Good that they didn't release it with the dual dock, it looks like crap. Glad Steve was there to exercise judgement. Sadly he is no longer with us and I wonder who ll exercise good judgement for apple these days, because neither lion nor the apple tv ui show there's someone there capable of doing so. :(

And yet he was still there when both were created. Guess it was his bad day

I know having a landscape dock would make for nice movie viewing, but the iPad is made to be held... "internet in your hands" remember.

Hold your iPad in portrait and you see where your hand goes? Right where the second dock connector would have been. It spoils the smooth line and feel.

I notice that this item has 1272 unique reviews on ebay. I could see how some freak apple fanperson would pay five grand for this if it were a one-of-a-kind but since at least 1272 other folk have this thing, one would have to be insane to pay the asking price.

I hope you are kidding! What you said was with tongue firmly in cheek, right? You do realize the reviews are for the iPad 1 not for this particular prototype, right??

Yes

Yes, I realize that the reviews are not for the prototype.

I WAS a bit surprised that this sort of thing (using reviews of one item to sell another) passes on eBay. When it's time to sell my Dodge truck I'll will put Nissan Frontier reviews on it.

Cool little piece of Apple history. I've always wanted to dock my iPad sideways. If only I had a ton of cash to spare!

Does make me laugh seeing people posting "I'm glad they did not keep the second connector"

I'm sure we can all imagine if there were 2 connectors how these exact same peope would be posting now, saying they were glad there are two connectors.

It's so funny and stereotypical :D

Prototype Original iPad with Single Dock Connector Surfaces

"I'm glad they did not keep the single connector" :D

:apple:Can't wait for Tim "Commu-apple-" Cookster to send police to get this down. Only Apple would do this, in fear of losing potential buyers of their current devices. Not Samsung, not Asus, no one would do this but the Communist-Manifesto Freaks known as Apple. Sorry this is just a vent, angers me how this collective group of abusers can get away with this :confused:

Do you know what "communist" means? I really doubt it.

It would be great for those who use their iPads as a PC. You could attach a keyboard to the bottom that way and make an iPad laptop (which I think should be called "iBook" (yes I know that was the pre-Intel Mac laptops)).

Now you would think someone smart enough to get their hands on this and know to list it on a holiday weekend would be smart enough to do a proper eBay listing with properly scaled , sized AND in-focus pictures.
But alas...
What an Idiot!

Nevermind Two Connectors

The one is bad enough. I find that plugging the iPad in the charger is not as smooth as it could be. It always takes just a little bit more fumbling than it should.

And, of course, it is DEFINITELY not as smooth as Steve would have wanted it to be.

Why do we need a connector at all? The unit should just suck up available, light, friction from all the touching and swiping, ambient heat, and all the handling, moving around and shaking that the gamers inflict on it and convert it into electricity to power itself.

That's not totally true. Steve's original idea was web apps using html5 etc. he didn't want the whole sdk etc stuff. But Steve's best idea was to let others convince him something was a better way to go. And they did

Thank god Scott or whoever convinced him. But just goes to show not all great ideas originated frm Steve's brain. ;)

You are kidding right? The iPad was Steves baby and he put it on hold for the iPhone, it was the culmination of his work at apple and you think he didn't have the final say and choice over its design. I bet you anything you want, because Steve appreciated aesthetics that a few years ago in some office at apple he said, it's practical the dual dock but it looks like ****, kill it.
no I'm not kidding. But then again I'm not one who thinks Steve was the only one at Apple with brains, ideas and taste. Or that he didn't approve some not so great stuff too - like the hockey puck mouse, fat Nano, skeuomorphic design language in the software UI to name a few.

Just placed a bid :D

nooooooooo... I have been outbid!!! I'll give it 1 more try haha

 K... I'm not losing this auction.

Apple should have released the iPad with four dock connectors ;)

Nah just one connector that rotates when you rotate the screen :D.

Pretty cool find, I always did think it would be better with two ... but then again I think it would still be pretty useless with two, so I'm not quite the audience for this.

As for the Steve Jobs-discussion, I think his influence needs to be put into the right perspective.

First of all, the hand of Jobs is very clear when it comes to the iPhone and iPad. His sense of elegance, simplicity and design is clearly reflected in the products itself. Those product would not have been the devices they are right now it weren't for Steve.

However, Apple is a big company and there are more people than Steve. He set Apple up to be a company striving for the best, the simplest and the most beautiful, always. The success of the iPhone and iPad has proven how worthwhile it is to hold on to his philosophy. Steve biggest contribution to Apple is to plant that 'sense of elegance' into Apple's DNA and to prove that it works by sellling in big numbers.

The result is that everyone at Apple knows to some extend what Steve wanted and why he wanted that. Apple has evolved to the point where they can carry out the vision of Steve Jobs, despite the fact that he's not around anymore. Steve Jobs had a unique vision because he was one of the first to have that vision but nowadays his vision is much more common than it used to be.

Steve taught Apple what's best, now Apple's knows what best and they can continue to do what's best even without Steve.

Can't say I care about a second connector and I say this as someone who uses a keyboard with the iPad on occasion (mainly when traveling).

This thing basically solves the ONLY reason I would even consider the landscape dock:

The fact is, two connectors add more confusion than utility. People using keyboards with their iPads are already a minority.

The most likely reason for not including it was cost. The iPad came in a lot lower that every one was expecting. They most likely had a wish list that included twin dock connectors and a camera but price point removed both. In the end the Camera was added but most likely the second dock connector has been left as not really missed.

Funniest post of the week! Your impression of an overreacting teenager is spot-on! :D

I can't imagine why apple would even care about this being put up on eBay. But if they are really upset about it all they need to do is buy it. I'm sure they can outbid the other interested parties.

Yes you are kidding if you claim that Steve didn't have the final say, to me the fistt and final say on the first iPad design.

Nobody's perfect, and dtw skeumorphism in itself isn't a bad thing, the lines are very thin between what poor, good, and great design is. ICal and contacts on the mac are indeed **** in design, and that's a as close to matter of fact and not opinion as anything in design can get. You seem intelligent enough for me to not have to repeat once more why. Particularly so contacts, with iCal not being better but not so apparently bad. Those two amongst other things in lion and of course the new atv ui show a lack of judgement by someone at the very top, makes sense if someone at the very top is Forestahl or Creg fedreighi.

Kids here and apple cultists may downvote my posts as much as they want, but shooting the messenger doesnt amount to anything at the end of the day. iCal, contacts, and atv will still look like ****, are **** in usability, and ill suited to the particular device they are meant for (mac and atv) for pandering to an iOS rubbish skeomorphism.

The irony is that the cream of the crop of iPad apps use very sparse skeumorphism elements to none at all. It's highly ironic that a company who prides themselves on aesthetics should not only not be in the forefront of design in their own device the iPad, but should also borrow said (at best) passable iPad interfaces and force fit them in devices such as macs and the atv where they don't make sense, because it doesn't make sense to have a 12 by 7 cm contacts book on the mac, period.

People can say as much as they want about talent at apple, but these certainly don't show any talent at all. And I didn't switch way back when to have to switch back to ms products such as outlook say and think, hmmm, the way apple counterparts are they are not half bad.

I guess the brag factor would be cool for about a year. Wanna see what that will be like in 15 years? Ask anyone if they want to come over and see your Blueberry iMac prototype.
