I would argue that people shouldn't upgrade every year if it's based on features alone. The features aren't enough. I upgraded my 11 Pro this year only because the Verizon deals were so good. I am happy with my 11 Pro, but I also love tech and love deals, so the 13 Pro, with the new form factor, smaller notch, ProMotion display and better cameras should feel like a new experience. That's the fun part of tech. I am blessed with 2 beautiful kids and a a beautiful wife and take lots of pictures so will be happy to see what the new camera features do.

The only issue with my 11 Pro is the the battery which Apple is replacing for free on the last day of my AppleCare coverage. They agreed it was 'bad' even though I was above their 80% capacity threshold.

Did you still have “peak performance” listed and what was your battery health %? My 12 pro is already down to 87% after 11 months.

“Peak Performance” @ 82% Capacity

But in airplane mode with just WiFi on, I was only getting 1.5 hours screen on and 10 hours screen off. I don’t use social media or play video so that was just Calendar, Safari, Mail for screen on. I sent 7 days worth of data to apple via chat and they agreed that my battery needed to be replaced.

I was on a flight in airplane mode just listening to music on AirPods and lost 40% in 4 hours just music playback (reading on my iPad) and it died by 5PM one day again, in airplane mode.

I exclusively use wireless charging on my motorcycle, car, desk & bedside which is most likely why my battery has degraded so quickly. Qi charging is pretty bad for batteries.

It’s a minor upgrade from a 12 series. Always was. 14 will be the next evolution of the iPhone.
I am going to get in an every 2 year upgrade while handing the old one down to my parents. I am giving my XS to my mother this time, and will buy probably a 15 series or whatever they call it by then to give the 13 to my father.

Every year there is thread started with "this is the worst"-phone or IOS

I'm upgrading from my 11Pro because I'm afraid that next year it will be a port less phone and that just won't work for me at the moment

Can you say what made you order it in the first place before deciding to cancel?

to have something to bitch about & start this thread?

it's an S year - no vendor can afford / needs to produce a revolution model each year, this year is an evolution & they're sweating the asset.

Apple Corp exists to return value on shareholder capital deployed & they see this as the best route. They don't anyone a 'worthwhile upgrade' every year.

That was probably why I went for it other than even more battery life. Super annoyed they keep saying it will have concurrent TouchID for years and then not there over and over.
I think Apple was hoping once the vaccines were distributed, it wouldn’t warrant Touch ID. But I can bet they are rethinking that now and Touch ID will finally return to the iPhone next year. They have it on two iPad models so far (Air and Mini), so its not impossible. But, we have learned a lot since March, persons who are vaccinated can have breakthroughs and still be contagious. Which means, mask wearing will be here for the next few years; especially with variants and antivaxxer skeptics. Apple was just hoping things would come back to normal in 2021.

actually, it used to be tick-tock as you put it but it’s been tick-tock-tock for the last 8 years:
iPhone 6: tick
iPhone 6s: tock
iPhone 7: tock
iPhone X: tick
iPhone XS: tock
iPhone 11: tock
iPhone 12: tick
iPhone 13: tock
iPhone 14… presumably tock again.

I suspect the rumors of a big redesign next year will be wrong, and that the next serious chassis redesign is scheduled for 2023. I’d love to be wrong though!
Good point but to further add the second tock has a slight redesign to the camera design: 7, 11 so maybe 14 is same shape as 12 and 13 series but back camera module is different. And then series 15 gets a new form factor but same camera design as 14. Just like 11 to 12 was. 🤔

ModelOutcome
iPhone 6Redesign
iPhone 6sS upgrade
iPhone 7Camera
iPhone XRedesign
iPhone XsS upgrade
iPhone 11Camera
iPhone 12Redesign
iPhone 13S upgrade
iPhone 14Camera

S upgrade - Better chip performance and battery life.
Camera - emphasis on better camera quality/newer design on back.
Notice how series 6-7 is one design, series X - 11 is another design so I say 12-14 is another design.

So it might mean the designs Prosser had is for 2023 iPhone redesign. Because next year would be change on camera design

Exactly. Very, very silly from Apple. I would have upgraded immediately just for the stupid TouchId button. Can't believe they had the technology and decided not to add it.

Apple can’t afford to add TouchID to iPhones yet.

Under-screen sensors have only been viable for a few years so would eat into Apple’s profit margin.

Power button sensors would be incompatible with their cases.

The best hope is if Apple decides to make some kind of TouchID MagSafe accessory they could charge €199 for.

I found the colors to mostly suck this year.

Purple was their most interesting new one for the 12's and they didn't carry it over to 13?
Odd and somewhat frustrating

Bigger problem is the cases also suck. Why no Sunflower, Pistachio, Cloud blue…

How long until Apple releases new colors?

