I've had an iPad 3 since launch and saw no reason to upgrade to the 4 but come this Fall I'm going with either a 5 or a retina Mini. I'm typing this on my wife's Mini and I love this form factor

iPad 3 is the ugly step child. I have owned all 4 iPads. iPad 1 also. But iPad 1 gets a pass since it was the first product.

The A5X processor barely is designed to handle the retina display which barely any improvement on the A5 that's on the iPad 2. That's even with the 1GB RAM on the iPad 3.

We all know Apple wanted to get the iPad 3 out on schedule. But the A6X chip wasn't ready.

Lesson learned.

Move on.

Not all Apple customers are created equal

I am an ipad 3 ("new ipad") owner ...
Only people who bought the 3 a month before the announcement got shafted, maybe (and I think if you bought it within 2 weeks you could return it). ...

My husband bought the iPad 3 for me 13 days before the launch of the iPad 4. Neither the shop where it was bought (an official Apple reseller) nor the Apple Store in Barcelona would honour the promise made by Apple to exchange iPad 3s for 4s if bought in the previous month. The shop would not accept a return either.

I felt aggrieved then and thoroughly pissed off now.

I like my iPad 3 but I am angry that, in Apple's eyes, non-US customers are inferior in most respects to those of you across the pond.

Really?

I bought iPad3 just 10 days before the launch of iPad 4. The next day I downloaded a return form and shipped my iPad3 back to Apple. And ordered iPad4 for the thanksgiving weekend.

I'm not sure about apple customer service outside of US, but it's really good in here.

Well she just told you about Apple customer service outside of the US - so now you know...:/

Was the iPad bought in one country and you were trying to exchange it in another? TBH, I am quite surprised that Apple would not honour the exchange. If I were in your shoes, I would have emailed Apple directly with proof of purchase and pursued the matter.

No. The iPad was bought in Spain. I tried to effect a return/swap in both the city in which it was bought (Vic) and the Official big Apple Store in Barcelona (Plaça Catalunya). No joy. Friendly smiles, apologies but "no can do" was all I got.

I was further told that each Apple outlet is a world of its own and cannot deal with purchases made from another. Even when you buy from the Apple Online store, an official physical Apple Store cannot accept returns or exchanges, only repairs. The excuse was that it would have caused a "stocking anomaly".

What purpose, I wonder, does the serial number / unit ID serve, then - Apple can track your device anywhere, so why not in these circumstances?

The Official Reseller said that Apple gives them neither notification about nor authorisation to avail themselves of any official return policy such as the one widely reported following the iPad 4 launch. If I had really insisted on returning the device, they would have had to put it back on the market as secondhand, allowing me to have a 4 at their personal discretion and assuming the loss, since we are loyal and frequent customers (I didn't have the gall).

The irony is that that particular device had a problem with battery life and discolouration of the screen, so the Plaça Catalunya Apple Store DID accept it for an exchange - for a new iPad 3!
