for some sort of satisfaction.
(Had to play the Drama Queen since it was my problem and not really theirs).
"Oh, why didn't you at least put mine aside and not sell it to someone else (Sob, sob, sob...)?" I cried out in obvious (to me) pain, "who knows what kind of family MY 800 has been sent to." More sobbing...
[The abbreviation S O B was exactly what they were probably thinking of me at the time.]

Well, MacMALL and my "sales representative" being the righteous dudes they are, made me a deal I could not refuse (hell no, never happen, this is the best) on a brand, spanking NEW dual 1GHz PowerMac.
The moment I knew my new baby would be mine, picture this - the previously angry dark clouds parted, the SUN shown its glorious light not upon me, but upon my brand, new, gleeming Quicksilver miracle of life! and I heard a multitude of heavely angels singing the Halleluiah Chorus sweeter than any choir I had ever heard! YES, indeed.
So, I quickly ordered a new Kensington Expert Mouse (USB trackball type), and a 19" IBM monitor, and all of a sudden I swear I could hear the sweet triumphant strains of
Beethoven's J o y ! envelop me.

This time, as an early adopter, everything came out smelling like Roses, and spring Lilies.

In reading the discussions, it looks like I should wait to buy a Powerbook - I want the 17" but maybe a G5 in April timeframe? What say you folks? Tx.

I got the 107D, which is the OEM version, a couple weeks ago from NewEgg.com for $160 and free shipping. The OEM version doesn't have the bundled software with it, which I wasn't interested in. It's been a very good drive, so far.

FYI, there's a recent firmware update for this drive (v1.10) available on the Pioneer Web site.

Actually I think it could be anytime up until the June/July Apple Developers conference. If they ahven't annoucned by after that then likely its proving to be a problem child. Also by then they should have revamp most of the lines giving us a better idea of how they are going.

Are you aware of the $30 mail-in rebate that takes the retail price down to $170 for most of the rest of us, but mine was an "open-box" so Fry's sold it for $189 (therefore, $159.99 net). You still bested me, I paid tax for the privilege of "instant gratification" in a Take Home bag.
Check here for $30 Pioneer mail-in rebate coupon!!
http://www.videoguys.com/pioneer.html

Note: coupon (and I talked to Pioneer rebate) does NOT limit purchase to specific retailers - it's just that only those retailers really know about rebate since the Coupon is NOT published on Pioneer's site. Try it.

Thanks for the heads up on Firmware update,
but it does not appear to include Mac, only PC.

Regardless, thank you, daveL

Sorry, I didn't mention I had to put it in my wife's XP machine. My Mac is a laptop. So the firmware update, which is, as you said, for PC only, wasn't an issue for me. I've never tried doing something like that from VPC. It might work, but then again... You could put it in a friend's PC and update it, I suppose.

Anyway, thanks for the rebate tip. I'll look into it, but I have a feeling it doesn't apply to the OEM version.

2GB standard? yeah, if you buy 4 of them.

That's what I'm doing, being patient. Not going to allow myself to be disappointed. Looking now to WWDC June 28th. I've already filed my 2003 taxes, getting a refund from my state & IRS. Have some other additional funds to get my new Power Mac G5 hopefully a 3.0.

I'm still wondering the definition is of a Quad Power Mac?

dual=2 processors
quad=4 processors

A true
Quadra

would have
4 CPU chips,
double a dual !!!!

Just think what Virginia Tech could have done with 1,100 G5 Quadras (4,400 CPUs),
besides be Número Uno en el Mundo.
Now that would have caused a real melt down... :D of "China Syndrome" proportions.

I mainly just want a 128MB Video Card in the 15" PowerBook. The current 64MB Card seems too weak. ;)