Well, I'm finally moving from a iPhone 6 Plus, so I'm more than happy. Sucks to be someone who has been upgrading for years I guess. 🤷‍♂️

yes, I see what you're saying but this year the camera module is different. So, two possible options:

A) this year was actually the camera upgrade, and next year is more of a classic "S" upgrade with just faster processor and maybe something like always-on display, or,
B) next year there is an even larger camera module reshuffle that doesn't change the overall design laws of the series.

Given the heavy emphasis on the cameras in this year's marketing, I suspect it's option A. You noticed that they didn't talk as much about processor and performance, so maybe that will be the primary focus next year. (I wonder if the M1-series drained some resources from designing the A-series chips).

I just find it extremely unlikely that there will be a chassis redesign in 2022. If anything, I think Apple has been trying to lengthen the design cycles across all products lines (the iPhone was on a 2-year series until the iPhone 6, of course). So I wouldn't put it past them to keep this current design for up to four cycles. They do it with the Apple Watch, despite the yearly releases.

I think the thing that is bothering me the most is Apple's obvious holding back features/options just for the sake of profit. I get it, Apple is in the business of making money. Apple took years to release 120hz refresh rate, and I get the reason why - Apple wants to refine before releasing new technology. What frustrates me is give the option to turn of 120hz and let the user decide if they want to burn up battery life. With AOD, it's clear that Apple could implement this but feels that it's either going to eat into profits with the Watch. I have a watch, but I can't wear it while I'm at work due to the line of work I'm in, nor can I keep my phone in my pocket around the strong magnetic field environment I work in. I keep my phone on my desk. I want to quickly glance at my phone and see if I have an missed phone or message while I couldn't have my phone on me. I don't want to hear it takes '1' second to turn the display on - your missing the point - I want the option but apple is intentionally holding it back for profits.

It also AMAZES me in the current COVID situation that apple couldn't come up with a solution for FaceID and Masks. Let's go back to the same point - I have a watch, I can't always wear it. Ok, so Apple hasn't perfected in display Touch ID. We know they've imbedded a version in the iPad on/off switch. Apple couldn't give us an interim solution? Come on.

Someone previously mentioned the 'tick' 'tock'. That's what it's all about. Let's put in as little as possible to make sure we have enough users to upgrade for next year. Apple - I'd love to upgrade every year, please, take my money. Unfortunately you haven't earned it. I'm tired of being let down every year.

Ideally, phones will have both so people can choose what works for them. ToudchID doesn't work for half the year for me.

I am a current iPhone 12 Pro owner- having used it as a back up phone for my Galaxy S21 Ultra for a while.
I actually liked everything about the Samsung other than the obvious lack of Apple watch compatibility and not playing nice with Apple devices in general.

I also own the 11” and 12.9” 2021 iPad Pros. Ended up selling the Samsung in the anticipation of a potential upgrade.
As nice as the high refresh rate screen sounds, there is no major reason to consider upgrading- even with the improved cameras and longer battery life. In reality, I should be thanking Apple for not revealing a product that I am compelled to move on to.

Same thing can be said about the S7 Apple Watch...the product that stole the show for me was, without a shadow of a doubt, the redesigned iPad Mini.…

As such, I think I did the right thing in cancelling the upgrade to a 13 Pro Max- anyone else in the same boat?

#1. Monster CPU and Monster GPU
#2. 120hz ProMotion Display thats much Brighter
#3. Better battery Life
#4. New 5G Radio
#5. Better Camera
#6. Smaller Face ID Notch

All NOT enough if I had an iPhone 12 ProMAX I’d be pretty bitter and starts threads people with the iPhone 12 ProMax could chime in on and feel better.

Not me the iPhone 13 ProMAX is a game changer. The second anyone plays a game with 120hz variable refresh rate will be very special.

I am under the Apple upgrade program. So I don’t mind getting the latest iPhone every year. Do I need to? No. But I can so why not? I lease my car every 2-3 years. Why? Because I like to drive new cars every 2-3 years.
If you do these things consistently, I think both make financial sense.

Considering the rapid depreciation of technology these days and the cost of repair for both of these items, I think it makes financial sense to essentially lease both of these items.

It's not just for the sake of raw profit.

Remember, they're not just out there selling 1MM or even 10MM phones like some of these other manufacturers. If Apple commits to a specific technology, they need to secure up to 200MM units of that tech a year. The smaller players don't need to lock in nearly as many units - they can play in emerging tech earlier.

The only other folks that sell phones in those 200MM numbers is Samsung, which has far more product lines. So they may only need 1MM foldable displays a year. If Apple released a Pro foldable, they're probably buying 50MM of them. I would guess nobody can fill those orders.

People complain about lsack of imnmovation, but there is only so much you can do with the current design. To "innovate", Apple would need to start looking at folding phones and things like that. And everyone keeps telling Samsung "oh, folding phones aren't ready yet." So what is Apple supposed to do?

You are NOT supposed to update every single year anymore.

iPhone tech is very mature and evolves slowly.
Apple could do better There’s Underscreen Touch ID that android phones have had for years Heh we’re in a pandemic plenty of places that require masks. Apple is not making it easier
