Some semblance of this will happen every year. You'll NEVER be able to allocate exactly how they need to be. And in all walks of the world of course the retail and carrier stores are gonna receive bulk as quickly as possible that's where 98% of people buy these things, and there first come first serve when shipped to the store so they leave it up to you to get there. You placed your spot in a long rigid line of preorders when you did it through the app or online. I think it makes sense this seems to apply to most everything

I did the same thing yesterday reserved a verizon model and picked it up instead of the t-mobile(now cancelled) pre-order.

Same. I pre-ordered a 7+ 256GB Black ATT at xx:45 on the 9th and was still "Processing". Yesterday morning I checked for an online reservation for the same model and my local Apple Store had one. Made the RSVP and cancelled my pre-order. Got it within an hour and set it up yesterday.

Come to think of it, this is EXACTLY how I got my 6+ when they first came out. I pre-ordered but was given a 4-6 week ship date, so I checked every day until a local Apple store had what I wanted in stock and I canceled the pre-order.

Luckily I have 3 apple stores within a 30 min drive, so the chances of one of them having what I want before my pre-order gets fulfilled is good.

Apple fell short on supplying adequate quantities for early pre-orders this year, but has always held back products for store stock at launch and after. No one would shop at their stores if they didn't have stock available to buy.

Even after launch there is a difference in products available to order online for store pick up and products actually available for sale in the store.

I had a late October ship date, I walked into an Apple store yesterday morning and was able to get the same phone in 15 minutes... Although they had less than 5. Early bird gets the worm.

Same thing every year. Bought my wife an iPhone 4 years ago by walking into the store

Meanwhile online orders were back ordered for months

wow very thankful for this link. How did you get this link? Other then this direct link, the only other way I knew was to look up the phone on apple website or app by selecting carrier first, how can a person find this page through apple website?

I doubt it. I think what happened is Apple set up this page for people in the Early iPhone Upgrade program, and emailed them a link. Then some of them posted the link here. Which means that relatively few people know about this link, so it's not like any old Joe can walk off the street and buy phones ahead of people who preordered.

They could "allocate" inventory by making sure all pre-orders are shipped first.

If they did that, there will be no phones available to be sold in stores for weeks, and the news will be that Apple botched the launch. As other posters have said, only the most avid fans preorder, or run around trying to get hold of products the first day they launch. Normal people just walk into a store to buy one when available.

The same thing happened with the iPhone 5 and 6/6 Plus. Pre-orders don't necessarily mean you get it first. Apple has always set aside some stock for walk-ins. This launch was better than the free-for-all that was the 5s launch.

Didn care abut being "first" but it was the 18th and order still "pending" with zero answers which orders time times the next afternoon were shipping from ATT over people at 3-4am with the exact same phone config.

Just flat out wrong to do to people. First in, first out.

Wholeheartedly agree with you but when I checked the reservation; it was only 128 available in rose gold and black. The other colors weren't available and the other sizes weren't either.

Luckily it worked out for me.

Those who preorder are guaranteed to get theirs and if the amount that the store has for themselves (inventory) happens to match; they have the option to cancel the online one (since the card hasn't been charged) and purchase outright in store.

But since there's no guarantee that the model they want will be in the store that's most convenient for them; the online order is still there as a fall back or safety net.

They even changed it up this year so that the in demand model (plus size) can't be runner'd out for the walk ins. Only those with a reservation and that, also has a line too at this point. Some less traffic stores may not because there's not enough traffic to warrant one but it's a possibility nonetheless.

So?

They did botch the launch. Just like Samsung was too eager to beat the "lackluster" iPhone to market and ended up having batteries blowing up on them, Apple got greedy and tried to take advantage of the Samsung f-up and launch iPhone before they built up enough stock. Maybe not as bad as phones blowing up, but in the end, both ended up with pizzzzed off customers.

OP is right, phones should be going to those that pre-ordered. What's the purpose of pre-ordering if someone can walk off the streets and take your unit?
I wonder if Apple should drop pre-ordering and make it a free for all. But then again Craigslist/eBay would be flooded with $2000 jet black iPhone 7 Plus's.

Once again...pre-ordering a phone doesn't and shouldn't mean they leap to the front of the lines. Apple never promised that and if people assumed that, well you know about 'assuming'.

I like that there are allotments for the carriers, as well as for retailers other than Apple.

It's a launch, people...not a "everybody that pre-ordered gets first dibs".

So, first in line means nothing? Why pre-order then?

It's impossible to do first in first out when there are thousands of distribution points around the world across dozens of countries in the initial launch. With the pre-order you get a delivery window. With the in-store system it is hit-or-miss. Apple tried doing all-online launches last year with the Apple Watch and MacBook (much lower volume products), and people complained.

Or they can just simply increase the price for the 1st month. Supply-Demand law. We are not in a communist country.

Apple really know how to boost its sales :)

All pre-ordering does is it guarantees you a phone.

Obviously, early pre-orders will get the phones before later pre-orders, but nowhere does Apple state that all pre-orders will be filled first at the exclusion of another avenues of sale.

Think about this for a minute.

Not only is it impossible to guarantee that, but what's the point of having Apple stores and other retailers getting stock to sell to the public.

If all pre-orders - whether thru IUP, Apple, AT&T, etc. - were to all be delivered first followed by phone sales taken after launch, people probably be waiting weeks longer for their phones.

Apple needs to stockpile more stock prior to launch as well as providing more stock to their other partners. Obviously, earlier production needs to happen also although that may mean more leaks.

My preorder ship date is 10/4-10/10.

Been trying the store since Friday with no success. There's only one Apple Store nearby and so far no matte black 128/256 7+ have shown up.

I didn't preorder at all. I checked the Apple reserve site yesterday around 10 am, reserved a 128 gb black 7+, and that's what I'm typing on now. I can definitely understand the frustration of those that preordered on launch day.

Also, coming from Android devices for he past 5 years, the battery life on this thing is ridiculous. Almost 4 hours of usage and around 65% battery left.

Must be nice. I've been trying that since Saturday. No matte black 7+ anywhere near my area.
