I also think this is an iOS 4.0 issue. Today, i was using my 3gs and had similar problems as everyone here. I never had these problems prior to upgrading to iOS 4.0. Maybe they tweaked the software and made it a little too sensitive?

I think that is exactly right. It now seems like it registers even the slightest movement as being pulled away from your ear and turns the screen on. If this is indeed the case that is good news since they should be able to easily fix it with an update.

I think the post you were replying to is a different issue. Their issue was that it was "too sensitive", it wouldn't come out of the screen lock and would remain black. That is the issue people are having with 3g and 3gs on iOS4. The iPhone 4 issue is the opposite. Like you said, the screen turns on with the slightest movements. I think it can either be fixed by making the sensor MORE sensitive on the iPhone 4s or it could be a bigger issue with design since the sensor is higher up.

NO, my issue with the 3gs is that it was changing from iphone to bluetooth in the middle of a phone call. Also, hung up once on me. I believe these are similar issues to what individuals are claiming on the iPhone 4.

Ok thanks for the clarification Brownsfan

Well actually the fix would be to make it less sensitive, not more sensitive. The fact that slight movements make it turn on off means that it is obviously way too sensitive.

Same here

I got my phone yesterday.. I think there is a problem with the Proximity sensor. Since yesterday, Screen is turning on automatically while I am talking and doing weird things.. It is calling my old contacts .. and call is ending automatically , speaker phone is turning on .. placing Hold ... I tried to reset the setting still no luck .... Any one facing the same issue ????

Mine is definitely acting up. Was just on a call and kept hearing numbers being pressed then realized it was my phone doing it.

I then made a test call and stood in front of the mirror to watch the phone. Just shifting it up and down slightly, maybe 1/4", you know, normal movement maybe while walking around and talking, the screen would flicker on and off.

This never happened with any other iPhone and I have been using them in the same way from the start.

I'm having the same problem every call I've made I've ether dialled numbers put it on hold or on to speaker this is a major problem never had it with other iPhones in 2 and a half years. Hope this is a software fix or were all in for trouble!

After reading about all of the possible defects I've been trying to find yellow dots, replicate the fading signal, and every other problem that I've been reading about all day. I couldn't find any problems and was really happy that I fought throught the preorder chaos.

I didn't make any phone calls all morning at work. I go to make my first call on the way out of the office and hang up on my brother 3 times. FAIL!!!

*sigh*

I'm having the same issue. i was on the phone with AT&T tech support (about my internet) and I kept beeping numbers into his ear. I think it was equally frustrating to both of us! I never had this happen once with my 3G.

well after a restore....it is the same in fact the screen was frozen on me during a call and it was stuck on speaker....i wanna throw this across the room....

I'm pretty much having the same issue. When I would call someone it would within 30 seconds to a minute the person couldn't hear me. For the longest time I thought it was the network reception issues that everyone is having. But I realized that it was actually my face muting the call.

It's weird though, because it's not easy to replicate. I don't think the screen is coming on. Because I shifted my eyes and I didn't see a any glowing red blob. It also doesn't seem to do it when I test it, only when I'm normally talking on the phone will it happen. I'll see how it is a few weeks from now before I go to Apple.

this sucks

same issue...ear dialing.... it just seems like Apple is afraid to get it "right". So many steps forward on the new phone, then they fumble on something that never failed on the old one. Hopefully they fix this!

I'm sure it'll be adressed in the first update of the software. Apple always comes through.

Such is the joy of having a brand new device. When you are on the cutting edge of technology... it bleeds!:)

My i4 will go blank screen and I couldn't get it back on, somehow I got off the call... then it still wouldn't show my lock screen, then when it did, my slide to unlock didn't work for a minute or two... annoying.

This thing (which just happened recently for me) and the losing signals are the main problems I'm having at the moment.

I got my phone this mornign and almost during every call either the speaker phone turned on or called some old contact... never had this issue before... i hope this gets fixed soon... any case.. I am going to apple store tomorrow to figure this sh** out...

Made my first iPhone 4 call today and both of us had this issue. He muted me accidentally (or so he says) twice and I ended up typing numbers in with my ear twice and instigated speakerphone once.

Has anyone called Apple?

This is my biggest issue with this phone. I can't even stay on a call without either hanging-up or putting the caller on mute.

This is madness ! Don't they test this stuff !

I've made 6 phones calls this morning (for work) and I've had problems with 5 of them !

I never had any problems with the 3GS..

having the same issue, keep turning on my keypad and dialing while im on the phone

same here, this plus signal problems:(:(
I'm taking mine back today and I might just go and get an HTC desire
