Try commenting out all entries besides Buster's. Update your sources, then try installing nodejs again. If it still fails, I sense a problem with APT - which makes sense, being that you're on the unstable branch.

You could try to slot in an older version of APT from Buster, by reinstalling APT with Buster's version. That would require the Buster repo be the only entry in sources.list, and doing a sudo apt --reinstall install apt.

Now, I haven't actually tested the outcome of that command, but that's one possible solution short of reverting to Buster and working through the graphical issues. And it's curious, because I've never had any problems on the same hardware concerning LightDM and MATE. The GeForce 6600 is overall a very compatible card with most Linux distributions (Buster included), so I can't realistically see it being the cause of the problem.

What kind of flashing did you get?

I gave up on installing Linux on my G5, since it won´t allow me to run Docker anyhow.

Running Ubuntu now on the Thinkpad X220 so I can finally start my - expirering end of May - DevOps course .
MBp Retina 15" SSD is a goner, it won´t let me reinstall any OS , luckily I was able to salvage my data .

I thought of dual-booting Leopard and OpenBSD on the Powerbook 12" G4 and after making room for OpenBSD I forgot that the installer immediately makes partition changes ( never choose "Use Whole Disk" when uncertain ) but well now I only got OpenBSD 6.6 installed.
(luckily I make regular backups)

I've installed i3 , urxvt , scrot , sxiv , ranger , otter-browser , mpv and low and behold smtube albeit the older version .

Otter-browser actually works really good, smtube doesn't segfault (maybe because I installed qt5 first ) but since it's the older version it cannot the Youtube URL due to the constant changing API.

openbsd11apr2020.png

I noticed that the newer version of SMTube is available in current so I'm going to sysupgrade to -current and have a try.

mpv installs but has slow playback, so have to tweak it still.
mplayer seems to work but needs tweaking also.

glxinfo.png

Also noticed that qemu no longer segfaults on OpenBSD ? It works now ?

qemu_is_alive.png

Thus :

-usable browser check
-usable qemu check
-<probably> usable youtube client check
-brightness keys check
-volume keys check

I'm really suprised.

Oh, sorry for that!
My own (bad) experience with faulty GPU's on early intel 15" MBP's and an early 2010/11 core-i5/7 15" MBP makes me look only for one of those several-year-old sturdy survivors ... 😬

The SSD can easily be replaced though. Not so much if the GPU gives up...

@Lastic give Minitube a look for Youtube if SMTube doesn't work. I don't do much Youtube on my PPCs but it was my go-to Youtube player for years on OpenBSD/macppc.

So I've decided to end my PPC-exclusive challenge. It's been three weeks and I do enjoy the convenience my MacBook gets me. I do intend to still use my PPC Macs for a good variety of tasks as opposed to defaulting to my MacBook like I normally would though, so in a way I'm still participating partially. ;)

I feel you , it's a mix for me also , sadly no PPC exclusive lockdown.

Ubuntu on Thinkpad X220 for my DevOps course.
Windows 10 on Thinkpad X220 for all non-open source Atari 8bit software.

MacOS HighSierra on my work MBp for all secure things and work obviously.

OS X Leopard on the PowerMac G5 soon to be used as a DAW for my Atari ST/STe/130XE or
maybe my iBook G4 14" or Powerbook G4 12"es might be used also for this.

OpenBSD 6.6 on the iBook G4 12" just to play around with i3 and stuff.

Also since I don't want any torrent stuff to run on my work MBp , the G5 pulls in my showRSS feed and downloads.

Basically if the older machines are up to it , I use them, also depends on how quickly I need to get things done, I have a LOT of patience in most cases.

Same. I watched a YouTube video on my MacBook basically for the first time since three weeks ago this morning :p

YouTube on my iBook was a really enjoyable experience thanks to PPCMC :)

Well I think I managed pretty well for 2 weeks, and proved to myself that PPC machines are still perfectly usable in 2020.

I haven't used my Pismo much, but the PowerBook G4 and iMac G5 are performing fine.

I committed adultery this morning with a MacBook and yes there's a mile of difference in internet browsing.

I will definitely carry on using the old machines but I'll also start using Intel more regularly again.

Thanks to @RogerWilco6502 for organising this challenge.

Cheers :)

That's awesome that you lasted two weeks! I might give it another shot once I can run OS X on my iBook.

Thank you for participating! ;)

I will still use both my PowerMac G5 and PowerBook G4 during the pandemic and probably plan to continue on using until after the pandemic ends. Though I do use my Macbook Pro running Mint 19.3 and my Windows 10 laptop for more secure financial related work, Tiger OSX is less bloated, simpler and nicer to use for my own home use. Thankfully, Youtube works under TFF PR20 still for the most part.

Can I ask, at the risk of hijacking this thread, which MacBook Pro you are running Mint 19 on, as on both my MacBooks (2008 / 2009) 19 boots up very slowly and seems to run quite jittery. I erased them both and installed Mint 18 and everything is now working as quickly as it should.

Cheers :)

Sure.. The MacBook Pro I am using is a 17" 2009 A1297 model Core 2 Duo 3.06Ghz with the dual graphics card and I have both dedicated GPU linux drivers loaded and updated to take advantage of the dual GPU and helps with streaming and graphis UI -- took a while to update to the newest kernel. Also need to load the macsfancontrol gnome background control daemon to make sure fan control is working under WINE. It is not installed stock in Mint 19.3 btw. If not, you'll hit thermal slowdown which limits the Macbook to operate at half of its speed. Before macsfancontrol, I was mainly operating @ 1.58Ghz, not @ 3.06Ghz and it was a jittery P.O.S and not to mention without GPU support! Running latest 19.3 Tricia now, very fast and very nice now! Miss the Mac bong though. Tricia is very demanding on most systems btw. :)

If you're set on TFF why not add Greasemonkey/Viewtube to launch video in a separate player?

I know, but it's a habit of mine to launch Youtube in a browser and leave it there, so I kept it at that. :)

As one wise man once said...

You have to know when to hold em. Know when to fold em. Know when to walk away.

And most important: know when to run.

Thank you. Probably best I stick at 18.3 XFCE on my early C2D MacBooks then as it's working great ;)

Power(PC) is PowerPC, whether created by science or sorcery.

Edit: Who gets the reference? ;)

Did you really want this?

My DBox2 with with 66MHz MPC823 PPC is running 24/7 to watch TV and my G5 is also running 24 hours a day while compiling. I only need to sit around^^

Winner ;)

I've mostly stopped as well. I've had to use my Mac Pro more and more as this goes on, so it's my main machine right now. I'm still doing the challenge on laptops though, since my macbook decided now was a good time to have the backlight inverter cable go out. So until the parts come in, it's PPC only if I want to use a laptop.

That makes sense. I've started using my MacBook for YouTube viewing and other tasks, but my PPC machines are still very active in my setup currently ;)

Something I tried eons ago but never had time to supervise , will try again to install FreeBSD on my iBook G4 and PB G4 12inchers.
Since I now have a good basis using i3 thanks to OpenBSD, let's see how far I get compiling EVERYTHING from source ...

While they are compiling I can still entertain myself with my Atari's :D
