I could take or leave the camera but that's like saying why even have an iPod when your iPhone/iPad/Macbook can all play music portably or vise versa.
2 things:
1) The person who thought they would be able to sell these on a major website like eBay is an idiot. Apple monitors for this kind of thing 24/7. So you know it was only going to last for a few minutes anyways.
2) Why can't anyone take decent photos any more!? Anytime something like this occurs the report is always accompanied by blurry/crappy photos. Blurry photos screams "fake!" and always imply you are trying to hide something. Clear and sharp photos will add legitimacy every time.

why put a camera in what is clearly a "gaming" device?

Also I hope the next iPod touch has a camera. That and the small storage capacity are the only things holding me back from getting one.

so many more people would buy a iphone if there wasnt a ipod touch to begin with. then when they put in a speaker that made it worse. the more you give to the ipod the more reason not to get a iphone. not to mention they would also have to put in a mic. thats basically a iphone. then you can get a damn voip app a blam.

I'd support that, but evidently Apple wants to keep the iPod Touch thinner than the iPhone. That's allegedly what prevented the autofocus camera from being included in the current generation of iPod Touches. Larger battery would be nice too.
But for the moment, it's fairly easy to tell the difference between the two visually, and I expect that's the way Apple wants it.
iPod Touch total cost of ownership, forever: $299 + a few $10 software upgrades.
iPhone average plan total costs, 24 months: $2,839.
I don't think Apple has to worry about iPod touches cannibalizing iPhones. Are there some people who would buy an iPhone if the touch did not exist? Sure. But the cost for the iPhone is so much greater, that if the touch did not exist, most would not jump for the iPhone.
... the DA in two cities are looking at filing charges - Maybe too many episodes of LA Law or some other melodramatic drivel, but surely a DA decides if a case has sufficient evidece to go to court and maybe even assign a prosecuting attorney. I don't think LOOKING at filing charges is in their remit, that would be a police matter.

you didnt quote everything. the ipods grew and iphones shrank (in ratio) when it got a speaker. the same will happen with a mic +camera.

I am going to get a 64 gig Touch to go with the 16gig 2G I presently have. But if there is going to be a new model I am going to wait. Instead of the metal back cover the present Touch has I would love it to have the ceramic one the iPhone 4G is apparently going to have. I also like the metal buttons the iPhone 4G has. I wonder if the Touch is going to follow the iPhone 4G with such a case.

Yes, Apple decided to leak the third generation iPod touch eight months after it came out.
People need to stop throwing around "controlled leak," especially when they don't fully understand what it is.

I'd probably upgrade my current gen 32 for the next gen model. I love the new form factor Apple is coming up with, and I would love a camera on the Touch.
