You are correct about the initial Mac OS X release. The difference is that they warned everybody that it was not fully functional yet. For a mature OS, there's no excuse for this level of shoddiness.
I didn't mean Mac OS 10.0, I mean all the major subversions. Like 10.5.0, 10.6.0, etc. They're all "mature" but not really.

Apple Mail has been a Big Fail. Forever.

It has never been a strong corporate email solution. It is just wasted potential. There are several startups that offer a robust Mail database combined with a sleek UI and very useful features. Is Apple waiting for its stock to crash and burn before somebody wakes up and starts addressing the inherent OS problems?
I use it every day at work cause it's better than the Gmail web UI.

10.15 is therhe worst release of macOS in many years. Search in Mail.app Is just not working for me. Not even a tiny bit.
I was stunned that search did not work in Mail, too. Fortunately, a simple reboot of the computer fixed it for me.

Can all the people defending Apple like "it's ok to brick your system it's only beta" now wake up and see Apple has a software development problem that is getting worse and worse

I think Apple has a Sr. Management decision making problem. I suspect that the actual engineers, if given the time, would provide good software. But Cook does not understand software development, so he forces a date and then we get crappy software. Easy peasy to understand.

These problems with mail do not surprise me one bit. Apple is terrible with services and Apple mail is essentially a service, even if Apple does not host the mail server. But they do host a mail server and therefore I would bet that Apple mail probably works better with Apple servers.

It would be easy to see that the problem is that Apple has not got a clue how to correctly use public mail APIs and they screwed up some mapping between the Apple APIs and the public mail APIs while trying to make mail simple without the complexity and options that are really needed. This has been a trend at Apple lately.

Here is the thing about OS updates. Always wait at least 6 months until Apple work out all the bugs. Yes, I used to upgrade it at the second it was available but being burned out few times taught me a lesson.

So far these mail problems are Outlook related?

I think the problem with Outlook has been Microsoft’s boneheaded insistence of a proprietary email system. They have done everything they possibly can to clutter and junk up what should be a very simple file and directory structure to sent text files (aka email).

As a result Outlook is often problematic with upgrades, difficult to interface with, and full of stupid annoying quirks.
Even today, most Outlook users are stuck in last century POP style accounts, because Outlook + IMAP + large volume of email is a recipe for severe issues.

This blank message problem sounds a lot like long standing export/import Outlook account issues. Drag and drop from large volume Outlook accounts on Windows machines has the same problem with losing messages and creating emails with intact headers but blank message content. This was something that took thousands of dollars and about 2 month of headaches for our company to fix not two years ago with Outlook accounts on Windows machines.

Once we went with a Linux based mail server, mail has been solid aside from the usual growing pains of freeing and reacclimatizing Outlook captives. Might want to look into it, as what you are (over) paying for Outlook can be much better spent on a more universal and standards friendly solution.

thank you so much for your detailed explanation, it seems it is pure outlook-issue. So far I did not see any problem with my iCloud and Google accounts. I will wait and try it maybe 2’ 3 weeks later, any see whether Microsoft would fix it.

I'm giving Catalina a very w i d e and l o n g pass.
Durn poor rollout, Apple.

That, and dropping 32-bit support kills my old version of Office that otherwise serves my needs just fine. So upgrading means either pirating a new version or spending more money... and now with all these bugs, I think I'll stay with Mojave this round.

I don’t know wher to begin, but a lot of misinformation here. First, Outlook is an email client that works with Exchange, IMAP and POP servers. I’ve been using Outlook with our company’s Exchange server and personal IMAP email servers for years. Outlook is definitely not a POP centric email client. Outlook has its problems, and Apple and Microsoft have often had issues in the past. However, stop making excuses for Apple. They just aren’t great at software, and they are getting worse. I’ve worked developing software for the Mac for thirty years, and they never cease to amaze me at their incompetence in software development. That said, I’ve seen a steady decline in recent years for IOS and Mac OS/OSX.

Apple mail is a hobby project and I really can't understand how anyone using mail for anything important or professional would trust a mail system that hasn't been updated since 2005 at least. And the same goes for Icloud, the last useful updates were seen when Steve Jobs was still around.

So much contrived outrage lol. I’ve been rocking Catalina since the beta and it’s awesome. A vast majority of the “problems” stem from dropping antiquated 32 bit support. I deleted two games and moved on with my life lol. There are a couple of bugs from what I understand, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Yes it is. The correct statement is “MY search bar...”. This is what confuses me. Everyone with an issue tends to believe it’s widespread. Most little bugs are specific to an installation.
Just to throw that back at you. The correct statement is “I’ve been rocking Catalina since the beta and it’s awesome FOR ME.....”. This is what confuses me, Everyone without an issue tends to believe it’s like that for all. Not all little bugs are specific to an installation.

are you for real? Apple Mail combined with for example Smallcubed software's Mailsuite = extraordinary.
Icloud has gone from strenght to strenght (see: Photos for Mac, all productivity apps in the browser, etc...)

Tsai says he's unsure whether these issues are due to Mail bugs or to other factors such as problems on the Mac or with the mail server.

Well, since macOS is the one that was updated not the mail servers, it's kind of obvious who's fault this is, isn't it ?

What utter nonsense. It’s not a “mail system” it’s a simple email client and it has been updated with nearly every new major OS version. The entire problem in this article was caused because of an update that required migration.

10.15 is therhe worst release of macOS in many years. Search in Mail.app Is just not working for me. Not even a tiny bit.

But I wish it was the only issues I have. SMB is loosing connection to my Synology. AFP is not working. Finder crashing on startup. Eject
ing disk is working poorly. Found some minor bugs in Safari. Had a few carnel panics (first after at least 4-5 years)!!

iMac 5k late 2015

Until today the worst experience I had with 10.x.0 release was Leopard. So I gues after 10 years o so history repeast itself.

iOS13 is also not in the best shape....

Did you upgrade or perform a clean install?

I never do an in-place upgrade on any of my Macs or iOS devices and I never have an issue with anything.

Not surprised, given what a steaming pile of **** Catalina has been.

That said, I did mess around with it a bit way back when I first started buying Macs. Outlook was too bloated and buggy and I was looking for something better. I couldn't find anything any so I swore off email clients altogether.

Then at work, when we got an Office 365 subscription, I picked up Outlook again - was nice to have one full-featured program from which I could manage both my work and personal email accounts. The thing that keeps me tied in are the 'rules' - I spent an inordinate amount of time creating folders/rules to finally organize things once and for all..........lo and behold though, you can't import rules from Outlook for Windows to Outlook for Mac or Apple Mail near as I can tell.

So yeah, after spending so much time organizing things in *one* program and getting it to run *exactly* how I like, I'm not going to be bothered switching to a new program and having to go through that whole laborious process all over again - let alone on something that's half crippled like Apple Mail.

Side note...

If you want a really good, stable Mail-like email client, try Postbox (postbox-inc.com). It's a bit pricey (unfortunately they've just gone subscription-based) but it's one of the best simple email clients around. The learning curve is about 10 minutes and it's been pretty bulletproof in my experience. Launches and checks mail faster than any other mail program I've seen, and the search is pretty much instant - searches as fast as you can type.
