Yes blacks are better but no I spent hours with my M1 max and intel i9 16” comparing and both with max brightness and auto brightness off there was like zero difference on normal viewing and with hdr on you tube again it was slightly better but not brighter maybe just slightly; I’m a videographer and display calibrater and I know my stuff
No way you're videographer/display calibrator and claim theres no difference between your i9 SDR display and HDR one. Would suggest not using YouTube as your testing method and play an actual HDR/Dolby Vision movie from one of the streaming services. If you can't tell 1600/1000 nits vs 500nits on the i9 then...

I'm with @Sheepish-Lord here. Unless you're actually blind there's no way you wouldn't notice any difference between the old MBP's and the new. The only other explanation would be you're just trolling.

Can you record the video with chrome, chrome looks nothing like that safari to the right.
I tried Chrome, it's exactly the same. Well not exactly, there's something a little different about how Chrome handles scrolling. Like it's more "line by line", if you will. But the refresh rate of the scroll is still not 120hz.

lol it's right here.

We know. It's been discussed repeatedly. This is from yesterday. No browser has 120hz scrolling even though Firefox, Chrome, and Edge (I think) are reporting as such.
Firefox runs the same as Safari/Chrome, i.e. bad. It seems like apps need to be updated to support ProMotion. e.g Facebook Messenger (and WhatsApp) do not run with ProMotion 120hz, but Messages does. Scrolling is so clearly so much smoother on Messages than FB Messenger/WhatsApp.

What's weird is that Firefox is reporting higher framerates on the Blurbuster test.

But in actual usage it runs the same as Safari...

i mean, even on my 13 pro safari it will show up as 60hz even though promotion on the 13 pro works phemomenally. regardless, this is still an issue, as i notice obvious ghosting (blurriness) when scrolling on my 16" MBP.

if the issue doesn't get resolved within the 14 day window i'll be returning the MBP. as much as I like it, I'd rather wait until the display is improved further to get true 120hz VRR. just imagine potentially its a hardware issue and they release an updated hardware revision that fixes the issue. you're stuck with a half baked pro motion, that would suck.

it's not, it's a bug in safari that will be fixed lol.

chromium devs confirmed it works in chrome, it's just safari.

WilliamG is not a chromium developer, read the tweet that you posted, go to the link. They describe in detail what the issue is. I've always said, Safari has a bug, and I was right.

Okay.
“> See IMG_1350 for Safari, IMG_1349 for Chrome. Both are scrolling at 60 Hz despite Apple’s claims of a 120 Hz scroll in Safari. It’s unclear why Safari isn’t scrolling at 120 Hz”
I made it bold for you

A hardware issue doesn’t discriminate between apps. It would’ve been 60Hz across all apps or intermittently. News, Messages and even swiping between full screen apps work at 120Hz which means it’s software related.

i think its a system wide pro motion implementation software issue, not just issues for certain apps. i see ghosting even when moving around a window back and forth.

another poster indicated that when running windows via parallels pro motion was super smooth and responsive

I’m just saying that from what I’m seeing on my 14” and the reports elsewhere the hardware is fine. Just need some software tweaking which will probably be addressed in a future update.

Just getting my 16 inch m1 max set up. testufo and threejs examples indicate that 120hz does work at some level but chrome's scrolling doesn't seem to be properly going to full 120 at the moment. I'll give them a few weeks to fix the software.

Actually sometimes I can get chrome to do 120hz while scrolling. But it's hugely inconsistent.

Safari is not going over 60 at all it seems.

Set up your adblockers! they are the number 1 cause of extra battery usage and page hitching as you scroll.

same thing here

I apologize, you guys were right. Those with developer accounts, update to 12.1, safari is way smoother on scroll

If it is fixed. This is massive! .. also the other thing to test out is the HDR playback in browsers. Does it still crash the system sometimes??

I think other bugs on Monterey is the trackpad tap to click is sometimes missing the click

Ooh good point, I know the 8K HDR crashed lemme check!

Check the same video!!! Also see if it fixes the scrolling etc in other browsers like chrome!! Thanks!
LOL! Apple disabled 8K HDR in Safari, I no longer get the option to select it..

8K HDR confirms works in Chrome with AV1, no stuttering or crashes.

It's disabled prob because of AV1. Usually safari only supports codec that is hw accelerated. And chrome supports both hw and sw accelerated videos. Can you try that on chrome and try your best to crash it? . Also I'm guessing if you use the h264-enhanced and use the block AV1, it would remove the 8k in that video too. If it does then it's AV1 that's removed from safari since it's not hw accelerated.

Also try that if it doesn't crash using vp9 4k HDR!!. Wow they need to push this ASAP LOL. I'm bummed that I wasn't gonna be able to check the displays HDR on YouTube when my MBP comes because I'm afraid it's gonna crash and I'm gonna lose everything in the background lol

Oh how's the scrolling etc on chrome? Better? Or?

Holy crap this feels massively better.

That's exactly it, when I block AV1, it shows up only 4K HDR in Chrome, when I unblock / refresh, 8K HDR appears. I have to find that video someone posted asking if it crashed the MBP, that one definitely crashed my mbp when I tried to play it. If you have example videos you'd like me to try just paste them in. However I have no such extension on Safari, it doesn't even give me the choice probably to what you mentioned.

I'll check more videos, Chrome feels better? but I always thought chrome felt snappier on scroll in 12.0.1 than Safari.
