If you are attempting to navigate with Apple Maps right now, you may be unable to do so, as the service appears to be experiencing downtime.

"Directions Not Available," the app says, when attempting to search for or navigate to destinations. "Route information is not available at this moment."

The issue appears to be widespread, with many users reporting that Apple Maps is down across the United States, Canada, and other countries. The outage affects all platforms with Apple Maps, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and CarPlay.

iPhone, iPad, and Mac users can simply use an alternative such as Google Maps or Waze in the meantime, but CarPlay doesn't currently support third-party mapping apps, something that is changing with iOS 12.

Apple has yet to update its system status page to reflect any issues. We'll update this article if that changes or when the issues are resolved.

Update: Apple has now acknowledged and is "investigating" ongoing issues with Maps Search and Routing & Navigation, according to its system status page. Apple says "all users are affected."

Apple claims it's pivoting into a services company yet hasn't updated their system status page to reflect any issues. Maybe they are hoping it will fix itself without people noticing :D

The main problem with this is that Apple has always sucked at providing services. The services they do provide are incredibly confusing for as simple as they are...

I'm surprised Apple Maps doesn't fall back to an offline mode when the servers aren't available, like Google Maps does.

I can even put my phone into airplane mode and still get a basic route and turn by turn directions from Google Maps. Obviously there's no traffic data but it'll still get me where I'm going. How come Apple didn't implement this feature?

If this doesn't get fixed very soon I will definitely be one who is greatly inconvenienced.
I was just about to leave and it's still down..

Just install Google Maps and use that. If you're afraid of being tracked, just don't log in.

It's a good idea to have Google Maps on your phone anyway as a backup. I'm mainly a Google Maps user, but when it's having issues, Apple Maps is my backup. I kinda like them both, but Google seems to have better routing in heavy traffic.

This joke is still being used?

Apple maps is 1,000x better than it used to be. I don't find Google maps to be much better as a whole and actually prefer the look of Apple Maps to Google Maps.

I don't think it was a joke. I think it is a joke the Apple maps gave you the longest route everytime you search for directions.

I can't stand Google Maps UI and Waze is always so lagging but I guess I have no other option right now...

I was wondering what was happening. I’m like...I just traveled from Houston to McAllen, 6 hours...is my phone busted? Guess not.

Apple maps is down and very few people notice because few use it... and rightly so. It’s taken me on so many wrong turns and given me so many headaches that i finally deleted it. Google maps is not only more accurate, but the interface is more appealing to me and intuitive. Better colour schemes, better directions, better arrival estimates and transit. Better in every way.

Apple Maps works great for me. I much prefer it over google’s. Especially the ui.

I’ve had no need for google maps for at least 5 years, except for an occasional street view need, and has never let me down.

Some of us use CarPlay and actually like the way Apple Maps works for that purpose. It knows my appointments and tells me when I need to leave for them. This quickly becomes an indispensable service, just as Apple intended it to be, and not something to be replaced at the spur of the moment, when you have somewhere to be. The entire system crashing is a big PR problem for Apple because probably tens if not hundreds of millions are using it every day.

I have to agree with you, I'm using it daily and it also calculates shortcuts greatly which is something Waze was not good at..

Out of sheer laziness I'd been using Apple Maps on my old 5S. It barely works … won't keep up with my driving speed or just gets stuck at my starting point. When needing directions to a particular location last week, a friend said "Just search Google Maps". I didn't have Gmaps on my phone (note sheer laziness) so I quickly downloaded it. Wow. No comparison. Nearly flawless. Not sure I'll ever go back.

Down. Figures right? Getting ready to leave for home after being away for 5 days. The one feature for Apple CarPlay that’s worth it, maps, and it’s down!
Truth. Pretty much the only reason I use CarPlay. But Waze is on the way!

You do realize that more people use Apple Maps than Google Maps on iOS, right?

And yes, hit us in Sardinia. For what it’s worth, I use Apple/Google Maps at about 50/50 - they each have their advantages and disadvantages.

It was a joke. MacRumors members admittedly claim that Apple Maps is garbage and that no one uses it, which was the premise of the comment.

The amount of juvenile comments about Apple Maps is astounding in here. I use Apple Maps all the time in my area, and even though I do have Google maps as an alternative on my iPhone, I rarely ever use it at all for anything. Apple Maps has been excellent in providing terms of updates with construction, Updated infrastructure, blocked roads, alternative routes, etc. I commend Apple from where Apple Maps first started to where it is today. Complete 180.
“Juvenile comments”! The phrase I was looking for. Thanks!

Longest route, shortest time.

Announce Apple Maps is down, so MR folks go try it anyways, further hammering their server, compounding the issue.
And as of now, it’s still down. :)

Oops, a few seconds later and it’s now up.
