Don't think this is true. Yesterday, I ordered 2 iPhone 4S's from Apple to upgrade 2 family member's non-smartphone lines. I ordered each phone separately and went thru the eligibility step for AT&T. At checkout, with 2 iPhone 4S's on 2 AT&T lines, a big red message appeared at the top telling me something like I couldn't order multiple phones "on contract" at the same time. I removed one from the cart and completed the order. Then processed the 2nd phone/line in a new order. And yes, the 2 iPhone's were not "accidentally" for the same line.
Just an FYI for those ordering multiple iPhone's on contract.
so make sure shipping address and billing address (of AT&T account) are the same, but credit card billing address can be different.
Is that how it goes?
this is bad news. I'll be ordering 2 tonight for the first time ever (gotta get one for my sister, too), and I was hoping to do it in a seamless process.
Maybe through the carrier this would work? If you're on the same plan?
^^This.
I'm in the same boat and not really sure what information i need to get from my father prior to tonight's pre-ordering. I plan on using Apple.com and we are on AT&T Family Plan. Thanks in advance.

I've done some research on other sites and most of the time during the upgrade process you need the last 4 digits of the social security number of the account holder for the wireless carrier, the number you want to use to upgrade, and sometimes if you have an account made online with ATT then the password to that account. Oh and the 5 digit billing zip code. That's what I read though and I really hope thats all you need!
Go to Apple Store either on your device or computer and you're able to change shipping address. My billing address and shipping address are now different.
That is correct. You won't need anything more than the SSN and billing zip code (aside from a credit/debit card for payment that is). But again, make sure you have your billing address of your ATT account set to the address you'd like the phone delivered to.
I've included WDE87 in the quote so they'll get a notification
Yes they will be only sent to billing address and at least thru fedex a signature is required.
So after all of this pre-ordering business, let's say we get the phone delivered to our homes. We still have to take the phone to an At&T phone to have new nano sim card installed??
That's odd, because my billing/shipping were different for the 4S, and it came to exactly where I wanted it to go.
Are we going to have to select a new "plan" and data add-ons, etc. during this process? That info might be helpful as well. Thanks guys.
just a small note for people that aren't aware.. you don't have to be home during delivery next Friday. You can print and sign a release form to leave for fedex and they will leave the package at your door. I usually tell them to leave it at my back door so it's not out in the open.
For Verizon you can't keep your unlimited plan when ordering online. So you are lucky with AT&T. Yes this means you can't keep it even if you pay full price for the phone.you'll be asked what you'd like to select. They will try to force you to move away from unlimited data, but, at least on ATT's site, they offer the unlimited plan much further down the page. I'd assume apple's would be the same but I'm not sure
If you can get to an apple store, go there tomorrow and buy an iPhone gift card. When you purchase the phone online, pay with the gift card and then you should be able to have it shipped wherever you desire. That's what I plan to do. When you order the phone, it will verify your carrier account with your social security number and zip code. I can't believe they'll make you have it shipped to the carrier billing address. I don't think apple will even be able to access the carrier billing address.
FYI, if you are on Verizon and you try to buy a phone on Apple's website or Verizon's website you will be forced to drop your Unlimited data plan even if you are paying full price. You have zero option to keep your existing data plan. Don't believe me? Go try both of those websites right now and go through the process of buying any phone, you will not be able to keep your data plan.
