Because it will happen on the 30th. Be patient.

I agree, it is very important to be patient. Many predicted dates have come and gone. I'm still setting my sites on the Stevenote at WWDC at the end of June. My thought is a major upgrade and wanting a large forum.

well Apple has the powermacs on its front page again so that could mean something. I noticed no more fastest PC adds. anyways updates are usually just posted with no fanfare so perhaps it will be the 23rd.

I think it will be the 23rd. It has to be soon because I see no other reason why Apple would put the G5 on there site after 6 months of it being up on the market. Why put it up now? Why not some other time?

My Prediction: UPDATES on the 23RD up to 2.5GHz or FASTER (2.8 or 3GHz?).
4 models.
Prices: $1499 $1999 $2499 $2999 or $1799 $2299 $2799 and $3299.

Let's see if I'm correct.

Or maybe they just want to put another picture on the front page.. I can't image many people will be persuaded to buy a G5 within a week by seeing that ad. it'll take more advertising of the G5 to see an increase in sales... and IF they update within a week, how many more units will they sell in such a short timeframe??

it's a bit odd...

I've been thinking about when I order my shiny new PowerMac be it on the 16th or the 23rd, if I should cut out the superdrive save 200 dollars, and then buy one at an online store for less than Apple's cost. What I am wondering is, is it easy to replace the combo drive in the PowerMac with the one bought seperately? How much would a comparable superdrive cost from a third party? Of course if Apple releases the second gen with 8x superdrives then I will just stick with that. 200 dollars off the price would be nice though, means an extra gig of ram.
No. Its St. Patricks Day.

How long has FileMaker 7 been standing there? Just a couple of days.

I don't understand why Apple would suddenly focus the attention on a 6 month old Mac.

IMHO Apple is upgrading quickly..... 23rd, not the 30th.

French site, MacPlus.org, reports that according to their source, 3 new PowerMac G5 models will be released on Tuesday, March 23rd.

According to their information, the new machines will come in at the following specs:

Dual 1.8GHz G5, 256MB DDR400, 80GB HD, GeForce 5200 Ultra
Dual 2.2GHz G5, 512MB DDR400, 160GB HD, Radeon 9600
Dual 2.4GHz G5, 512MB DDR400, 160GB HD, Radeon 9600

MacPlus.org does not frequently publish rumors, but has published an accurate release date in the past.
Apple has a G5 64-bit 2Ghz for sale for: $2.999.00.

Me either and that's two of his replies I don't understand.

So who thinks PM's on the 23rd?
and who thinks they'll be 30th?
and who thinks they'll be after?

I'll say the 30th, but I've never been right, so it's best to bet against me.

CD-Rs & DVD-Rs

Not to tangent off subject, but does anyone have a clue why when there were (at least) 40x speed-rated CD-R drives a year or so ago, they weren't put into G4s or iBooks?

Seems rather strange to me that Apple would want to put the fastest available burner into a computer?

Any clues?

Display

According to some other forums a new aluminum display will be released along with the rev. b pm...I just googled Aluminum Display? + apple.....it came up with some of these forums but what I found interesting is that an old applensider.com message appeared from Oct. 2003 noting about an aluminum display that will be released soon....(http://www.appleinsider.com/news.php?id=216)Now we have these pictures on AppleInsider (http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?threadid=39538)
I believe we will have a PM and LCD update on the 23rd.....Anyone see that new splash on apple's homepage....Kinda strange that its there....maybe an indication of our highly-anticipated update......Who knows....We can only sit here and type about what we think(keepin' us busy till it comes)......

Actually, with regards to Laser Drives, Apple has an excellent history of installing very fast drives in our Macs, and without much fanfare.
And since the rumored announcement includes 8x SuperDrives, and 10.3.3 installed an 8x driver for Pioneer DVR-A07 SuperDrives, your comment is pretty much on topic.

• Apple revolutionized 2x DVD burning in ALL personal computers by installing Pioneer DVR-A04 SuperDrives in PowerMacs before anyone was doing so in PCs. Better yet,
• Apple provided iDVD, iMovie software programs, and inexpensive 2x DVD media for us to use, priced at less than half what the market cost was for DVD blanks at the time.
• Each time Pioneer has upgraded their DVD burning speed, Apple has quietly added faster SuperDrives, currently 4x DVD burners, to our Macs.
• The French article upon which this thread was established, discloses that fast, new
8x
SuperDrives will be installed in the new G5s "rumored" to be coming out March 23rd. For a
DVD/CD-R/RW SuperDrive, that is state of the art design and speed. Actually, the
Pioneer DVR-A07 is a DVD/CD±R/RW (writes both -R/RW and +R/RW) and apparently
Apple now supports both platforms...±

The DVR-A07 is a half-height drive for PowerMacs, too big for laptops.

Apple also provides mobile laser drives for PowerBooks and iBooks.
• Combo drives for both iBooks and PBs,
• SuperDrive for PowerBooks only.
• Mobile SuperDrives do not burn as fast as standard SuperDrives, more like 2x right now.

