Just got my high spec 16”. Same issue. But moving windows around is 120hz clearly, as is browsing the App Store and scrolling Messages etc. Safari and Chrome just run terribly.

Yeah this has been my experience, 120Hz in a lot of areas but Safari scrolling it just doesn’t at all. Well I’m glad to discover I’m (mostly) not going crazy reading this thread!
I wonder if it has to do with Spotlight indexing in the background etc as I noticed this issue when I first started using the device, but all seems fine now.
Ughhhh...have been searching around for any info on this, thank god, I literally thought I had a defect. Just got my m1 max 16" this morning and I cannot believe it. I thought okay maybe it's because the oled on my iPhone is so much better or something. So I put it side by side to my iPad and Jesus Christ. It's literally like these MacBooks have 60hz. What gives? All this money for a powerful computer and it can't even scroll Twitter without lagging.Hey all, picked up a base 16" today and was scrolling through here, Reddit, and the Apple website to find the scrolling experience not smooth at all unlike the iPhone 13 Pro and iPad Pro. I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing or feeling this? ProMotion is enabled in the display settings, no low power mode or reduce motion enabled, both on and off charge. Have updated to macOS 12.0.1 and no different than before. Feels like other apps too like scrolling through my music library also is not very smooth

Agree, I am used to 144hz on windows so I noticed immediately. Scrolling other apps is butter, but safari, something is wrong. It's not as bad at 60hz but its not as smooth as it should be.

I think that the comparison to an iPhone Pro Max is unfair. First, it runs a different OS with different apps. Second, macOS behaves differently and has to deal with a completely different window management. I compared scrolling between my 24" iMac and my new 14 MBP, and the difference is big. Everything is much smoother on my MBP, especially when scrolling slowly. You can feel the responsiveness and smoothness. Also, OS animations are much better than before. Having said that, of course going back to 60Hz is not bad. I used my iMac for a while and I found scrolling to be ok, but not as good as with ProMotion of course.
Anyway, I don't see any stutter and I love the display.

OS animations seem to be working. Scrolling in App Store seems to also be working. But Safari is not right.

With all my MacBook's Safari has always been the best browser for battery life. Maybe Apple kneecapped Safari at 60hz for better battery life?
I have the same issue on MacBook 14' with stutter scrolling in safari. Tried Firefox and chrome too, same issue. Installing 12.0.1 but seems to be not a solution for this. I have my 13'' M1 pro and other apps scroll better, i.e. messages, TV, App Store, but they appear better and similar on both. Only place I noticed promotion was potentially when I moved the cursor when booting my MacBook :\. Shows pro-motion is enabled in settings so not sure what else to do. Perhaps restore?
I was about to reply that I also see the same on my 14", I was switching between ProMotion and 60Hz for the display settings then testing out scrolling and opening Mission Control... saw zero difference. Then realized I had Low Power Mode enabled, so I disabled and 100% a night and day difference.
Putting into high power was one of the first things I tried. Didn't make a difference for me.
Yeah definitely something not right with Safari. Only rendering pages at 60Hz whereas pretty much everything else in the OS seems to be 120Hz.
Really hope this gets fixed soon. 80% of my scrolling occurs in web browsing. If that's stuck at 60Hz then there really isn't any point, ha.

Seeing as how ProMotion works in Safari on the iPad Pro I can only imagine this is a bug right now. However on my 14" upgraded to macOS 12.0.1 I do notice a difference when switching between ProMotion and 60 Hz in the Display settings.
Safari feels like 60hz to me. Just received my 16" M1 Max. Messages and other stock apps feel snappy (for the exception of News) as expected. Not as clear as a 120hz OLED panel, but good enough for me.
just got 16"Max 32/64 4TB and tested scrolling on Safari and I also felt some kind of lag but definitely promotion is much smoother than 60hz. Hope it will get fixed soon

But this appears consistent with most people's issue with safari from what I'm seeing. Overall still not as great compared to my M1 iPad Pro and iPhone even when running chrome/firefox which scroll buttery smooth. Not sure, I love the screen, but not sure what to think of promotion here to be honest esp compared to my 13" M1 pro that is sitting next to

Wow you are right. It seems to work in other browsers but is still laggy/janky.
Ironically the best experience for me so far is in Microsoft Edge. Definitely 120Hz and relatively smooth so far.
I still think they will update Safari, but c'mon Apple. How did this release like this with the native browser not supporting a huge new feature?
Safari is definitely stuttering. Man this is disappointing. I hope they fix this in an update. And its not better than previous MacBook Pro's, its worse.

Try toggling between ProMotion and 60 Hz. When I did the first time to test Safari was stuttering bad, then switched it a couple times more and it fully smoothed out
Just like the iPhone 13 pro they messed up pro motion and still waiting on a bug fix they promised like reachability still lags like 60hz this is the new apple they hype things and release half baked products, this won’t be fixed anytime soon maybe never, the screen is worse than my intel i9, it’s not any brighter and actually has less contrast and hdr doesn’t go any brighter then the intel one, thanks apple you saved me £3300
