When I open Apple Maps on my iPhone, it can take 10 minutes for traffic to show up at all. The only way to speed it up is to turn off traffic and then turn it back on.
It still doesn’t compare to the vast coverage, features and reliability of google maps... I tried to give Apple maps another go a few months ago and it just doesn’t have all the features google does. I doubt it will ever be up to google’s standard :/This joke is still being used?
Apple maps is 1,000x better than it used to be. I don't find Google maps to be much better as a whole and actually prefer the look of Apple Maps to Google Maps.
I predict that bringing Google Maps and Waze to CarPlay in iOS 12 means that Apple has finally resigned itself to the idea that the writing is on the wall for Apple Maps. I think it's telling that there wasn't a single mention of Apple Maps in the WWDC keynote; but there sure was a lot of applause from the audience when they mentioned that Google Maps and Waze would be available in CarPlay. I mean, really, how many people would complain if Apple Maps went away in a two or three years? There will be a few vocal complainers who will go bananas over privacy concerns with Google, but if someone is so concerned about "being tracked", they should turn Location Services completely off on their devices.
If Apple can't do navigation better than the competition (which they can't, in my opinion), I agree with you -- it's time for them to move on and invest those resources into other things that they can do really well. That's not to say they can't or shouldn't use the technology behind Apple Maps for other things that they might be working on, but I think they need to get out of the consumer-facing mapping business.
I'm in the US and have used Apple Maps exclusively in many parts of the US over the past few years. Took a 2,000 mile road trip last year and it worked flawlessly the whole time. On one leg of our trip, a solid 8-hour drive, it gave us arrival estimate when we started out, then had to reroute us several times to avoid traffic, taking us all kinds of weird back roads throughout the night. And at the end of that drive? Within 30 minutes of that original estimate.
Maybe Google would've pulled off the same thing, but frankly I give them as little of my location data as I can get away with. Apple Maps is also better integrated into the OS than Google Maps, and it isn't infested with ads like Waze.
Outside the US, I know it's a different story and Google is way ahead on comprehensive data. With sporadic internet in Central America a couple years ago, I relied heavily on Google Maps' offline map caching ability.

Who are the 2 other than myself?
Okay, found 1 more further down in the replies, that left 1 more.
That explains why Siri could not take me to a place I needed to go to. I thought it was Siri being stupid.
Down. Figures right? Getting ready to leave for home after being away for 5 days. The one feature for Apple CarPlay that’s worth it, maps, and it’s down!
If Apple wasn’t so freaking stupid in not allowing Google Maps or Waze with Carplay I wouldn’t be nearly as annoyed!
Can not wait for the update that allows me to use google maps with car play. I used Apple map yesterday to get to a location and it specially routed me PAST the destination for 1 mile only to do a detour and come back. Just ridiculous
I’m near Seattle over in Tacoma and it’s not working for meStrange. All is normal here in Seattle. I think I’d rather take my chances with Apple knowing where I go on a daily basis as opposed to Google, so Apple Maps it is.
If you are attempting to navigate with Apple Maps right now, you may be unable to do so, as the service appears to be experiencing downtime.

"Directions Not Available," the app says, when attempting to search for or navigate to destinations. "Route information is not available at this moment."
The issue appears to be widespread, with many users reporting that Apple Maps is down across the United States, Canada, and other countries. The outage affects all platforms with Apple Maps, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and CarPlay.
iPhone, iPad, and Mac users can simply use an alternative such as Google Maps or Waze in the meantime, but CarPlay doesn't currently support third-party mapping apps, something that is changing with iOS 12.
Apple has yet to update its system status page to reflect any issues. We'll update this article if that changes or when the issues are resolved.
Update: Apple has now acknowledged and is "investigating" ongoing issues with Maps Search and Routing & Navigation, according to its system status page. Apple says "all users are affected."