SONY mobile Combo drives offer some of the highest burn & read speeds available, and Apple uses them, including the one in my iBook G3.

If you want a fast 40x or 56x speed CD burner, get yourself a Yamaha (with T@2), or a TEAC, SONY or other drive, external or internal.

NOTE: the best quality CD discs from Verbatim do not burn at such high speeds for quality reasons; more like 16x or 24x.

I may bitch and moan about other things Apple does (or, does NOT do), but putting quality state-of-the-art laser drives in our Macs is what they do do about as rapidly as we have a right to expect.

So, Apple, now that it's leaked that the 8x SuperDrives are going to be installed in the next release of G5s,
when do we get 8x DVD-R media?
when do we get Dual Layer capability and 4x DVD-R-[DL] media?

Catalog vs Retail for new G5????

I'm going to be getting a new Power Mac G5 when they come out later this month. However, where is the best place to buy one? The Apple Store (have to pay sales tax), Mac Connection (no sales tax), Mac Mall (no sales tax), or Comp USA (sales tax)?? I figure I can just save 3-$400 on just sales tax after I get my new G5 and Apple Cinema monitor if I go through a catalog. Are there any pros or cons. I really would like to support the local Apple store. Any thoughts?

G5 Problems??

Has anyone heard about any problems with the G5's power source or power supply? I had heard somehting about that but I wasn't sure what that was all about. Have there been any problems with the computer since it was released? Also, what other LCD flat screen monitors are nice for the G5 besides the Apple ones? Any thoughts on Sony, Planar, or Viewsonic??

Everyone is WELCOME @ MacRumors.

At the www.cdrlabs.com website a few months back they reported that Pioneer had demonstrated a prototype dual layer burner. It was a converted dvr-106.

Anyway, to Borg3of5, burners are generally a commodity item (like hard disks), so all Apple (as any other manufacturer) will do is use whatever their preferred suppliers (for burners thats Sony/Pioneer) currently offer.

BTW, Yamaha have pulled out of the market, but I think HP have something like that T@2

it seems to me that we/Mac fans/Mac watchers/ and now Apple itself have really been building a large hype over this possible speed bump. With the rumors we have here, the new displays, and Apple's site it seems like a bit much, expecially with the 1 weeks advance warning on the home page of a 2.4 GHZ upgrade. I wouldn't bet on it, but it seems to me that something is up at Apple HQ and they're taunting us wit their special surprise they're thinking of announcing. It just seems a bit overhyped for a 2.4 GHZ upgrade.

Dual Layer DVD-R and Yamaha's Disc T@2

Since October 2003, Pioneer has been using a DVR-106 SuperDrive with special firmware to demonstrate Dual-Layer 4x DVD burning for a total of 8.5GB per DL disc. I want more than a demo, when is --

• Pioneer going to release a DVD-R/RW drive with DL firmware for Dual-Layer DVD burning that I can PURCHASE and take home to play with, and at what speeds will it burn DL DVD-R media?

• Someone (Verbatim, Maxell, TDK...?) going to release DVD-R[DL] media to burn on Dual Layer SuperDrives?

So, don't tell us about last year's Demonstrations, answer the questions about who, what, how much, and WHEN?

YAMAHA continues to manufacturer top-end CD-R/RW burners like the CRW-F1 (FireWire or USB 2, or both), but since standalone CD burners are giving way to all purpose/format SuperDrives DVD/CD±R/RW, Yamaha is withdrawing from R&D for anymore CD drives beyond what they have developed and are selling. Demand for CD only had dried up. But their DiscT@2 technology available only on Yamaha CD burners continue to sell well. DiscT@2 (as in to Tatoo a Disc with the CD Laser) is really a Plug-In for Roxio's Toast 6 (full or lite). Until you have seen it done, and then T@2 a disc for yourself, you have no idea how cool burning CD's can be.

HP have actually surpassed this technology with their forthcoming "lightscribe" tech. Check it out: http://www.lightscribe.com/

Minor Panic

I'm after advice. I saved for ages and finally convinced myself I could buy a 1.6Ghz G5 PM. So I bought it (GBP1400). Now with these updates coming out - and I bought just before rumor got going - I'm worried that I made a silly decision.

Basically what's the likelihood that post updates I'll get more for that money. Bear in mind that was the ceiling of what I was prepared to spend - so if concencus is that the updates will not replace the 1.6 at a similar price, then I'm happy. What form does apple have for that? Ie do they just replace a whole range at a similar price. I thought they tended to add at the top and let things shift down slowly.

If I couldn't get more for my money, what drop in 1.6 prices are we likely to see - ie how much could I save. I bought from a store so I do have the option of returning it (though I'd rather not have to).

Oppinions welcome on what I should do.

For all we know the G5 promotion at present could just be for the benefit of new iPod PEE CEE owners, to tempt them further into the light, and absoluetly zilch to do with any updates...

Can you still give it back ? If so - do it.

my 2 cents

I'll have to think of a reason but yeah It's probably possible.

Does anyone know what Apple's usual product update pricing strategy is?
