on Debian 10 Buster PPC64 I used these as according to the wiki

deb [trusted=yes] http://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian-ports/20190707T221412Z/ sid main

this gave me the oppurtunity to install nodejs

Now on Debian Sid Remix PPC64 (I guess I chose 64bit install) I followed the Install.txt and missed the [trusted=yes] which I have now added

deb [trusted=yes] http://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian-ports/20190707T221412Z/ sid main

But unlike on Buster which had the same repo there is no install candidate for nodejs.

@Lastic what happens when you try to run AF from terminal? cd /usr/lib/arcticfox then ./arcticfox . Does it start then, or toss out any errors? That just seems strange.

Cheers

Try commenting out all entries besides Buster's. Update your sources, then try installing nodejs again. If it still fails, I sense a problem with APT - which makes sense, being that you're on the unstable branch.

You could try to slot in an older version of APT from Buster, by reinstalling APT with Buster's version. That would require the Buster repo be the only entry in sources.list, and doing a sudo apt --reinstall install apt.

Now, I haven't actually tested the outcome of that command, but that's one possible solution short of reverting to Buster and working through the graphical issues. And it's curious, because I've never had any problems on the same hardware concerning LightDM and MATE. The GeForce 6600 is overall a very compatible card with most Linux distributions (Buster included), so I can't realistically see it being the cause of the problem.

What kind of flashing did you get?

It being such a lovely day outside and me confined to home and bored, I did a speed test on the Vaseky V800 350GB SSD in my iMac G5 2.0GHz.

Using the terminal command
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero bs=1024k of=tstfile count=1024 && purge && dd if=tstfile bs=1024k of=/dev/null count=1024 && rm tstfile
the SSD achieved 114 mb/sec, followed by another run at 92 mb/sec; an average of 103 mb/sec.

By comparison the mSATA 128GB SSD in my PowerBook G4 1.67 gets between 60 and 70 mb/sec.

Still being bored I powered down and put back the old 250GB 7200rpm drive to see what speeds it gave - only 39mb/sec.
I wanted the SSD back to use elsewhere but I think I'll be keeping it in the iMac and sourcing another in due course ;)

Cheers :)

In celebration of this most recent PPC challenge, I bought myself another cheap belkin USB2 card to upgrade my QS, pushing my old NEC card to and upgrade my B&W. I also upgraded my QS airport from stock to a Dynex DX-EBDTC Wireless G pci card which was a nice speed upgrade as well for my QS. The range/signal strength on these is impressive. I think all in it was $15 and some change after tax. I really like these Dynex cards and for a $1 BIN, it was as cheap as it gets and is seen as native airport.

Now onto my squirrely B&W for more shenanigans. Hmm, now that I think of it, I should've taken the opportunity to tape up and stick an extra mac 9600XT I have in my QS. Oh well, another project for another day. I am a fan of ADC though, so not having to deal with extra junk like a A1006 in there is ideal so maybe not - should probably hold out for a 4600 Titanium. Anyhoo, Love that we can still use and be super productive on these old boxes as much as an enjoyable money pit they've become :D

On a side note, I think folks could make some nice extra bank if they made face masks with an embroidered Rainbow Apple logo on them. How cool would that be. Im going to have to talk to my retired Mom about making one (she is a sewing and embroidery machine. :)

Following my experiments above with HDD vs SSD in an iMac G5, it seems speed isn't everything, as the iMac still has the 7200 drive in; it's really quite snappy, and it's running almost as well as the SSD with no real difference.
I've been quite surprised by this as usually the first thing I do with any newly acquired machine is to slam an SSD in ;)

I have a Vaseky V800 256GB mSATA SSD (which should have the same chips) in my Intel C2D iMac and it's made a great difference over the old hard drive.

Cheers :)

In "real work" news: deployed a mail server in under 2 minutes with the TiBook using a configuration management tool I wrote in Perl. The only things the TiBook struggled with were the Namecheap and Vultr web interfaces.
Awesome! I've been working on setting up a website over at the Macintosh Garden personal webspace area and using DreamWeaver on my Power Mac in OS 9 is actually quite fun!

I would like to run two spinners in hardware raid0. It’s still pretty cool in software hearing the drives going tandem-looney but as cool as it is, with the sleep/fan issues in software raid0, I can’t take it seriously as I leave my puters on 24/7 for weeks at a time. Leaving the fans to go nut balls everytime the pm goes to sleep is not an option.

Never found a solution unfortunately.

