I love when ten or fifteen people (my wife also had it happen to her because of holding the phone with her shoulder) point out an issue and claim that "all of the iPhones suck" and they will "return it ASAP til it's fixed" - me and around 100,000 other people or so made calls all day on the iPhone 4 and never had the sensor mess up once...
Maybe you all (my wife included) have funny shaped ears.....just a thought!
FYI if you hold it lose to your ear it shouldn't do it anymore....
When I got the phone I did not restore from backup. I just did a sync. I am picking up another iPhone tomorrow for the wife, I'll make a couple calls with her phone and I'll know pretty quick if it's a hardware issue.
I love it when 1 person points out they have no problems and then assume 100,000 other people don't have the problems. Even blaming it in funny shaped ears lol
Or when 5 people report an issue and assume everyone is - I have had this happen multiple times when using the 3GS and once with the 4 but everytime it was when I was using the phone on my shoulder (while writing or typing) - the sensor in the 4 is right above the ear speaker hole so if you watch how it slides (because of the glass backing) it goes up a bit above the ear, thus kicking off the sensor. Not sure if this is mainly due to design issues or just human error combined with the new slicker, glass back.
And if you couldn't see the ear shape thing was a joke I feel sorry for whoever you spend time with in real life =)
It is understandable that it would happen if you are using your shoulder, but I am holding my phone normally and the phone is rendered practically useless when making a call. I didn't see anyone on here claiming this this was an issue for everyone, just that it is an issue for us.
Anyone having a similar issue?
I'll be on a call with the phone against my face and it'll randomly dial numbers. It's as if though the proximity sensor thinks I've pulled the phone away from my face.

So we've all found this issue in the one day we've had our phones , but Apple didn't come across this in their testing?
Ugh.

As stated above, it seems that it is related to the restore from a backup feature.

Well ladies and gentlemen, my phone does it too.
But it's an iPhone 3G.
I think this is an iOS 4.0 issue.
