I hope Apple innovates more

No. Apple, please don't throw more junk into the iPhone merely for the sake of "innovation." The iPhone 13 is excellent: better battery life, better cameras, etc. It's an appropriate iteration at this time, without adding unnecessary bloatware that people don't want. Good phone and a worthy upgrade for those who need new phones.

You are NOT supposed to update every single year anymore.

iPhone tech is very mature and evolves slowly.
Be that as it may then what do you find interesting with apple products since they’ve reached maturity and now have an incremental evolution? What’s in it for you?

Updating from the 12 to 13 is only ever going to be incremental - what "Innovation" are people seeking, a phone that flies you to the moon and back?
Agree, not like the competition is setting the world on fire, Samsung flagships are hardly selling these days, while apple is getting ready to sell 100 million iPhones with this launch.

Wouldn’t call 100x space zoom innovation. 😂

With apple you get features and hardware when they’re ready and work properly.

with Samsung you get so called innovation that is really gimmicks that ends up being buggy and good for nothing.

I know which camp I’m sticking with 🍎😎

Every year we get these types of post. People post they cancelling or new iPhone suck. They come here to justify their feelings/decision. Others come and brag about how awesome it is…again just their feelings/decisions. For many years I like to use the latest iPhone keyword: LATEST. Maybe not the greatest for many out there but latest yes. I love the whole ecosystem and how heavily I’m invested it in. I am under the Apple upgrade program. So I don’t mind getting the latest iPhone every year. Do I need to? No. But I can so why not? I lease my car every 2-3 years. Why? Because I like to drive new cars every 2-3 years. All in all I do this for the my personal satisfaction. Not approval/designation of others. Just get what you want. Enjoy it. Don’t enjoy it? Then return it. Use what you like. Looking forward to next Friday and picking up my next iPhone.

The most innovative time for iPhones came during the iPhone 6/7 era, when faster cell technology, larger screens, and new revolutinary apps (think stuff like Uber, Instagram) altered the use case of mobile phone dramatically.

There hasn’t been a similar innovation cycle since - arguably it has been the introduction of larger screens and expansion of streaming and games. But in order to get that next cycle of innovation you need both Apple and third party app developers innovating to create new uses cases for the phone. 5G can potentially help but we aren’t there yet

Genuine full screen device/notch-less (or pinhole)
TouchID (under screen or side button) as well as FaceID
A form factor redesign
No camera bulge/flat back design
USB-C/Thunderbolt instead of Lightning
True one day battery life
120hz on non-Pro devices

As a mini user, any of those would have been progressive updates and would have persuaded me. Even more varied/interesting colours could have swung it.

These will come. Don’t forget these are multi billion dollar companies. Can’t just give us everything in 1 shot. They gotta stay in business for years/decades. Give us small increments. I mean the car industry has been doing this for years right

Smartphones are a mature tech product now, I don't know how anyone would justify a yearly upgrade of any phone unless they gained something from it professionally or just had the money to burn
If you purchase your iPhone outright then yearly upgrades can make sense as the difference in resale of your previous iPhone and the new iPhone is smaller. If you wait a couple of generations then resale value of your current phone decreases significantly so you have to find a larger amount of money to make the difference. This year, after factoring the sale of my iPhone 12 Pro Max, it's cost me £300 to purchase a brand new iPhone 13 Pro Max, which includes 12 months warranty for free.

The number one thing that is still making me consider keeping my preorder is Apple finally going back to using Qualcomm modems.

Well, that and the VRR screens.

I'm not really sure that rationale makes sense at all, losing 300 pounds is a hell of a lot in one year, do you really think the 12 pro max is going to lose 900 pounds in three years? That's almost the entire cost of the phone.

As such, I think I did the right thing in cancelling the upgrade to a 13 Pro Max- anyone else in the same boat?
What works for you. I won't ever go near another Android phone. I don't care if it automatically feeds me lunch, showers me, and brushes my hair. I use an iPhone, and it plays well in this realm. Enjoy the devices you like.

This is 100% right

Right now I have Apple Watch series 6 and an iPhone 12 Pro Max.
This year, no new watch for me.
I ordered the 13 Pro Max and am keeping that until 2023.
My first time going every other year since the original iPhone. Truth is above. Things upgrade much more slowly now.
Next year will be my watch year.

Wait, aren't OLED screens better for outdoor viewing?
I think it depends on the nits I’m guessing. Both the 8 plus and the iPhone X share the same number of nits So yeah I’m not sure he knows what he‘s saying. If outdoor brightness is a concern then he should definitely be looking at one of the 13 pro models as they are now standard at 1000 nits(typical) while the iPhone 8 Plus is 620 nits of brightness.

I am a current iPhone 12 Pro owner- having used it as a back up phone for my Galaxy S21 Ultra for a while.
I actually liked everything about the Samsung other than the obvious lack of Apple watch compatibility and not playing nice with Apple devices in general.

I also own the 11” and 12.9” 2021 iPad Pros. Ended up selling the Samsung in the anticipation of a potential upgrade.
As nice as the high refresh rate screen sounds, there is no major reason to consider upgrading- even with the improved cameras and longer battery life. In reality, I should be thanking Apple for not revealing a product that I am compelled to move on to.

Same thing can be said about the S7 Apple Watch...the product that stole the show for me was, without a shadow of a doubt, the redesigned iPad Mini.…

As such, I think I did the right thing in cancelling the upgrade to a 13 Pro Max- anyone else in the same boat?

If you have a 12 Pro, not much in this update. Just perfecting the 12 Pro a little further. This is kind of like the 12 Pro S year.

If you are updating from anything prior to the Xs…. A good year to upgrade!

Other than refreshing designs. Phone innovation is going to slow down in the years to come.
