Wont be pre-ordering as I am on the upgrade plan, if it's a **** show like the 7 Plus was last year I'm just going to wait a month or 2 before I do it. I'm more interested in the new Apple TV at this point.

For the past five years, Apple's September iPhone-centric events have followed the same general formula. An event during the first week or two of the month, pre-orders shortly after, and then an official launch date approximately 10 days later. Apple's September schedule for 2012 to 2016 is below:

- iPhone 5 (2012) - Sept. 12 event, Sept.14 pre-orders, Sept. 21 launch.

- iPhone 5s (2013) - Sept. 10 event, no pre-orders, Sept. 10 launch.

- iPhone 6/6 Plus (2014) - Sept. 9 event, Sept. 12 pre-orders, Sept. 19 launch.

- iPhone 6s/6s Plus (2015) - Sept. 9 event, Sept. 12 pre-orders, Sept. 25 launch.

- iPhone 7/7 Plus (2016) - Sept. 7 event, Sept. 9 pre-orders, Sept. 16 launch.

If Apple plans to follow this same formula -- and it looks like that's what's happening -- pre-orders for the new "iPhone 8" and its companion devices the iPhone 7s and the iPhone 7s Plus will take place on Friday, September 15 at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

Following pre-orders, the new devices will most likely see an official launch on Friday, September 22, with pre-order shipments going out to customers and in-store stock available.

Good info. Taking this over to the FlightAware and LiveATC forums for them to be ready for the influx of hits on their iPhone tracker site for those tracking the flights their phones are on. They've been hammered solidly each year they've had their trackers for flights with iPhones on them, and have been rock solid. This year will be no different.

BL.

It will be nice to put the rumors to rest. Sort fact from fiction and decide if Apple has earned an upgrade this year from me.

For those of us who got a launch iPhone 7 Plus with the Upgrade program how does this work? Can we even preorder? Do we have to go to a store?

It seems possible. If you go into the store app today and shop, hit upgrade and it checks your eligibility in about a second or less. Then you could proceed it wanted.

Should be the same process when buying the new phone. The improved integration of the program a lot last year.

By now, everyone who's going to buy the next iPhone already has a perfectly good iPhone. I don't understand this frenetic compulsion to get the next model the second it becomes available. It seems weird to me.

For the iPhone 8 it's not about getting it the second before it comes available, but at least within a few months from release. Because you're gonna wake up with iPhone 8 estimates in 2018.

Question for you guys, I can't find any data online: Do pre-orders allow in-store pickup? I am traveling by chance to the states from 26 to 29 and I don't trust mail to be so specific.

I don't know how it works in the US. In my country we can pre order and receive the phone at home, but if you want to pick it up in store you have to order it differently, and those kind of orders start only when the phone is available in store, or maybe the night before.
So if my country will be among the first to receive the iPhone I'll be able to pre order it on the 15th or order for in store pickup on the 21th.

I'm going to enjoy seeing people staying awake until 5 AM to preorder their new iPhone, as well as people setting up a tent in their local Apple Store a week before launch just to get it first.

Yeah people are crazy. However, some of them are actually "sitters" and get paid to do it. It's amazing how lazy rich people are.

For the 6S, I pre-ordered and picked it up in store on launch day. Granted, there was also a line for pre-orders which took another hour.

I just hope my country, the Netherlands, is part of the first wave again...

if iphone 8 is heavily supply constrained, will they limit wave one countries to try and satisfy them better, or still do a wide launch and just let everyone fight for one?

This is the first time I might go with the iphone upgrade program in the UK. Do we expect to be able to register for that online? Or is my best option to just get a sim-free preorder in, and then see what happens at the store? Can I convert a preorder to an IUP in store?

There's little doubt I am in a very small minority, but over the years I bought plenty of Apple hardware and software for me and my family (including a couple of iPhone 3Gs), but never an iPhone for myself and I'm just going to buy the "8" ;)

9 AM where i live. No problem, i can order at work ;)

and the event next week is 7PM. I'll be home by that time.

Apple seems to time these things perfectly for me :p

If I was Apple I'd limit the number of countries in the first wave for iPhone Edition.
They can have the usual countries for the 7s and 7s+, they shouldn't have problems since there will be less demand for those (in particular for the 7s+) but I see no reasons to keep the same number of countries in the first wave for the edition and have very few units ready at launch day, or shipping dates reaching 2+ months after a few minutes.

It’s almost that time of the year again. Tracking planes out of China, figuring out which distribution center our phones are at, blaming Apple or carriers, refreshing status page, and best of all, trying to dissect what the hell does “preparing to ship” means. I can’t wait :D
It is a lot of fun. I've been enjoying that time of year here every since the iPhone 5. Which, by the way, was the last phone I ordered the night of the pre-orders and actually got on launch day. Ever since then if you didn't get it done the first half hour you were three weeks out. Minimum.

Is there a "iPhone Edition 256GB Black (AT&T) Apple.com Pre-Order Thread" set up yet? We should probably get to work on that... ;)

A word of advice to pre-orderers: only order your iPhone! I know a few years back people were ordering extras (I think it was bumper cases) with their phones which weren't available on launch day - and Apple didn't split deliveries so these unlucky people had to wait for the cases to become available before their phones were shipped.

Not sure if that's still the case, but I wouldn't risk it, I always just order the phone and then once that order's confirmed I go back and order any extras, also does away with the risk of phone stock running out while you're faffing around adding other stuff to your basket.

Solid advice - cheers
