Why are you resorting to a hypothetical? Can't you deal with the reality of the situation? iPad 3 buyers got shafted... the full extent of the shafting was just recently revealed. What is so difficult to understand?
Understand? I think it's YOU having trouble 'understanding'. Just six months ago, iPad 4 buyers were shot down...on this very board, if you (or the person in the post) decided to sell the 3 and buy a '4'. 'There's no difference other than the lightning connector'....'who cares about benchmarks...the 3 runs every app available'....iPad 3 is THE bargain when the 4 dropped...on and on and on. As an iPad 3 owner that DID upgrade to the 4---I remember these silly comments in dozens of threads. It was the same with the iPhone 4-4s transition. No one seems to understand the 'guts' on these products. While externally it's impossible to tell the difference, the internals is and always has been (with iOS) where the significance is. Your response has been appropriately responded to several times in this thread...but there's a whole lot more to each iteration than external cosmetics. Any iPad 3 owner (including myself) that was delirious enough to believe that it would 'keep pace' with the newer '4'....especially after 5...going on six years now of iOS updates (iPhone, iPad, iPad mini)---is truly ignorant to the way technology works. The iPad 4 is a BIG update from the '3'. And to this day, you can still recoup a lot of that investment back if you're in the 'gotta have Air Drop' camp. Other than that single upgrade from iOS 7---the iPad 3 will certainly benefit from most other updates. It'll still be the same tablet you have today....and the day before iOS 7 drops. Apple isn't 'shafting' anyone. They're continuously innovating and updating....and in the realm of iOS devices, the speed is going to be faster than in the computer sector. Tablets are still in their infancy. Computers are mature. There is rabid competition in this sectoral well. While we aren't used to 'less than' yearly updates...it did happen....and it will happen again. If this is something that drives you THAT crazy...you should quit reading Apple forums, disregard keynote addresses....and go back to enjoying your device. It's JUST as good today as it was yesterday...and tomorrow....nothing will change.
As far as AirDrop...I find this funny as I own 9 different Macs. 3 personal, six for the business we run and all are 'recent' models. iMacs and MBPs. As well as a pair of Airs. It was just a couple of weeks ago I actually noticed AirDrop in my Finder...used it to try it and thought it was kinda cool....but certainly not a necessity, nor something I'd raise hell about if I didn't have it.
TL/DR---you should've known. Six days, six weeks, six months....or a year later, Apple was bound to update the device. It's inevitable....and again, in this tablet space....where Apple is still trouncing the competition....they WILL update when they're ready. You should do the same and not look back. Many an argument and/or debate has been raised about the differences between the 3 & 4. Now we are starting to see the inevitable separation due to the internals. iPad 5 is coming down the pike too. It's bound to be faster than my 4. It's bound to have more features than my 4---and with future iOS updates, it'll get 'extras' that my '4' won't be qualified for. As usual, I'll take the hit...or pass the 4 down and buy the 5 IF there's a 'must have' application that I feel will benefit me. You can do the same. Resale of the iPad (and all Apple products) remains high. Just write it off as the cost of ownership
My god OP is a complete numpty
Kinda hard to tell....seems like he or she conveniently disappeared. To me, it's sad that others (albeit only two or three) agree with the OP's stance. 'Apple apologist' BS is just that. B. S. We are ALL tech fans or we wouldn't frequent MR. As such we should ALL be aware how fast technology moves...the pressure Apple is under to stay competitive....and last but certainly not least, learn to appreciate and enjoy what we have. While there may be 500mil+ iOS devices owned in the world, there is a lot of redundancy. Families that own multiple devices. IOW....with over 7 billion folks on earth....over 80% don't have an iPad or an iPhone or a MBP....or, you get the idea. Feel lucky we have what we have. If you don't like it, Samsung is knocking a new device out every other week. It could be worse
The inventory level of parts is of no value to customers... fanboys yes, customers no.
Given a flat rate of purchases over the span of those 7 months, an iPad 3 owner on average had owned their device 3.5 months before the iPad 4 was released. If you don't believe that spending a premium for a quality device only to have it fall to (partial) obsolescence within 3.5 months on average, and greater obsolescence (inability to support some iOS7 functions) nearly a year later, then there is nothing short of Steve Jobs rising from the grave grabbing you buy the collar and shouting at you, "Apple shafted iPad 3 owners" that would convince you.

A...you're bad at math. B...you must be young. See above. And please....please leave SJ out of the debate. He obviously worked on the retina iPads. Was there for the design....and was an absolute genius that, along with the crew he assembled....offered up a new product that NONE of us knew we needed. Now we can't get enough. Steve is gone. Apple doesn't shaft their customers. Of all the tech products I've purchased in my 42 years of life, no one compares to Apple when it comes to design, performance, post purchase support---and they've now got what Microsoft had in the 80s and 90s....the majority of developers (software) creating magnificent apps for the masses. The developers aren't going to abandon the 'bulk' of ownership....which will still be A5 based gear even this fall when the A7 drops. iPhone 4/4s iPad 2&3 as well as the mini. I'm sure Apple is well aware of this too. The original iPad, sure...it's long in the tooth....but my 8 year old son knows no difference and uses his daily.
There is no 'partial obsolescence' as you say. There's only forward momentum. If you didn't realize this when you bought the 'new' iPad (3)....that 18 months later an iOS update would drop that may exclude an item or two from your purchase, you've not been around technology long enough...nor do you understand how the 'guts' limit functionality. They're not trying to screw you over....they simply know the limitations of the hardware, in this case the P2P chip and new B/T standard that came along within the past six months with supply enough and stability to boot.
An idea for ya...if its hurting you this bad right now, sell your 3, buy a refurb 4---you may only be out a 'C' note....and you'll be set. Better yet, hang on to your 3...when the 5 drops, take a bit more of a loss and laugh at all of us 'old school' iPad 4 owners when iOS 8 rolls out in 2014!
All this whining....over AirDrop? Wow!!! I think we've sunk to a new low having a two page debate on a 'feature'....of convenience. Not of performance.
