Prepping for Preorder: Tips from a "seasoned vet"

definitely looks like i'll be getting up at 3 friday morning for the preorder...always get up at 5 for work anyway
I really hope this isn't true. I am away at college about four states away and, it would really suck if I had to have it shipped to my house address and not my college address
I just spoke with an apple representative on chat too just a minute ago and asked if the info needed to match that of what the billing address of your credit card. They told me that it just needs to match the billing address to your wireless carrier (so for my case ATT). He also said that I can just log into my wireless account and change it to the address that I want my phone to be shipped at.
Does the name on the credit/debit card have to be the same name on the account? My son will be pre ordering through Verizon using his debit card and my names on the account. Last year we pre ordered through apple using my wife's debit card, she names not on the account and didn't have a problem.
Do you know if the att/verizon/spring online store will begin taking pre-orders at the same time?
I'm in my brother's business account and it's easier if I just order it through the att online store.
Questions
Will it matter if i pick standard shipping vs express? Both will arrive on the 21st right?
Preorder will most likely be 12 PST, so 3 AM EST right? Class on friday so i'd probably have to sleep at around 10/11, wake up, preorder, then go back to sleep. Would they be sold out by 6 or 7 AM?

I just talked to an Apple Online Store rep. They said that Apple will announce that tomorrow.
On my account, I have my billing address set to my house, and my shipping address set to my work. Are you guys saying that Apple will just automatically ship to my billing address? Do you think it will be a problem if I leave my shipping address as my work? Or should I adjust my shipping address to match my billing?

It's amazing the range of different answers one gets from apple representatives. I guess we'll all find out early Friday morning.

When you purchase the phone, you're given an option of adding a new line or replacing a phone. You'll want to add a line. You won't need to check for eligibility since you're adding a line.
Last year my friend ordered the 4S on Apple getting it shipped to a different address then his billing, since we were at college, and it said it went through but it randomly got cancelled a few days later when the shipping times where already pushed backed. He was so pissed.
I totally agree. I heard that they are also tomorrow making an announcement/update on the pre-ordering deal (times its going to happen an such). Hopefully they will also clear up these questions too.
That's the question no one can seem to get a consistent answer on. Some say that apple will ship to an address that's different from the credit card billing address, some say they will only ship to the billing address of the credit card, some say they will only ship to the address on the wireless account. Take your pick.
Yep i've called a few times and I've gotten different answers.
Haven't decided if i'm ordering from Verizon or Apple. I'm sure Apple will ship in time for delivery on or before the 21st, whats the likely hood of Verizon doing the same?
100% pending a disaster with FedEx trucks that would also effect Apple shipments.
If you can get to an apple store, go there tomorrow and buy an iPhone gift card. When you purchase the phone online, pay with the gift card and then you should be able to have it shipped wherever you desire. That's what I plan to do. When you order the phone, it will verify your carrier account with your social security number and zip code. I can't believe they'll make you have it shipped to the carrier billing address. I don't think apple will even be able to access the carrier billing address.
1. If I purchase through Apple's site, can I keep my grandfathered AT&T text and data plans that are no longer offered? (1000 texts for $10 and 2 GB for $25)
2. Didn't the 4S pre-order have a delay? Something like 45 mins to an hour before people were able to truly pre-order? I just don't want to stay up till 3 A.M east coast time and then stare at a computer screen as I can't get through to pre-order. Am I taking a big risk if I choose to wake up at 5 or 6 A.M instead?

I can only speak for the second part, yes the Apple website was down for like 45 minutes, which was the only reason I decided to order from Verizon. I don't think the phone will sell out by that time, with the 4S it took longer then that if I remember correctly but no one can make any guarantees.
A couple members at the iMore forum said the Apple site pre-order was a mess for the first 2 hours.

I was planning on firing up AT&T's site and Apple's simultaneously. I'm starting to think I'll try staying up till 3 am. Ugh, so bad for us east coasters. Thanks for your replies.
That's what I did last year and Apple's site was down for 45 minutes so I said screw it I am ordering from Verizon and going to bed. Glad I did because my phone was getting shipped to a different address then my billing.
