So we've all found this issue in the one day we've had our phones , but Apple didn't come across this in their testing?

Ugh.

Looks like they didn't find any of the problems.... I might just return my phone and wait for them to fix all of this.. and then maybe I will get it again. By that time.. maybe I should wait for next years phone and see what they have come up with that is 1st in history.

I love when ten or fifteen people (my wife also had it happen to her because of holding the phone with her shoulder) point out an issue and claim that "all of the iPhones suck" and they will "return it ASAP til it's fixed" - me and around 100,000 other people or so made calls all day on the iPhone 4 and never had the sensor mess up once...

Maybe you all (my wife included) have funny shaped ears.....just a thought!

FYI if you hold it lose to your ear it shouldn't do it anymore....

I am glad it works for you.. and I am glad that everyone in the world with the new iphone browses these forums and post about it.........

Its a real problem. Its not my ears being shaped funny. It happens on every phone call I have been in.. unless they were like 20 seconds long.

And yes.. I would/or will return it. Why would I keep a phone that I can't even talk on because it keeps going to mute.. dial pad.. face time... and everything else on there.

I love it when 1 person points out they have no problems and then assume 100,000 other people don't have the problems. Even blaming it in funny shaped ears lol

When I got the phone I did not restore from backup. I just did a sync. I am picking up another iPhone tomorrow for the wife, I'll make a couple calls with her phone and I'll know pretty quick if it's a hardware issue.

Let us know.

Or when 5 people report an issue and assume everyone is - I have had this happen multiple times when using the 3GS and once with the 4 but everytime it was when I was using the phone on my shoulder (while writing or typing) - the sensor in the 4 is right above the ear speaker hole so if you watch how it slides (because of the glass backing) it goes up a bit above the ear, thus kicking off the sensor. Not sure if this is mainly due to design issues or just human error combined with the new slicker, glass back.

And if you couldn't see the ear shape thing was a joke I feel sorry for whoever you spend time with in real life =)

It is understandable that it would happen if you are using your shoulder, but I am holding my phone normally and the phone is rendered practically useless when making a call. I didn't see anyone on here claiming this this was an issue for everyone, just that it is an issue for us.

That sucks then, definitely take it to the Apple store and if you show them it turning on during every call you make not using your shoulder they will replace it on the spot, the 4 should not be doing that and I have seen enough write-ups to know it's not common - 1st gen product could have a couple quirks but not something like that; get it replace ASAP and enjoy the phone that you deserve!

Give this is a try worked for me and others

Goto settings, general, reset and reset all settings

Good luck

Anyone have luck with the "Reset all settings" option? I want to say that it fixed it, but i'll have to see through out the day. First two calls of the day went without an issue.

Anyone having a similar issue?

I'll be on a call with the phone against my face and it'll randomly dial numbers. It's as if though the proximity sensor thinks I've pulled the phone away from my face.

I don't have this problem. However, with my 3GS after a 5 minute call or so I'd take the phone away from my ear to put it on speaker. The screen would still stay black and the majority of times I'd have to reboot.

Don't worry I knew you was joking about the ears, that's why I lol. :)

Same issue with my girlfriend's phone... I thought it was just the way she was holding it but I was wrong. Her phone is getting stuck on a black screen quite a bit and she is hanging up on people left and right.

Well ladies and gentlemen, my phone does it too.

But it's an iPhone 3G.

I think this is an iOS 4.0 issue.

As stated above, it seems that it is related to the restore from a backup feature.

It is not exclusive to a restore from backup. I set mine up as a new phone and just synced my data with it. No backup used. I had this issue last night and it was a real problem.

I saw two other people with my issue. Not really an "issue" but it did happen a few times. My sensor won't "turn on" my screen when I pull it away from my face. I will probably just do a fresh install of ios and go from there.

So I just had mine swapped at my Apple Store and I am still having this issue. I believe this is a combination of a design issue and the physical makeup of my ear. I am holding the phone as anyone would, it's just the way the sensor is aligned with my ear. This all may sound weird to some, but obviously this is an issue with many people. Unfortunately i don't think it can be fixed.

To clarify, I think this issue is different from the one some people are discussing here where they have a blank screen when moving it away from their face. I believe that issue is linked to iOS4.

I also think this is an iOS 4.0 issue. Today, i was using my 3gs and had similar problems as everyone here. I never had these problems prior to upgrading to iOS 4.0. Maybe they tweaked the software and made it a little too sensitive?
