To answer my own question.. there are two holder styles by ProClip, one that you adjust to allow the phone to slide in and out and grabs the phone by the sides (w/ or w/o charging dock - [demo video]) ... and another that is non-adjustable and grabs the phone top-to-bottom via spring-loaded clip (w/ charging dock - [demo video]).

So new question: Which type is better?

Mines not adjustable, it hold the phone by the sides, the phone snugly slides in from the top, no spring loaded clip.

If yours isn't adjustable for width, then you must have the model for iPhones without a case.

Referring to my links above, I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the two holders designed for cases and which one is better, adjustable side hold or spring-loaded top/bottom hold?

I have the adjustable case (Item #: 514667) and my 6 Plus with leather case slides in comfortably and is very stable. Easy to get in and out with one hand and no damage to the leather case after using the mount for nearly a month. Highly recommended.

I got a large universal phone holder for my Pelican Protector case, works pretty well. Screwed the ProClip mount directly into my radio bezel, I didn't like the mounting option they had for my car. Love the holder!

And it's a 6 Plus, basically the same size as the headunit.

Thanks for the report. That's what I wanted to know.

I called Proclip to ask about the differences between the two holder styles I've been asking about in this thread, this one:

And this one:

They said most people get the shorter one. The taller one with the spring clip was originally designed for off-road vehicle use. It's also useful for people who share a vehicle or who change phone cases, as it will accommodate various sizes w/o adjustment.

I think I'll save $20 and get the first one. .. Now just waiting for the Panavise mounting brackets to arrive from Amazon and hopefully a 15%-off coupon from Proclip via their e-mail newsletter... someone mentioned they send those out once in awhile.. so far nothing.

That's a great idea.. good way to save some $, cuz no additional mounting bracket needed.

If I could find an open spot on my older car I'd do the same thing.. but my wife would probably kill me if I put some holes into her new car.

As with anything else better is subjective. I prefer the spring loaded design myself. It's a bit more secure and versatile. However I've used the other design with other devices and have never had problems with it. If you intend to use your device landscape then the spring loaded design may be better suited.

That's a plus for the ProClip and Panavise vehicle mounts. No need to drill holes so you can remove them and return your vehicle to stock.

Is there a ProClip option for varying devices? I've got the 6 Plus and the wife has a 5s. I'd love to invest in their mounts but I need something to work with both. Currently using the Kenu AirFrame which is fine but not the best.

Which case do you have? I have the 514667 holder and my speck case with built in stand's lightning cable cutout isn't wide enough Insert the cable. I'm looking for any compatible case so that I can stop taking my car off every time I get into my car. Thanks!
