I don't understand why everyone is saying this is so similar to the iPad. The iPad has an aluminium unibody back. And it has a small curve. This iPhone has a flat back and it's made of glass/ (or plastic)? The only similiraty is that this unit has an aluminium frame?? But the frame is not similar at all??

The proof is in the pudding

Reasons why this version of the iphone is newer than the one that was published in Gizmodo:

1. The Screws have now been removed from the bottom of the case and can now be found when you remove the sim card tray. There are a few reasons for this. The main reason is so that the phone looks more like it's big brother...the Ipad. The other reasons have to do with aesthetics as well. One of the reasons that Apple is trying to hide the screws and make the pin connector more hidden (hard to explain...hidden is not the right word) than the previous models is because of dust/lint. Because people put their phones in their pocket, quite a bit of dust/lint gets stuck in the nook and crannies of the phone. Thus Apple is trying to find ways to hide the screws which is evident with this version and the new Ipad. With the new Ipad, the pin connector is slightly narrower and a little more hidden (hard to explain...hidden is not the right word). This can also be seen in this version of the iphone.

2. Another reason this is a newer version is because of the presence of the 16 GB stamp on the back of the phone. The Gizmodo phone, only had the XXGB stamp.

3. Also, not many people probably noticed this one, but Apple has added a small metallic ring to the rim of the camera. This ring is actually behind the glass, unlike the current 3GS. The reason for this was because Jonathan Ive thought the previous prototype looked a little off balance with the shiny flash, and aluminum sides. What's important is that the ring is internal now...so it's real easy to wipe dust off unlike the current model.

Also, several people keep asking why you can't restore this phone to firmware 4.0. They will be able to once the firmware is released to support the hardware. Essentially, it could be done right now, but you would have to rewrite quite a bit of code.

Sigh!

Apple news is all iPhone/iPad 24/7.

Clearly its the same phone from the Giz leak, and lots of other leaks now.

Clearly they are going to use the iPad CPU because they own it and its much faster if you have used a iPad than the 3GS. They have to since the latest Android phones, you know the ones that out sold the iPone last month, all have a 1ghz snap dragon.

Clearly the resolution must increase, again compared to all of the new Android phones.

Clearly it will have a better Camera, and probably a front facing one, again to compete with the better hardware.

Etc...etc....etc.

Not much Mac news these days, like you know 10.7 or the next iWork, iLife or MobileMe improvements???

Apple is becoming a mobile gadget company. Their financial results show they made more money off the iPod/iPhone/iTunes echo system than computer sales did. The gap will only increase with the iPad being reported next quarter.

Hey Apple.......Windows 7, Office 2010, FREE Live Essentials wave 4 with Active Sync hotmail that has no storage limit, Photo gallery that has all of the same features of as iPhoto 09, including geo-tagging and the speedy 25gig SkyDrive (compared to iDisk) are worth answering.....if you care about the Mac any more.

I know this is bad news to you but it is good news to me.

I have never wanted a mac computer, the only Apple products I have ever owned is an iPod and a iPhone. As Apple focuses more and more on its mobile products they are providing me a much better product with the focus.

On a side note, I am happy to see the A4 in this thing. The iPad seems very speedy & smooth, so this power in an iPhone will be very welcome. I don't think Apple would have pushed the A4 to the iPhone so fast if the android phones didn't all have a 1ghz processor already.

dude... you complain about iphone-only news... then demand... iLife news? SERIOUSLY?

iwork, ilife, and mobileme can all take a jump in the lake for all i care, compared to the new iphone.

"ooh! ooh! the new PAGES app was LEAKED! how EXCITING! look at the TABS!"

yeesh.

and speaking of... it is weird that the new one looks all fat. and then they put it next to the old one and... it isn't. at all.

so i guess that curved back really did manage to hide the thickness of the 3g.

an iphone that works like an ipad. sign me the hell up. :D

"iwork, ilife, and mobileme can all take a jump in the lake for all i care, compared to the new iphone" Exactly my point. Apple = Mobile devices....forgot about the rest???

Yeah like when will there be an new iWork? Will it be 64bit and be faster? Will it use grand central for better performance? Will it allow me to default my saved documents to office formats? Can those office formats be the 2007/2010 formats? How compatible are they?

Those are just my iWork questions. I like the iWork product but some limitations stop me from leaving MS Office.

Or we could just rename the site, www.iphoneipadnossiumrumors.com ??

My guess is they didn't make an 8GB 3gS, so why would they make a 16GB 4g.
Calling this one a fake. I feel Apple will come out with a 32GB and 64GB 4g iPhone

Because they still need a lower priced model since there won't be a 64GB 4G.

Its not bad news, I just want to know. My Macbook Unibody and Macmini run Windows 7 like a champ. However so will hardware that cost a 1/3 less. I love Mac hardware but loved it more when OS X was way ahead of XP/Vista. That gap is closed and Apple is doing NOTHING about it.

I could easily be a iPhone/iPad only user or HTC Incredible/iPad user only.

I, for one, was definitely hoping for a 64GB version. The introduction of 32GB and 64GB models would be in line with iPhone's past releases. It is possible though that SJ is counting on new features selling the iPhone HD by itself, and so staying with the current memory configurations will actually be saving Apple some $$.

Gawd, I hope these images are real. RIP cheezy chrome bezel. Now if I can just get my 3gs to hold together until I'm due for the upgrade again. (My lightly used white 3GS has a crack on the dock connector working it's way up, and the chrome bezel is separating in a few different spots--I ordered it when it first came out, never dropped it or banged it.)

Much better grip and no more cracks around the button & dock holes. I like it!

I think we will see the 3G and 3GS become discontinued. And the new iPhone will come as follows:

16GB- $99
32GB- $199
64GB- $299

I am too, but it very well not be in SJs control. If only one chip can fit, and the largest single chip produced at the time of release is 32GB....this is all he can give us.

People, you need to look at current technology and stop assuming a doubling of memory will just come out of vapor somewhere.

The ONLY possibility I can come up with is Samsung's new 20nm process sizes down the chips enough so that they can fit 2 chips in....but that's really streching. It probably won't cut the size in half.

And what do you need 64GB in a cellphone for? All of my compressed music-archive is not even that big. And TV-shows or movies on a 3,5"-screen? Eww.

Some people have more than 32GB. This question never ceases to amaze me.

But he could have been asking if it was both 64 bit, and a faster processor. Not if its 64 bit, thus faster.:)

He's talking about iWork, not a piece of hardware. He's assuming that a 64bit version of iWork will be faster. It won't. It will only be able to address more than 4GB of memory. But if iWork needs anywhere near that amount, it's CRAZY memory hungry and I wouldn't want it on my system anyway!

...with pictures of bar stools on them

...and Beer-proof.:)

On a side note, sorry if anyone pointed this before but:

If it is the same A4 processor, and a production model (as many here say), then Why doesn't it have the big "A4" printed on it?

...just asking...

My bet is, as much as they can while still having the De-facto industry-standard formats (ppt, xls and doc) being proprietary.

I'm glad I'm less Office-dependent than you, and I don't need those "advanced features" that every Office power-user needs so badly.
