Borders do matter. Dark borders cause deficiencies in black level to be more obvious, while white borders accentuate deficiencies in brightness. In the below image, the gray/black square in the middle of each border is the exact same color.

The same goes vice versa. But when the display is off you have true blacks but the white of most internet pages won't ever match the white of the bezel.

And it's an optical illusion that only works well with a small area surrounded by a bigger margin. Which is not true for the iPad.

Obviously it's an exaggeration, but the principle holds true. I'm not saying it's going to be a startling difference, but to say that there isn't one is equally false.

i am getting a white one because i have a white macbook. i was getting the white iphone but they didn't have it. damn you, Apple :apple:

Made my decision finally

I am DEFINITELY getting the 64 GB White iPad with the (RED) Leather smart cover. It is going to be gorgeous. I am becoming a makeup artist so I think the white will be unique and I will put it to great use with my portfolio photos. I am also getting a Booqpad in White-Berry...gorgeous and awesome for note taking and doodling!!

I was leaning towards white until I read this and compared the images from the enlarged images section on the smart cover site. The two I compared are the picture of it propped up in landscape for black and white. If you click on the two, it almost appears that the white shrinks... some sort of optical illusion.

I completely agree. I am teaching my sons to like what they like and ignore anyone that judges them. My younger son loves flowers and butterflies and trucks and pink and blue and gi joe and dolls. :D

I say, everyone: just buy whatever color YOU LIKE, and don't worry about what people will say or think.

I say, Right On!

con: it's white. eww.

pro: it's white. people who like the white one won't be buying a black one which translates to more black ones available on launch day. :)

Best Buy added White iPad to their Site

Despite all that has been said, and the legitimate points on both sides (minus the whole feminine thing... because that is stupid lol)

I am now really considering buying the WHITE IPAD :)

Originally I wanted the white ipad. For no reason other than I liked it. The nostalgia is great and all but I've SWITCHED to black now.

My reasons for white:
-It's specific to the iPad2 so it looks newer
-It looks cheerier

My reasons for black:
-more recognizable as an actual ipad
-gloss looks better on black (IMO)
-as someone else pointed out, it blends with the screen better giving a more magical aura of a black slab of glass that magically turns into whatever you're using it for.(like those house of the future things)
-black will stand out less in an office.
-the entire iOS interface is designed with black elements that I think match the black border better.
-The colors on the device will be a silver back and black buttons/logo no matter what, so a black front matches better.
plus seeing interesting apps like this: http://itunes.apple.com/app/starss/id367300362?mt=8
they always look better with a black border

now the decision just comes down to black or tan smart cover

All good points. I actually have changed my mind and currently, at this moment in time, have kind of decided that I might get the black iPad instead of the white one.

Personally, I would go with the black cover. Tan is not my favorite but, if you like it, go for it.

EDIT: Or maybe white.....?

Haven't read all 7 pages of this so it might have been asked before. Does the white iPad still have a black apple logo and text on the back?

Will be great to see both. Just one extra thought . . . remember the warm-screen, cool-screen discussion from earlier? I would think a white bezel would really make the difference apparent/annoying.
