No two ways about it: perceived contrast will be lower with a white bezel. Given the way i use my iPad (see my signature) i wouldn't touch a white bezel model.

Ebooks and videos will look noticeably worse. It is a simple matter of optical physics.

People (like me) used to skin their white Kindle's with a dark skin to improve the perceived contrast. Now notice what color amazon makes the latest models...

Ebooks? Are you kidding? You do realise that the inherent contrast ratio of the iPad screen is too much for extended reading, not too little? If bezel colour actually had a significant effect on contrast, which it doesn't, you would actually benefit from the decreased contrast. A white bezel will not wash out your images or distract you unless you have a serious case of ADD, it will simply not over-emphasize colours. The effect is basically the same as comparing two white or two black papers – look at them separately, they're both white (or black), put them next to each other and there are subtle differences.

I have to agree with you here. These seem to be legitimate concerns with a white bezel. Is a bright white a bit harder on the eyes? especially at night?

How would a white bezel be hard on your eyes at night? It's the screen that lights up, not the bezel. Of course, if you point a huge light at the bezel it might become really bright but I think the problem in that scenario is the huge light, not the bezel :)

I think people are really exaggerating this. We are talking about nearly imperceptible nuances here. At normal viewing conditions, the screen is always going to be brighter than the bezel. I've had a white macbook for 4 years and I have not yet lost my sight or my ability to concentrate. I also have a TV with a white bezel and none of my guests have complained about its lack of colour or contrast.

In the photography world many will tell you viewing photos against black area will bring out richer colors. You eyes can be fooled when viewing against a lighter area. White will tend to wash out the image and not give an exact color match. This might not be a factor with the White Ipad. I plan on getting white (I am a 40 year old male) and my wife is planning on the black. I have always liked the clean apple white products. Plus used to have a black and thought a switch might be good till Sept when the even newer one comes out

While I agree for the most part about the eye perceiving an image set against a black background as having richer colors the term richer could be misleading to some. My feeling is that a dark background tends to oversaturate colors. If you want accurate colors the ideal background would be a neutral gray. Putting all this Mr. Wizard stuff aside I doubt that many of us would ever be performing color critical work on an iPad, at least not to the point where white bezel / black bezel makes a real difference.

I'm still undecided myself, but leaning towards white (47 year old male, served in USMC). We had a saying about black vs white in the Corps. "There is no black or white, just dark green Marines and light green Marines).

Black:
- Will always look sleek / amazing
- Attracts Gloss equally, but is more noticable
- Resale value 1 year later will sell faster

White:
- Unique, a less popular color
- Childish / Feminine in a sense
- Attracts Gloss equally, but is less noticable
- Resale value 1 year later will sell SLOWER*

*An old persons hair does not turn darker as he/she ages.
Nothing is worse than having a 1 year old white iPad.

Posts like these terrify me. A color is childish/feminine?!!? And that's a bad thing??? I hope someday you're secure enough to get the color bezel that you like best.

I am a woman. I prefer black because black will always provide more contrast (or perhaps more perceived contrast) My plasma bezel is black.
If I upgrade my ipad to a second generation one, it will certainly also be black for the same reason.

I've loved glossy white ever since the original iPod, therefore I will be purchasing white.

Contrast, perceived or otherwise, is relative to the subject being viewed. If the image is lighter then it would stand out more on a black background, if the image is darker it would stand out more on a white background. In most cases though the contrast will be largely irrelevant. Reading text, as in an e-book is a good example. Print out two copies of a page of black text on white paper. Place one piece of paper on a larger piece of white paper the other on a black piece of cardboard (desk plotter, whatever as long as its black). Is one any easier to read than the other? The relevant contrast is between the ink and the paper its printed on (or the black text on a white screen) not between the screen and the background its viewed against.

There is no way that the color of the bezel is going to effect how the colors of the screen look. The actual display is the same exact one as on the black model, so I really don't think it is going to make a difference. I personally am going to get the white model because I just like the way it looks. Buy whichever one YOU like best. :)

So are all the millions of white iPods in the world suddenly disgusting to peoples eyes because ... they're white? Would people hate on white earbuds if Apple started to sell black ones? I remember some luddite back in 02' who never saw an iPod contemplating mine in amazment, exclaiming it looked like something out of Star Trek - not that I looked like a big girls blowse using it.

Man Up and go White with the Pink Case :p

**** yeah! :D

I have a white MacBook (late 2009) and the sleeve i have is in a light red colour. People sometimes look at me in a strange way because most of my clothes are black, i have long hair, tattoos and listen to heavy metal. :)

I think i'll get the white iPad. I have a thing for white and it will keep me form not seeing it on the couch, sitting down on it and break the screen. I overlook my black cat way too often (should have got it in white, i guess :D )

I want black, my gf wants white, can't afford to buy two, so white it is... I have settled for an orange smart cover instead of the pink that she wanted. I don't think the bezel will have a dramatic impact on the screen, as others have mentioned. It is simply aesthetics.

Borders do matter. Dark borders cause deficiencies in black level to be more obvious, while white borders accentuate deficiencies in brightness. In the below image, the gray/black square in the middle of each border is the exact same color.

It wouldn't be inaccurate to assume that I couldn't exactly not say that it is or isn't almost partially incorrect that I'm getting the white iPad. On the contrary. I'm possibly more or less not definitely rejecting the idea that in no way with any amount of uncertainty that I undeniably do or do not know that I'll be getting the black one.

Yeah, I'm the opposite.

Bravo. Your logic runs circles around anything else in this thread.

Seems that the Leather Smart Covers inside (Micro-cloth) matches the color of the outside, while the Plastic ones have a grey micro-cloth inside :)

I don't know why y'all are assigning white to women, I'm a woman and I want no part of the white one. I think it's uglier than sin, distracting when you look at the screen and I wouldn't even take one if you gave it to me

Really. I'm not too sure about that.

In my opinion white looks cheap, KIRFish even. I'll go with black. I never liked white iProducts. I have a Colorware magic mouse in black. Looks slick. Hated my old white iMac, but it worked. Apple needs to move to pure black and brushed aluminum.

Touche!

Historically pink as a "girly" colour is a fairly new developement – as in last century. For a long time it was considered a very manly colour. I wasn't even aware that the gender segregators had reached purple… Although, where I live, the only colours available on male clothing are: black, grey, army green and denim. If that's not paranoid insecurity I don't know what is!

I completely agree. I am teaching my sons to like what they like and ignore anyone that judges them. My younger son loves flowers and butterflies and trucks and pink and blue and gi joe and dolls. :D

I say, everyone: just buy whatever color YOU LIKE, and don't worry about what people will say or think.
