just an fyi, siri requires an internet connection for EVERY request. this is why it's not on the ipad 2. even the ipad 2 with 3g still might not have a persistant internet connection. i'm sure i will get pleanty of nah sayers, but turn your wifi off and put your phone in airplane mode and see if siri works...spoiler, it wont.

I have an internet connection almost 99% of the time I turn my iPad on and so does almost everyone I know. This is not an issue.

Fixed Siri - Will not connect issue

I just did a reset on all Settings and Siri came back to life. Hope this helps anyone.

Just for idiots like me.

I dont know if this was the issue for anyone else, but Siri was giving me the same error messages. I was so mad but then I realized that in order to save time when I synced my phone, I synced to my computer instead of the cloud. ( I thought that it would take to long because everyone was syncing to the cloud yesterday). I then realized that siri gets none of its information directly from your phone. your contacts and your email addresses and such must be downloaded to the cloud in order for siri to recognize them. and if your phone hasnt been synced to the cloud then she wont work at all. I hopes this helps someone, I wish I would have known this last night because I was mad at siri and it turns out it was my own fault for trying to be slick.

By the way Siri works fine now that I downloaded to the cloud. I feel so dumb.

thank you for making my point. 99% of the time is not all the time. my point was that in theory an iphone has an internet connection 100% of the time, given that a data plan in required to have an iphone. with the ipad however, internet is an "option". even with the 3g version a data plan is not required. so apple has simply chosen not to offer it on the ipad because not all ipad users will have a full time internet feed. i dont completely agree with that decision, but given apples world of secracy on how their technology works, it make sense to keep that minor detail of needing internet for siri to work hush hush.

No, Apple has chosen to put it only on 4S because it wants to sell more 4Ss by making it novel enough, different from 4. The iPad 2 was novel enough and it doesn't need Siri yet to sell. I'm sure Siri will come to the iPad eventually, even with intermittent internet.

Siri's ability to connect to network has been off and on for the wife and I since yesterday.

Right now is particularly odd though because we're both on the WiFi here at home and Siri on my phone is working fine but her Siri says she can't connect to the network.

The Siri servers seem to be off line. No connection since a little after 6:00PM PDT. I saw a message on an Apple discussion board confirming this but it had no link to an official Apple message.

"Sorry, I am having trouble connecting to the network.

I think this is the reason Siri was limited to the iPhone 4S. This way only a few million people are inconvenienced as Siri works through her growing pains, not tens of millions of people.

I just made a thread about this and then I found this one, go figure. But yes, I am having the same issue too and I'm on AT&T. I'm relieved that it's not only me but hopefully they get it resolved soon, not because I will using Siri constantly but because I simply want it to work whenever I chose to use it.

Siri and voice to text in keypad

Not working well at all same same...the ONLY reason I upgrade from the 4 to the 4S was for the voice to text feature. That was the only thing I missed about my old android phone. Im sure apple will get it fixed considering Siri is the only real difference from the 4

She didn't work at first for me yesterday, but then worked after 20 minutes the rest of the day. I woke up today and haven't been able to get her to connect once.

Mine hasn't been working for about an hour now. I wish it could do simpler tasks without going online (like playing a song from your playlist, setting a reminder, etc...)

I was thinking the same thing. The reminders, timers etc. is what I use most. Maybe Apple will implement that. But I wonder if it would take up to much space? It would be nice though.

overload

Yeah, color me it was working great till this afternoon.

What I realized though about SIRI, which I really don't like actually, is that even simple phone dialing - which used to be built in VOICE CONTROL won't work, so if the network is down or poor siri connectivity then using voice dial stops working too.

bummer.

Very true and very annoying.

Not working for me at all today and what a joke. Those of you hanging on to the "this is a beta" give me a break Apples only differentiator is this and it isn't ready for prime time. So keep it out of the key note keep it off the ads if it's really Beta don't release it into production for every 4S user.

It is a server overload. They'll fix that by adding capacity. Over a million people playing with it at the same time asking stupid questions probably wasn't adequately anticipated. It worked perfectly for me yesterday until late afternoon. It has worked well all day today after a few hiccups early this morning.

As for the old voice commands not requiring an internet connection like Siri does for the far better vox recog and AI, just disable Siri in the settings menu. All of the old voice control functionality is still there according to another thread here.

Is anyone connecting to Siri?

With all of us not connecting who if anyone is connecting to Siri?

yep, siri is still down for me as well. it went down last night around the same time.....hopefully they will upgrade the servers to handle this amount of traffic.

If network is down and you still want voice control, just go in to siri settings and turn it off. This will bring back the old voice controls when you hold down the home button. Then just turn siri back on when you want to use it again.