I'm not sure how many people here are familiar with this game, but Sauerbraten is a really fun FPS sort of in the vain of Q3A. It runs quite well when I turn down the quality on my Mac Mini. I might hook my trackball up to my Mini and play a little bit. Of course, if anyone's up for Q3A or another multiplayer FPS match, I wouldn't be opposed ;)

Oh yeah, its been a 3 or 4 years since I played Sauerbraten - fun FPS. It in part is what I think killed off the 7600GT in my a1200 LOL. I still have it installed on my 08 aluminum macbook.

With the graphics high enough, it probably could kill an a1200 xD

It is really fun! I enjoy it. I had a blast testing it out on my Mini tonight :)

Those gpus were notoriously bad. Just a poor thermal design that over time would cook the gpu from normal DD use let alone gaming. A Few years back, a forum member generously donated a used 7300gt to me to get my iMac back up & running which was freaking awesome. The prices those gpus brought at the time on eBay were just offensive. Anyhoo, that iMac lives in its box in my closet at the moment. I’d love to bring it out but I literally have zero room to do so. The white g5/iSight & Gen1 intel imacs are one of my fav AIO form factors despite their thermal issues.

Yeah, I used to have a Mid-2007 MBP before it died for good (I baked it in the oven four times over its lifetime :p). That's awesome that someone donated a GPU for your iMac! Same here, I love the design of that case. :D

Hi! I've just joined and I've searched the forum for "voice calls" and "skype" and I didn't find what I was looking for. I noticed someone in this thread talked about Skype not working anymore, and I don't know if it's the right place to ask or if I should create a new discussion - but has anyone succeeded in installing a voice call app?
I don't need video (it would be awesome, of course) but just basic voice calls would be amazing to connect with some dear friends of mine in these troubled times.
(I don't own a smarphone neither another up to date computer! - I do have a Ipod Touch G3, though, but all the voice call apps I tried installing didn't want to install. Thanks:)
(plus, I took a look at the FAQ and there' s a link to a thread discussing Flash but the the link provided to download it doesn't work anymore...)

A thread would be nice =) Without my powerbook with me, I would say to try facebook messenger app or hangouts app:

Better go for a cheap 2nd hand smartphone as a companion for your PowerBook.
E.g. a 60€ iPhone6 will do fine.
I will run Skype, FaceTime and WhatsApp etc. for Texting, Voice&VideoCalls without any effort.
And you can use it to make an hotspot and get yours PowerBook online, when you're on the go.
And with iFiles-App on the iPhone you can access both cloud-based services (Dropbox, OneNote, GoogleDrive) and the PowerBook (via AFP or FTP) simultaneously and then you're able to move files between cloud-storage and PowerBook through the iPhone/iFiles-App as a switchboard.
Don't waste your time to try to get that stuff done on the PowerBook. It's good for everything else, but not for that ...

For a time, back a few years ago, a member here was maintaining a method that allowed us to use Skype but voice only.

Unfortunately, with the purchase of Skype by Microsoft and their migration of the app to using their servers instead of P2P (peer to peer) for connections you can't even login anymore.

iChat might work, but I believe the servers for that were shut down by Apple quite some time ago.

I'm sorry, but there really is nothing out there for our old Macs.

Hmmm... now that's an idea... What if there was a service for users of PowerPC machines ranging from System 7 all the way up to Leopard that would allow users to voice (and even video) call given the correct hardware?

There is nothing out there for Tiger / Leopard.

There are a couple of plugins available for Pidgin for voice / video chat, and even more applications surrounding that realm for Linux. Here's one, for example. (https://github.com/awslabs/pidgin-chime/)

Even if Webapps must be used, PPC Linux has several more browser options available to it than OS X, all of which vastly more up to date.

I haven't done extensive research into the offerings, but if this is an important matter to @SnowBlush, there are possible routes of action.

While I definitely won't be able to partake in this challenge (I have waaaaay too many needs for my Intel Macs that I just wouldn't be able to use my old PPC computers for (in fact, with some of them I wouldn't even be able to use an Intel Mac from just a few years ago or a lower end Mac)), I will be using my PPC Macs a lot and will try to use them more if possible too.

I've been running computer equipment off of solar power during the day, and the Mac Mini consumes it's fair chunk of watts. I haven't powered on the Mac Mini in a few days.

Over on the Intel PC -- my "reverse" PowerPC Mac challenge, I installed LMDE4. I tried to install the Global AppMenu which in Linux-speak is a single menu bar. It doesn't work. :( I realize Menu Bars have been replaced by the oh so wonderful Hamburger Menu -- I am being facetious. I hate Hamburger Menus. I am stuck with Hamburger Menus and pretty much every window having it's own menu bar often with those underscores to indicate which Alt key to use -- oh so 1985.
