Toyota-style disaster, yeah right. No one's lives are in danger, its just a reception issue, people go crazy when they find something wrong with Apple's products. It may be Apple's fault, but they are working on a fix, and I am sure that they will try to get it all worked out.

Fanboy are you for real? Its not a Toyota-style disaster, its even bigger.
Think about it critically not with emotion. Apple like toyota has valuable icon to protect not only because of sales but like Toyota we expect more from them.

A product is for doing something, for example a spoon is for eating soup but if you can't hold it correctly then its value is diminished even if it still does works as a spoon.

Apple and Toyota have based their reputation on reliability, just study Six Sigma and so much of it is about Toyota. Apple is not different we expect their products to work and work correctly. Apple to me missed the problem in development because they like toyota was are up on top of the market.

Apple this time went with style over engineering which is fine by me, but they need to try and figure out how to make it right. Either way I use the phone with my right hand not left and I use bluetooth almost all the time, which means this does not affect me. But its the Icon of apple that worries me, I don't want apple to be a fanboy or girl company, but one that stands for quality.

It's a reception issue, yeah, but it's not JUST so.
What we can do with a PHONE dropping frequently calls? This is a lethal fault for a PHONE.

I'd still like to know why if I grab bunny ear antennas for a TV, the signal stays more consistent and in some cases, better. Based upon what I hear, it should get worse.

Just wondering if people overseas are seeing this issue - all the noise is about AT&T and in the US - but I haven't been able to find an iphone 4 in the UK that can show the problem -
Is it somehow an AT&T thing? am I useless at holding the phone? Does it only affect some phones?

Just curious as to how far this spreads outside the US as I haven't seen/heard much noise about it over here in the UK. I would think it should affect all phones on all networks - anyone have any data??

It's not down to AT&T.

Microscoft like behavior ca 1996

What signal issue? You're holding it wrong.

That's not a bug, it's a feature!

These PR "Experts" are just trying to get attention. They are just trying to play off a this issue and get some notice.

If they are "Experts" they would know that a recall is 99% out of the question at this point.

Apple simple can't recall that many phones and manufacture new ones. It would take 6 months.

People need to not get their hopes up. There is like a 1% chance it is recalled.

Buy a freaking case. Not that hard.

I'm in the UK and it happens whenever I touch it, its a global problem, not just AT&T

There is an axiom in the PR world: You Can't Blame The User.

Seriously, you can't. Look at Toyota and Audi and what disasters they have had when they blamed a manufacturing problem on the user/consumer.

Suck it up, Apple. You are going to have to take your lumps...

Billions of dollars in profits and the highest customer satisfaction ratings in the industry? :p

You can't compare Apple customers' opinions of Apple products with, say, Dell customers' opinions of Dell products. It makes no sense. They have different requirements, expectations and alternatives. For one thing, Apple is almost always a choice.

Apple won't recall. Look at the iMac. They STILL have the yellow tinge issue. They will deal with this in the same way. They'll claim the issue has been fixed and sweep it under the rug.

The thing that needs to be recalled is Apple's idiot PR department.

Talk about a textbook example of how not to handle a brand-image crisis.

My friend here in Scotland has problems with his Iphone4 reception.

If it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck, it probably is a duck. This whole Don't hold it that way, It's just a software issue is not going over well. It's time to stop quacking and start acting on this matter. Don't believe me. Ask BP what happens if you try and fake it. I have been with Apple since the very first Classic computer. I am not about to jump ship. But I would like the captain to at least tell us the real deal. Or at least sound a little more passionate. can't a software update change the usage of each antennae? This signal dropping is real and my iPhone4 has it.

Apprarently Steve's mother did not teach him not to lie

I'm sorry your wife died sir. You should have realized you were holding your phone wrong when you tried to dial 911.

Prediction : Apple smugly rides the storm and ignores the issue. No free cases. They are too busy counting the money of the ignorant masses.

Reasoning : They have done it several times before with their computers despite unrefutable evidence.

Resolution : The iPhone4B will be released at somepoint and the issue wont be there anymore. Previous customers of iPhone4a are left hanging. Apple plays the 'move along people... nothing to see here card'.

Its a crying shame. A female non tech friend of mine even said to me the other day she wouldnt get an iPhone4 because she had heard it cant make phone calls properly ! lol ... chinese whispers and all that, but still.... damage is being done here.

"the company must respond with a more meaningful fix than a software patch"

A slightly strange comment — what if a software patch fixes the issue? It might be hardware or it might be the antenna tuning code in the baseband software, we'll hopefully find out when Apple releases the patch.

if they do have a recall not only will that destroy the name of apple, and forever be the butt end of every joke and everything sold apple.

"oh u got an ipad. do u need duct tape to make it work or is apple going to take it from you?"

Only by people like you, your so silly.

Presuming Apple are not this stupid...(and it looks like they might be considering they failed to test for this) why didn't they simply add this antenna strip on the top or bottom of the phone instead of the side?

Nobody really touches the bottom or top when using a phone or holding it. It seems like a no brainer to me. Pretty big failure in design for such a pioneering company.

oh man - can we not get past this iphone thingie... there has been nothing new on teh desktop front and apple is surely busting their butts trying to control the iphone....

I need a new imac - please lets leave the iphone alone....

UNDERSTAND that something will be done about the issue whether a recall or a software fix or maybe some other fix. I know nothing about antennas but I do know the law. Apple cannot do or say anything that could be interpreted as admission on their part that there is a problem. That could be used against them in some of the class actions that have been filed, and will be filed. So, do not expect a response from Apple other than there is nothing wrong. They are busy doing a cost analysis to determine what is more expensive a massive recall or litigating there cases with the possibility of paying out damages. It will all come to light soon.

And yes I am on my 2nd Iphone4. First had the yellow screen which did not go away. Now the second is dropping calls when I sit at my desk with a case on. My 3gs never did this at my desk. Funny, with an apple bumper I don't drop calls but with a 3rd party thinner case it does. Still love the phone but would love a fix.

Obviously the testing was not sufficient.

I have seen people with them in the mall and they have said they do NOT have the problems that others have, bad batch of antenna's.

Who knows ? I do know that Verizon is looking really good right now because of a far superior network and there devices will include the iPhone in time. AT&T is just too F'd up to deal with along with the new iPhone also.

So glad my contract has expired

I tested mine and my girlfriend's while purchasing in the mall. No signal loss, get home, signal loss.
OBviously it's related to what tower conditions are like but it's still a stupid flaw.

I'm pissed and I barely even use the phone.

Happy with my decision

I'm glad I decided to wait this one out and upgrade my aging 3G with a nice "lightly used" 3 month old 3Gs from someone off eBay for $280.

That keeps me off contract and I can enjoy the new OS and wait until the dust settles.

I'm sure that apple will live and there will be some kind of free bumper/iPhone 4.1 physical fix coming just in time for Christmas 2010.
