I'm confused. Is this a law that passed both houses of congress without filibuster? Which democratic senators voted for it? I missed this entire debate. Or is this just rolling back executive orders that exceeded the authority of the president anyway?

Net neutrality also was not a law debated and passed by legislatures but regulations imagined out of air. I vastly prefer laws get made by congress. If Trump reverses them great. If they are good regulations congress can pass laws establishing them.

By the way, privacy laws should fall under the FTC not the FCC. Google and others lobbied for the privacy laws to be enforced under the FCC because Google and others are not telecoms or ISPs and laws would not effect them collecting your data giving them an unfair advantage. So let's hope the next step is to make a new privacy law for the FTC that includes Google and ISPs.

The FTC is forbidden under US law (passed by Congress, not merely Executive Order) from regulating common carriers. Only the FCC can do that.

Has this administration done ANYTHING so far that is good for the common person, instead of enriching corporations and the wealthy?

Anything? It's distressing to see how completely in the pockets of big business they are. And the crazy thing is a lot of people who voted for Trump supposedly did so because they thought the *Democrats* were in the pockets of big business.

I mean, maybe they were a little bit, but nothing like this!!

Yes, removed Democrats from power.

Trump is your typical NewYork Hustler/Con-man. He could care less about the average american. His whole Whitehouse run was a money grab to enrich him and his donors.

It goes to show how Middle America is so gullible, and easy to con!

It's "couldn't care less", actually, if you follow the logic through.

I think this news is non-news, because:
1. Those companies sell user data one way or another, and assuming they some how wouldn't because of a law is foolish. They'll monetize their own mother in a heartbeat.
2. Your privacy is compromised from the start by using Apple / Windows / Android. Don't kid yourselves.
3. Overcoming 1 and 2 has been a primary step to restoring your privacy and anonymity ever since this has been an issue.

The good that can come out of this news is that people should once and for all take notice of the privacy issue and realize that they can only solve it by managing it themselves. Go to the EFF website and start learning.

Trump is bad for business. The reason the Internet worked so well is because they could remain anonymous.

Yep. Let's get rid of the FDA. We shouldn't burden the pharmaceutical and food industries with pesky requirements to make sure their drugs and food products are safe.

I love it when people make jokes not knowing that there are a huge group of people who would be fine getting rid of the FDA and openly politically advocate it- many of them cancer pts because many FDA regulations slow the rate of experimental drug introduction. I think we need an FDA but it is a profound lack of imagination to believe if the FDA disappeared private institutions would not find some way to do the same things.

Anyone who cares about this before the isp monopolies is being silly. Eliminate the isp monopolies and let the market decide if people care about their browsing date. My guess, throw a $10 bill credit out there for anyone willing to share the data and 90%+ of the people take it.

Nothing on the Internet is private. Never really has been and never will be. I'm much more worried about government collection than business collection.

Consumers can still vote with their wallets even with regulations.

Must have missed that option when I was paying my health care penalties on my taxes...

On the one hand, disgusting.

On the other, let consumers choose what's best - if a company sells the data, consumers will leave and force them to change or close.

The FTC is forbidden under US law (passed by Congress, not merely Executive Order) from regulating common carriers. Only the FCC can do that.

Part of the FCC rules that were overturned changed the status of ISPs to common carriers so they could be regulated like 1930s phone companies. That was just idiotic and nothing more than a power grab by the FCC. Hopefully the FTC will now use its broad authority and experience to enforce online privacy as it did prior to the stupid rule.

So when are you guys going to impeach this latest republican idiot?
I may not be American but come on, we've got dumb conservatives too (and yes a dumb population that googles "what is the EU", after voting us OUT OF THE EU!) but ours are at least somewhat tolerable. Yours are downright dangerous morons and everyone in the entire world knows it except you! This guy is meant to be the leader of the 'free' world, and he's making us all less free, less safe, and less of a nice place to be.

So theres my 'two cents' as you say across the pond. Impeach him. Because everything this guy does, doesn't just affect the US, its affects everyone else too. Hence my little rant.

Ok, rant over. Get rid of this spoiled child! STOP VOTING IDIOTS PRESIDENT!

If Pelosi was supporting the privacy rules enactment, that tells me all I need to know. That woman is only out for one thing -- for the government (and by extension, herself) to have as much power and control as possible.

If word gets out that certain ISPs are engaging in nefarious or unsavory practices with people's personal information, people can (and many will) take their business elsewhere. Money talks. If corporations think they've now been given the power to screw their customers, they'll think twice when they run the revenue numbers once they start hemorrhaging customers.

Every single American consumer has the power to remind the companies they do business with that they are in business to serve their customers. If you don't like a company's business practices, don't give that company your hard-earned money! Government doesn't need to get involved.

Remember, all Pelosi and others like her want are more power and control. They'll try to disguise their true motives to make it look like they're "protecting" the American people; but it's all about getting more power for themselves.
