Does anyone have the Starling HomeHub for Nest integration with HomeKit? I want to upgrade the HomeKit architecture but I want to make sure it is compatible with Starling first .

I don't get why a company with the resources of Apple can't figure out how to make these changes backwards compatible.
Because that's how you wind up with Microsoft Windows. For decades Apple has been the case study in why software companies should cut off backwards comparability much sooner than Microsoft has been willing to. If you want backwards compatability that lasts for decades, you need to buy different products.

All our home devices are on 16.4 yet it claims my wife is not.

I’ve triple checked everything and it’s all updated. Any clues how to resolve this? (It doesn’t inspire much confidence to upgrade…add to the fact I will no longer be able to manage my mother in laws home remotely until I update hers too).

Is it really worth this agro?

I think he's referring to the thread title, the recent debacle that was 16.2 -> pull back HK architecture -> 16.3.1 -> 16.3.2 -> 16.4 HK architecture option restored. Some people upgraded HK architecture under 16.2 and others didn't... then Apple left us all hanging for seven+ weeks until 16.4.

Meanwhile, people like me had broken HomeKit functionality between 16.2 and 16.4 ... seven weeks of daily router and Apple TV reboots to temporarily restore function. For now, everything is working properly again under 16.4.

Yes, updated to the new architecture with the initial release and no issues with my Starling Homehub with my Google Nest wireless doorbell cam. Response was faster after the update.

Thanks for confirming! I'll update ;)

Just upgraded. Everything is broken or ridiculously slow. Trying to find an undo button. Any suggestions?

The biggest issues are with the Hunter fans/lights I have.
Eager to hear if you find resolution. I have a Homekit Hunter fan and it’s one of the more unreliable (and frustrating) devices in my house. Making it worse is not appealing!

All this monkeying around in the two months between 16.2 and 16.4 has been hell.

When I was stuck in between at 16.3.x for the last seven weeks, I had to reboot my router and hub (Apple TV) daily. I had to make sure router was only rebooted while the Apple TV was powered down, and then power up Apple TV last. It was the only way I could get things to work, but only for about a day. 16.4 seems to have fixed this 16.3 debacle.

I'm just saying, maybe you really need to reset everything after the update in order to get it going again?

Interestingly I didn't get a prompt to update to the new Homekit yet, nor am I seeing this issue on my iPad that's still on 16.3.1.

Do I have to update my Apple TVs (since they can be home hubs) before it offers the opportunity to hopelessly break my system? :)

I cancelled it last time, and it never showed again (was on 16.4, now on 16.5 beta).

It shows in the Home app under (···) Home Settings / Software Update.

I'm not going to update otherwise my 6S will lose access.

You still have the option to take the new architecture; and it's not showing you an upgrade prompt because you declined once already.

I know; I guess I wasn't very clear! The option is there, but it didn't pop up automatically - i.e. I didn't get a prompt (again) to perform the update after rejecting it during the brief period it was available the first time.

I can run it any time by going into the menu and selecting it.

Seemed clear enough the first time.

I’m glad that Apple has released this again - I’ve been looking forward to upgrading my Apple home to the new HomeKit architecture since Apple first announced it

I always like to wait at least 2.5 weeks after a major iOS update is released to the public before I upgrade all of my iOS/iPadOS devices at the same time - that way if there’s any reported bugs, I can hold off on upgrading

I’m also going to read the reviews online to make sure that the second iteration of the HomeKit architecture upgrade is a smooth upgrade and that there aren’t any reported bugs in this version like there was the first time that Apple released the HomeKit architecture upgrade

I want to update but am very cautious for a couple reasons. First, I have two homes configured on HomeKit and one is always far away - hundred miles away - such that I can't just go there and reboot the Apple TV or HomePod Mini if I end up no longer "seeing" my devices. Second my AppleTV goes into "No response" all the time and I can't wake it up unless I'm physically there. This one has been an issue forever so I would not recommend using the AppleTV as a hub... Anyway if my HomePod goes haywire, I can't fall back on the AppleTV. These automatic and remote updates on AppleTV and Homepods are always nerve wracking...

OK, so update on my end. I decided to pull the trigger and go for the update. Initially, everything was a bit of a disaster as many accessories did not initially connect.

Like others, I have quite a complex set-up.
  • 7 cameras
  • 8 hubs (with HomeBridge)
  • 82 accessories
  • 3 HomePods
  • 3 AppleTV's
What I learnt was the HomePods need a little time to let them "Configure" themselves. I presume the same for the AppleTV hubs.

Once that is complete, (it takes a while as my stereo pair HomePods unpaired while configuring and once they "settled down", they paired up again.

However, even after that wait, many accessories refused to work. I found restarting my entire home WiFi network, and physically hard rebooting all 8 hubs got everything back in order. This included rebooting HomeBridge, the Netatmo hub, and the Hue bridge.

The only downside is since my wife is an "owner" of my mother-in-law's home, she can no longer view our own home until I update my mother-in-law's place....urghhhh

Thoughts so far....
  • Much, much snappier. Accessories respond much faster.
  • Siri responds much faster. I've not heard her ask for more time yet....."One sec.....I'm working on that....."
  • Automations appear to work (my heating turned off the instant it was meant to)
  • HomeBridge is not affected at all.
  • If the transition process were smoother, this would be a fantastic update.
  • I'm still concerned I cannot get my wife on our home again. I will upgrade the MIL's home this weekend and hope it resolves that last problem. Apple should have managed this better.
